The Church of Sarah Losh in Cumbria

Julia and I are in Cumbria exploring a rather special church, designed and built by a special lady, Sarah Losh.

The Church of St Mary's is a highly original work of architecture – the product of the exhuberant imagination of Miss Sarah Losh (1785-1853) who designed and built the Church in 1840-1842 as a memorial to her beloved sister Catherine and to her parents. It has many French and Italian features.

Church of St Oswald Eden Valley

If you want to visit a stunning church, try St Oswald, Kirkoswald in the Eden Valley, Cumbria. A charming building with character, history, it's own well with sweet tasting water, and a tower seperated from the actual church! While the church is tucked away in the valley, the tower is up on the hillside - presumably to make the call to worship more audible.

St Mary's 2014

St Mary's Hospice provides care for patients across South Cumbria from its base in Ulverston. The Hospice is the most successful charity partner with Furness Building Society, with its supporters generating payments of more than £140,000 each year from the Society's own funds simply by saving in the St Mary's accounts with the Furness. Moreover, the savers earn a good rate of interest on their money in the easy access accounts, and The more they save - the more the Society gives to St Mary's from its own funds, not the savers money.which remains is safe and secure with the Furness.

Art and Craft: Jenny Uglow and AN Wilson

AN Wilson's The Potter's Hand, a novel about the Wedgwood dynasty, and Jenny Uglow's The Pinecone, a life of the forgotten female architect, Sarah Losh, pay homage to their visionary protagonists. Josiah Wedgwood was an inventor, designer, supporter of the French and American Revolutions, anti-slave trade campaigner and founder of the English ceramics industry. Wilson's father was Managing Director of the company Wedgwood created. Sarah Losh, designer of the breathtaking St Mary's Church in Cumbria, was the independent daughter of a progressive family, friends of Wordsworth and Coleridge, and an over-looked romantic heroine. Jenny Uglow, who grew up in Cumbria, rescues her from oblivion.
