Bioluminescent Water in St Kilda, Melbourne - Spectacular Phosphoresence
It's on again, the most amazing colours you will ever see!
I was skipping my soft-plastic lure along the surface of the water towards the shore at St Kilda Pier and watch what happens...
Here is an explanation of last year's occurrence:
(from Lucky witnesses to a spectacular natural night-time show illuminating Port Phillip Bay can thank microscopic algae for the bright flashes and glowing clouds of blue.
While it may appear something out of science-fiction, the dazzling blue light is being created by the presence of noctiluca, a non-toxic form of bioluminescent dinoflagellate that lights up when agitated by night and causes a blooming 'red tide' by day.
Professor John Beardall of Monash University school of biological sciences said while blooms of noctiluca are occasionally observed in Port Phillip Bay, it was rare to see the levels that had created such a vivid light performance.
He said a combination of factors needs to come together including calm conditions, the right temperatures and a certain level of salinity.
There is usually a trigger for a bloom, you need the right sort of stable water column where they can aggregate, he said.
They are certainly spectacular when they get going.
While mystery still shrouds the science of bioluminescence, it is understood to play an important role in marine ecology.
Professor Beardall said the flashes of light appear to be a technique of self-preservation, momentarily startling any predators.
The light flash that occurs when a predator makes contact can also be triggered by waves or bodies moving through the water or across wet sand.
They are certainly beautiful to watch, I've seen them elsewhere but not in Port Phillip Bay, he said.
A range of factors including the weather and noctiluca feeding patterns will determine whether the show is over or the algae will remain to dazzle another night.
What usually happens is you get a change in the water and they just disperse, Professor Beardall said.
