A Visit to St Benets Abbey ~ Norfolk Broads Holiday Vlog pt2
You cannot visit the norfolk Broads without a trip to explore the ruins of St.Benets Abbey. In stark contrast to the rest of the surrounding area the abbey occupied a large area on the banks of the river Bure and in a time when the area of Norfolk and East Anglia was sparsely populated. The monks left in the 1500, the abbey was not closed by Henry VIII. The windmill was added to the gatehouse in 1720.
On our visit we study the graffiti carved into the stone, always interesting to find the earliest dates. We also show extreme courage when encountering a huge beast.

St Benet's Abbey - a Broadland icon.
Hi
Welcome to my latest vlog from one of the icons of the Norfolk Broads, St Benet's Abbey, near Ludham, Norfolk.
St Benet's is a small ruin from a much larger abbey complex which dates from around the 12 th century, according to sources it was the only abbey complex not closed down by Henry the eighth.
The abbey ruins sit beside the River Bure, part of the Norfolk Broads river network.
On this visit the conditions at St Benet's were gorgeous, it was a typical misty Broadland morning, one of my favourite types of weather for shooting Broadland.
I hope you enjoy this entry, not so many sound problems this time, just a slip of the finger to delete the first part of audio (again!!!!!).
If you have watched this latest entry or liked it or left any comments, thank you, and if you haven't yet subscribed to this channel, I'd be so pleased if you'd consider doing so.
All being well, there will be another entry next week though I'm not quite ready to commit to a regular slot yet.
take care
J

History & Haunting of ~St Benet's Abbey~ Norfolk Broads~England
St Benet's Abbey is nearly 1,000 years old !The Norfolk Archaeological Trust is the owner of the site
The Abbey of St Benet at Holme lies deep in the Broadland of East Norfolk, close to the meeting place of the rivers Bure and Ant. This was the only Norfolk monastery founded in the Anglo-Saxon period which continued in use throughout the Middle Ages
The ghost of a traitorous monk haunts St Benets Abbey, on the 25th May each year. Believed to be Essric the bailiff monk, who in the days following the Norman Conquest, betrayed his brethren to William the Conqueror’s soldiers by allowing them access to the Abbey. In return he made the soldiers promise that once they had taken over he would be made Abbot, true to their word, the Normans appointed him Abbot. However, the Normans had little time for traitors and as such Essric, dressed in full regalia, was nailed to the Abbey doors and skinned alive.
His fateful screams can still be heard on the night of 25th May and shortly afterwards the form of a monk can be seen writhing in agony from the former bell tower.
The spectre is more often seen in the late autumn or winter; a dark, foggy night being the most suitable time. Even to this day, few would care or dare to pass the old ruin after darkness had set in...........
Many years ago, on All Hallows Eve, a wherryman
lost his way in the fog and darkness. At last he
found himself opposite the old gateway, at the time
an extra special performance was going on, rooted
to the spot with horror to witness the awful closing
scene.
As soon as it was over, with a yell of terror he
rushed forward to reach his wherry which was
moored in the river close to the old Chequers Inn.
He fell into the water there and was drowned.
There was another apparition of good import, which
used to appear on the causeway leading form the
Abbey to the Hospital of St James. All that we can
learn of it was very shadowy and undefined. Some
think it had to do with the rescue of the young monk
Edwin and the holy Saint Benedict as recorded in
the Legend of the Seal.
An improved system of drainage and the high
cultivation of the land is supposed to have put an
end to the apparition but no system of drainage or
cultivation appear to have the slightest effect on the Shrieking Monk!

We have no reliable evidence to support any of this. However, a remote ‘island’ site like St Benet’s could have been perfect for an Anglo-Saxon hermit.READ MORE

the team travelled over to St Benets abbey ludham for the anniversary of the day the abbey fell to norman invaders. strange lights and many orbs were captured of which many could be discounted as insects whilst others were of interest due to colours and self illumination.
The abbey is itself under restoration to preserve this beautiful monument for future generations to come.

It was time to take the dog for a walk, so it was the perfect excuse for a little flight with the drone too. Managed to get the flight distance up to over 300 meters today but it would seem the new firmware update is much needed to correct a few things with the transmission between the controller and drone
