Haunted Britain: St Mary's Church, Langenhoe, Essex, England.
Site of the church once famed within paranormal circles as, 'The Most Haunted Church In England'. With links to the even more famous Borley Rectory haunting through the Waldegrave family, this place has some dark and interesting tales to tell. If only its long ago greatness could be glimpsed today through a greater lens than which the murky veiled ponderings of yesteryear provide, and that we were left with more than just the stories and echoes of a place that once was.
But alas, all we have today are the stories handed down, as the church itself has long been demolished. Still, this is an atmospheric location and one that is worthy of a visit. And from its destruction we are left with one obvious question! Was the church really unsafe? Or was it too much bad publicity for an establishment already showing signs of falling numbers, to maintain a religious building with such an infamous reputation? It has been reported that one of the final demolition team stated that the building would have never fallen, insinuating that it didn't really need to be demolished. And it is fact that many other churches have been left to stand in ruinous state, many even being stabilised and made 'safe' to be open to the public.

St John's Church, Tuebrook video tour (new HD 2015)
Movie & stills tour of this magnificent Bodley church built between 1867 and 1870, its cost of £25,000 (£1.5m as of 2015) being totally met by the wife of Rev. J. C. Reade. The architect was George Frederick Bodley (1827-1907). The interior was redecorated in 1910 by Hare to Bodley's design. This was restored in 1968--71 by Stephen Dykes Bower. Pollard and Pevsner describe the interior as being glorious and richly coloured due to the resplendent display of Bodley fittings and the vibrant decoration. The citation in Images of England states it is one of the finest examples of Victorian polychromy.The walls and the roofs are all richly stencilled, and in addition there is a wall painting on the east wall of the nave by C. E. Kempe. The gilt reredos dates from 1871 and has panels painted by Kempe.
The area under the tower has made into the Chapel of the Holy Rood and contains a reredos, an altar and a credence table which were adapted in 1978 from a rood screen of 1890 by Bodley which was taken from Dunstable Priory. The pulpit and the octagonal font were both designed by Bodley, as were the richly painted screens (again with panels by Kempe). The stained glass in the east window and the south window in the chancel is by Morris & Co.; some of the windows elsewhere are by Burne-Jones. In the church is a brass memorial dating from 1926 by Hare which consists of a life-size figure of Fr Ralph Brockman, Vicar for almost thirty years. The memorial to the First World War is a statue of Mary, also by Hare; that to the Second World War is a statue of John the Baptist by Sir Ninian Comper.
The organ, built in 1867, is by the William Hill Company of London, and improved in 1895. Hill was one of the most celebrated of all British builders. In more recent times it has been restored by David Wells, but remains very largely the original instrument, being awarded an Historic Organ Certificate Gd 1. The ring consists of eight bells which were cast in 1869 by John Warner & Sons.
Since 1896, S.John's parish has had only six Vicars, the longest incumbency being that of Fr Frank Sampson who completed forty-eight years in post up to his death in 1994. Between 1901 and 1966 the church had but two organists in succession, with a brief three year period from the son of one of these men. From 1882-1886 William Faulkes, well known organ composer and recitalist, served as S.John's church organist.

Stockton Heath: Cheshire's New Ten!
I'm back! Nearly two years away... and something very special...
Cheshire (and the world) have a brand new ring of ten bells now ringable at Stockton Heath, just south of Warrington, weighing in at 16-3-6 and tuned to E. The back eight bells come from Bollington (also in Cheshire), cast in 1880, but the front two were cast in 2015 due to a very generous donation. The eight were refurbished and all ten tuned and hung by John Taylor and Co. of Loughborough and are now ringing out across the village (though quietly due to extensive sound control). All the locals are a brand new band, but they are well supported by nearby towers (Daresbury, Runcorn, Weaverham, Hartford and Grappenhall to name a few).
They go well, handle their weight, and there are plans to make them sound better in the ringing room as at the moment they are far too loud, especially when the striking isn't perfect.
The first part of the film was shot during the first open ringing ever on the bells, the Mid-Cheshire Branch of the Chester Diocesan Guild's AGM in December 2016, and features Plain Hunt on 9 and then Stedman Caters. The second part, in the belfry, was shot a week later at the Christmas Festival where I tied the seventh for silent demonstration to visitors, and could capture some unique footage of the bell being rung up from down whilst close but at a safe distance of course.
This may not be the start of many more videos, but some may begin to pop up now I'm in a new area of the country...
*TRIVIA* My brother's first job in his new role at Taylors was the clappers for this installation so any breakages can be blamed on him!

i-Go-2 top 500 year old Tower step by step by step
This church tower has around 130 steps from the grass to the Tower and on the way you pass the Ringers' Room and the Bell entrance and then finally the tower roof. The view from the roof is stunning. I have walked up there recently with various interested people, Michael from Strummer Pink, a French student and then Juliet, Simon, Iona and Ben visitors from Stroud. This tower was built some 400 years ago and is a very interesting part of this beautiful church. In a pamphlet found inside the church I found that the tower was built within a year or two of 1500 has been described as one of the glories of the West Country. It has 41 crocketted pinnacles based on Gothic design. The plinth of each pinnacle rests on a springer stone carv ed in the form of a devel or mythical animal. The two statues on the NW corner are the work of Harry Hems who carved the reredos of St Alban's Abbey. The lower figure is St bega, a Saxon saint, who gave her name to the town as Begamynster. The upper figure is King Alfred who was often in the district with his army. The tower hoses a peal of ten bells, and the present clock, dated 1739 plays the tune 'Hanover' every three hours during the day time.
