Porthmeor Programme 2015 | St Ives School Of Painting
more info :
A year long study programme including a 3 day intensive study week and 8 tutored weekends working towards a final celebratory exhibition.
We cater for a range of students from early stage artists to those with more experience. Discovering Practice is a one to two year programme to lead you though a wide spectrum of approaches and styles. Following on from this is our one year Developing Practice Programme led by artist Kerry Harding. This is ideal for those looking to challenge and stimulate their practice.
Are you open minded, motivated and excited about making work? Then joining one of our one year programmes could be just what you need. Our Porthmeor Programme is ideal for those looking for a longer-term structure to learning and a supportive group of peers. They are rooted in our ideals of creating a nurturing and safe space so you can take risks and gain the confidence you need to move your work to the next level. An artist tutor will be with you all the way, so they get to know you and your work.
Workshops run on weekends so students can travel from across the UK to join us. They combine a practical making element along with one to one tutorials and group discussions. Carefully selected visiting artists will join the lead tutor. Both programmes close with a celebratory group exhibition.

Another World (1948) | BFI National Archive
Take a tour through St Ives’ labyrinthine cobbled streets, with names like 'Love Lane', 'Fish St' or 'Teetotal St', and encounter an array of colourful characters along the way. From well-weathered fishermen to artists, including Leonard Fuller, who appears with a group of students in tow from his St. Ives School of Painting, to George Bradshaw who founded the St Ives' Society of Artists. And, as the narrator points out, there are cats everywhere - no doubt due to the endless scraps of fish at their disposal.

Codswallop in St Ives
Inspired by Diogenes the Cynic dragging a codfish through the streets of Athens in 303BC Ken Turner, performance artist and painter, decided to do the same in St. Ives, Cornwall. The message being to alert people to the inequalities and propaganda in life which one knows about, to include the notion of corruption of ideas in society, in art and education, social and economic institutions, schools and universities, As an artist, above all, is the corruption of consciousness: particularly in painting wherein the practice of modernism has developed into pastiche and mannerism in form, devoid of real meaning or sensibility or worse still into styles of kitsch. WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT today is that we as as a society are less inclined to value PLAY AND IMAGINATION AS a source of vitality in life.
The film is made by Huw Wahl
