JANET JENNINGS: In Memoriam
Four poems by English soldier, poet, essayist and novelist Edward Thomas are set to music by Janet Jennings in ‘In Memoriam’, as seen in today’s Resound film from Wellington’s St Andrew’s On The Terrace. Janet writes, “The Trumpet, The Owl, The Gallows, and In Memoriam, are typical of his work in that they blend and shift between meditative recollections of the English countryside and his emerging belief that he must fight to save it - happiness lies just out of reach. Thomas was killed on Easter Monday, 1917.”
‘In Memoriam’ is sung by tenor Jared Holt with the New Zealand String Quartet (Helene Pohl, violin; Monique Lapins, violin; Gillian Ansell, viola; Rolf Gjelsten, cello).
Audio recorded by our Resound partner RNZ Concert.
Resound is funded by NZ On Air.

Is secular religion a contradiction in terms?
The idea that secularity is the scourge of religion drives high-volume book sales by militant and not-so-militant atheists such as Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins and Alain de Boton.
However Christian commentators on secularity such as Charles Taylor, Gianni Vattimo and Lloyd Geering have a more insightful and suggestive tale to tell, and Buddhists such as Stephen Batchelor and Winton Higgins are attempting to align the Buddha's teaching with the intensifying secularity in today's western culture and thought.
Are current accounts of Buddhist and Christian secularity pointing to the seeds of secularity as having been planted in these traditions, and can this give a new lease of life to both religions in late modern conditions?
Winton Higgins and Lloyd Geering discussed ideas such as this, and more, on 15 February 2013 at St Andrew's on The Terrace, in Wellington, New Zealand, and their discussion can be found in this recording.
Lloyd Geering is Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies at Victoria University of Wellington and a minister emeritus of the Presbyterian Church.
Winton Higgins is a social science academic and writer who lives in Sydney. A secular Buddhist teacher, he fosters interest in the original teachings of the Buddha and their affinity with modern streams of thought and progressive social commitments.
MICHAEL VINTEN: Song Without Words (Canzona senza parole)
Michael Vinten's 'Song Without Words' grew out of a friendship that developed between the composer and flautist Luca Manghi when the two were tutors at the Whanganui Opera School. The song of a tui that was prominent during one of the Opera Schools made its way into a work Vinten describes as an encore piece. Luca Manghi is joined by pianist Kirsten Robertson in this Resound film, the first in our series of films from the New Zealand Music for Woodwind 2017 from Wellington's St Andrew's on The Terrace.
Film funded by NZ On Air.
Performed by Luca Manghi (flute) and Kirsten Robertson (piano) at New Zealand Music for Woodwind 2017, St Andrew's On The Terrace, Wellington, 3 March 2017.
