Heritage Open Days at HS2 St. Mary's, Stoke Mandeville
HS2 hosted a day of heritage and archaeology for local people in September as we joined forces with National Trust's 'Heritage Open Days', allowing residents to learn more about Stoke Mandeville's history and visit the nearby old church site of St Mary the Virgin.
Archaeologists working on the project in St. Mary’s were on hand to give guided tours on site while heritage specialists at Stoke Mandeville Village Community Centre gave hourly talks about the exciting potential archaeological discoveries they expect to uncover in the area.

Miraculous Medal - Catherine Labouré
November 27 marked the 177th anniversary of the Medal of the Immaculate Conception, popularly known by Catholics the world over as the Miraculous Medal. The Miraculous Medal has a special place in the hearts of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception, since it paved the way for the Church's official declaration of the dogma in 1854.
The medal is striking because Our Lady herself presented the familiar design.
The front of the medal depicts Mary standing on a globe, with the head of a serpent beneath her feet. Circling the oval-shaped medal is the signature, O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. On the reverse, twelve stars surround a large M, from which a cross arises. Below the M, the medal depicts two flaming hearts. The left heart, circled with thorns, represents Jesus. The right heart, pierced by a sword, symbolizes Mary.
An Unlikely Helper
The extraordinary story begins on the night of July 18, 1830, when a mysterious child awakens Sister Catherine Laboure. The child leads her to the convent's chapel. There, Sister Catherine sees the Virgin Mary, sitting in a chair. She kneels beside Mary, and rests her hands in the Virgin's lap. The two speak for several hours. During the conversation, Mary promises she will return and give the young nun a mission. The child leads Catherine back to her bed. Catherine hears the clock strike 2 a.m., July 19.
A little more than four months later, Sister Catherine learns what Mary wants.
During her evening meditation on Nov. 27, 1830, Catherine has a vision of Mary standing in a position similar to the depiction on the medal. Later, the vision changes to include the inscription found on the front side of the medal.
Mary speaks to Catherine, saying, Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around their neck.
Iconic Attraction
It was as Mary said. The medal's effects were immediate.
The first medals were made in 1832 and distributed throughout Paris. According to the Association of the Miraculous Medal, the blessings that Mary promised began to shower down on wearers of the medal. The devotion spread rapidly. In 1836, a Church investigation declared the apparitions to be genuine.
Since Mary asked Catherine to have the medal struck, devotion to the Miraculous Medal has spread the world over, the image having achieved iconic stature.
But what does the medal mean? In answering that, one discovers why it works.
The Front Side
• Mary stands on a globe, crushing a serpent beneath her feet. Describing the original vision, Catherine said the Blessed Mother appeared radiant as a sunrise, in all her perfect beauty.
• Rays shoot out from Mary's hands, which she told Catherine, ... symbolize the graces I shed upon those who ask for them.
• Words from the vision form an oval frame around Mary: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
Seen as a matrix, the elements of the front design encapsulate major Marian tenets:
Quality of Our Lady As Illustrated by the Medal
• Mother Her open arms, the recourse we have in her
• Immaculate The words, conceived without sin
• Assumed into Heaven She stands on the globe
• Mediatrix Rays from her hands symbolizing graces
• Our Protection Crushes the serpent (Gn. 3:15)
The Reverse Side
• A cross-and-bar surmounts a large, bold M
• 12 stars disperse around the perimeter
• Two hearts are depicted underneath the M, the left lapped with a crown of thorns, the right skewed by a sword. From each, a flame emanates from the top. Again, employing a grid analysis, we can see how the reverse-side design contains great symbolism reflecting major tenets of the Catholic faith.
Design Element and its Catholic Meaning
• The large letter M — Mary as Mother, Mediatrix.
• Cross and bar — Jesus' cross of Redemption.
• 12 stars — 12 Apostles, who formed the first Church.
• Left Heart — The Sacred Heart, who died for our sins.
• Right Heart — The Immaculate Heart, who intercedes for us.
• Flames — The burning love Jesus and Mary have for us.
The Association of the Miraculous Medal, in Perryville, Mo., notes that there is no superstition or magic connected with the Miraculous Medal, nor is it a good luck charm. Rather, it is a testimony to faith and the power of trusting prayer. Its greatest miracles are those of patience, forgiveness, repentance, and faith.

Shrine of the Immaculate Conception October 2015
One of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in northwest Missouri, the Immaculate Conception Church was designed by Edmund J. Eckel, who designed many of St. Joseph's architectural jewels. It was erected in 1908 after the previous church building was destroyed by fire. Its stained glass windows were imported from Innsbruck, Austria, and are embedded 18 inches into the walls. They depict the life of Mary, Mother of Jesus, from her birth to her coronation as Queen of Heaven.
The altars were rescued from a nearby parish, called Saints Peter and Paul, which served St. Joseph's Polish community until it closed and merged with the Immaculate Conception parish in 1978. The combined parish adopted the name Queen of the Apostles to commemorate both parishes.
It was used by several groups before it was closed by the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph in 1992. It was deeded to a nonprofit group and renamed “Twin Spires.”
In 2002, the St. Joseph Museum took over management of the facility before selling it to private investors Ed and Linda Hood the following year. It was used as a wedding chapel and reception hall for more than a decade.
The St. Mary and St. Joseph Family Memorial Foundation has purchased the property to open the first national pro-life shrine in the country.

Places to see in ( Henley on Thames - UK )
Henley-on-Thames is a historic market town and civil parish on the River Thames in Oxfordshire, England, 9 miles northeast of Reading, 7 miles west of Maidenhead and 23 miles southeast of Oxford. One of Henley on Thames boundaries has the tripoint of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.
Henley Bridge is a five arched bridge across the river built in 1786. It is a Grade I listed building. During 2011 the bridge underwent a £200,000 repair programme after being hit by the boat Crazy Love in August 2010. About a mile upstream of the bridge is Marsh Lock. Chantry House is the second Grade I listed building in the town. It is unusual in having more storeys on one side than on the other.
The Church of England parish church of St Mary the Virgin is nearby, and has a 16th-century tower. The Old Bell is a pub in the centre of Henley. The building has been dated from 1325: the oldest-dated building in the town of Henley on Thames. To celebrate Queen Victoria's Jubilee, 60 oak trees were planted in the shape of a Victoria Cross near Fair Mile.
Henley on Thames railway station is on the Henley Branch Line from Twyford. There are direct trains into London Paddington during peak hours. At other times one must change trains at Twyford. There are express mainline rail services from Reading (6 miles or 10 km away) to Paddington.
Henley is a world-renowned centre for rowing. Each summer the Henley Royal Regatta is held on Henley Reach, a naturally straight stretch of the river just north of the town. It was extended artificially. The event became Royal in 1851, when Prince Albert became patron of the regatta. Other regattas and rowing races are held on the same reach, including Henley Women's Regatta, the Henley Boat Races for women's and lightweight teams between Oxford and Cambridge University, Henley Town and Visitors Regatta, Henley Veteran Regatta, Upper Thames Small Boats Head, Henley Fours and Eights Head, and Henley Sculls. These Heads often attract strong crews that have won medals at National Championships.

Tomb of Mary in Jerusalem Video
In today Video I am taking you to visit the Tomb of Mary in Jerusalem which is located at the slop of the Mount of Olives and it is within the Church of the Assumption Jerusalem.
In Christian belief, death is our punishment for the original sin. Regarding Mary, the mother of Jesus, God is believed to have shielded here from the stain of original sin at the time of her own conception; moreover Mary remained a virgin throughout her life. As such, Mary was the first among all human beings to experience resurrection.
Catholics believe that Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven while she slept at the site that is now the basement of the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion. The Eastern Orthodox including the Greek Church claim that Mary died in her sleep (the Dormition of the Theotokos), buried and only then experienced resurrection from the tomb.
Today, the Church over the Tomb of Virgin Mary in Jerusalem, which was built back in the 14th century by the Franciscans, is controlled by the Greek Orthodox Church and the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Now let's enter the Church of the Tomb of Mary mother of Jesus in Jerusalem.
While the entrance gate dates back to the Crusaders, the three stairs in front of the entrance are new in order to prevent against flood water.47 steps lead to the depths of the cave but there are also important graves halfway down. Here to the right at this chapel, are the traditional graves of Marry's parents Anne and Joachim -- here to the right is the tomb of Anne and here is the tome of Joachim. Lower down on the left hand side, is the tomb of Joseph the Carpenter of Nazareth, Jesus' adoptive father and Mary's husband.
The Underground hall is shaped like a Cross but in now temporary T shape as the area opposite the stairs is blocked off because of flood damage.
To the right, there is the chapel housing Mary's Tomb. We are now entering the chapel to see and touch the Tomb of the Virgin Mary -- the burial place Mary mother Jesus. The Glass plates surround the tomb of Mary in order to prevent pilgrims from taking mementoes and here above the Tomb of Mary, is an opening in the ceiling symbolizing Mary ascent to heaven.
During the years the Moslems ruled Jerusalem, they built a prayer nice (Mihrab) in the cave facing East to Mecca and it is here to the left of the Tomb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Behind Mary's Tomb, further along the cave, there is a painting of the Holy Mother and her son, to which Christians attribute special powers.
On the western side there is a Coptic altar.
Every year on August 15, while Christians all over the world celebrate the Assumption of Mary, a big ceremony is taking place here at the Mary Tomb in Jerusalem -- the actual burial place Mary mother Jesus...both by the Catholic and the Orthodox ......... for each of them I have a separate video.

Victoria Caroline Beckham, popularly known as ‘Posh Spice’, is a former member of the largest English girl band, ‘Spice Girls’. Although her musical career with the ‘Spice Girls’ gave a nudge to her successful image but it is her own hard work as an entrepreneur and a fashion designer that has made her 52nd richest woman in Britain, one of the 100 most powerful women in the UK and 19th richest person in the UK along with her famous soccer star husband, David Beckham. She was born and brought up in an upper middle class environment and her aspiration to have a musical career was fulfilled by her parents by encouraging her to study acting, music, dancing and modeling. Beckham is not just a pop artist, a business woman and a fashion designer but also a writer of two bestselling books. She is a successful owner of a denim line, fragrance line, sunglasses collection and posh and expensive line for classy dresses, which stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz were noticed donning.
------------------------------
Childhood & Early Life
Victoria Beckham was born on April 17, 1974 at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex, England, to Jacqueline Doreen and Anthony William Adams. Her father was an electronic engineer and her mother was an insurance clerk and hairdresser.
Victoria was brought up in Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire, where her parents had a wholesale business of electronic items. It provided a posh upbringing for her - a fact for which she was bullied at St. Mary’s High School.
To encourage Victoria to pursue her passions, her parents enrolled her at the Jason Theatre School. She later got admission into the Laine Theatre Arts academy in Surrey, where she studied dance and modeling.
------------------------------
Career
In 1993, Victoria was selected for ‘Spice Girls’, along with Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm. She was chosen to be a part of the band out of the 400 girls who auditioned.
The group was put together by manager Chris Herbert but the girls wanted more creative control and soon broke off with him. In 1996, ‘Spice’ was released and its hit single ‘Wannabe’ became a top dancing number in 29 countries.
After selling 20 million copies of ‘Spice’, ‘Spice Girls’ released their second album, ‘Spiceworld’, in 1997. The album did not do as well as the first one, even though they came up with a movie with the same title.
In 2000, Spice Girls again attempted for commercial success with their third album, ‘Forever’ but unfortunately the album bombed pretty badly commercially and it led to their band break up and Victoria started to concentrate on her solo career.
In 2000, Beckham released her solo number, ‘Out of Your Mind’ but she was outsold by Spiller’s number. The same happened when she released her second solo, ‘Not Such An Innocent Girl’ as Kylie Minogue’s number outperformed it.
In 2001, she released her autobiography, titled, ‘Learning to Fly’. It climbed to the top of the bestsellers list in the UK. It had stories of her childhood, ‘Spice Girls’ and her marriage to David Beckham.
Beckham’s next single with Virgin Records was ‘A Mind of Its Own’, released in 2002, but it failed to top the charts which fired the rumors that Beckham was to be dropped by the label.
In 2003, she was scheduled to release ‘Come Together’ in the States by Fuller and Dash. But the album was shelved due to creative difference between the two partners. She became the face of an urban clothing line, ‘Rocawear’.
Beckham turned to television in 2004 when she came out with a reality television series featuring herself and her husband ‘The Real Beckhams’. It was a reality series on their life as a couple.
In the same year, Beckham partnered with Rock & Republic and released her premium denim line, ‘VB Rocks’. She also released her individual line of sunglasses and his-and-her fragrance line called ‘Intimately Beckham’.
In 2006, she released her second book ‘That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything in Between’. It was primarily based on her talent as a fashionista, consisting of style tips from the diva herself, making it a bestseller.
In 2007, Beckham moved to the states with her family as her husband signed a deal with MLS’s Los Angeles Galaxy. Beckham used this opportunity and starred in her own NBC Special, ‘Victoria Beckham: Coming to America’.

St Mary and St Bodfan Church, Llanaber
The first Church on this site was probably built by Bodfan, a Celtic Saint of the sixth century. This Bodfan may have been the son of Helig ap Glannog whose territory was destroyed by the great inundation that formed the Lanvan Sands which lie between the Great Orme’s Head and the Menai Straits off the North Wales coast. After the disaster both Helig and his sons embraced a religious life. The Church at Aber, in Gwynedd, is dedicated to St Bodfan and he may be the same Saint associated with Llanaber. One of Bodfan’s brothers was Celynin, who likewise has a Church dedicated to him at Llangelynin in the Conway Valley and at Llangelynin near Llwyngwril, a few miles south of Llanaber. Other brothers were Brothen, who founded the Church at Llanfrothern and Boda and Gwynin who founded the Church at Dwygyfylchi near Penmaenmawr.
Bodfan, no doubt, built his Church of wood and wattle but of that building no trace remains. With the coming of the Normans the art of building in stone was also introduced and, following their custom, many Welsh dedications were either changed to, or coupled with, the names of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the Apostles. Ancient maps refer to the Church as St Bodfan’s and an association with the Saint is preserved in the name of the nearby Bodfan Farm, but the Church is today more popularly known as St Mary’s.
The present church dates from the early thirteenth century. One of its great benefactors was Hywel ap Meredydd ap Cynan, the Lord of Ardudwy, the commot which has given its name to the Rural Deanery of Ardudwy in which the Parish of Llanaber is situated. This Hywel was a near relative of Llewelyn the Great.
The plan of the church consists of a Nave, with North and South Aisles, and a long narrow Chancel. Entering the Church by the South Porch, rebuilt in the nineteenth century, the visitor notices the very fine South Doorway, reputed by many to be one of the finest examples of Early English architecture in the country, This doorway, built of yellow sandstone, is deeply recessed and is composed of six shafts on either side. The north door opposite is much narrower and of simple design.
The Nave is divided on either side into five arcades. Here we see a wonderful example of transition from Norman Architecture to the Early English Style. The piers are Norman in character with foliated capitals from which spring pointed arches. The four Clerestory windows on either side of the Nave are delightful examples of Early English Lancets, whilst the two long Lancets of the west wall are part of the nineteenth century restoration.
The Chancel, which is separated from the Nave by an Early English arch, approached by a flight of steps, necessitated by the sloping nature of the site on which the Church is built. The East Window is a perfect example of a single Early English Lancet with very wide splays and shafts in the inner arch.
The main Roof Timbers, both in the Nave and Chancel, date from the sixteenth century, whilst the ceiling above the Sanctuary is panelled and its bosses and carvings picked out in gilt and colour.
In 1860 extensive work of Restoration was carried out. The Bell turret was rebuilt as well as most of the west wall with its heavy buttresses. The small vestry adjoining the North side of the Chancel was also constructed at the same time on the site of a previous building.
The glass in the windows dates from the latter part of the nineteenth century and is on the whole good with the design in the Clerestory windows depicting angels with musical instruments.
Most of the monuments date from the nineteenth century.
The Calixtus Stone. In the north west corner of the Church will be found two ancient stones. One is the Calixtus Stone, placed in the Church in the 19th century and having been previously used as a footbridge on a neighbouring Farm. The inscription has been read as:
CAELIXTUS MONEDO REGI
and is supposed to mean Calixtus King of Mona.
The parish registers date back to the year 1750. Interesting relics in the Church comprise two wooden collection boxes with handles and dated 1756 and 1774 respectively, whilst near the south entrance may be seen an old Church warden’s chest, cut out of a single log of wood.
The Font is octagonal in shape. The bowl is modern and it stands on a very much older shaft.
In 1969 the year of the Investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales, the Church was again extensively restored. The timbers of the roofs were treated against woodworm and new timbers inserted where necessary. The seating of the church was also renewed with surplus pews from St John’s Church, Barmouth. The Compton Two Manual and Pedal Organ, a memorial gift, was dedicated by the Bishop of Bangor, in whose Diocese the Parish is, on Trinity Sunday, June 1st 1969 (the eve of the feast of St Bodfan) at the time of the re-hallowing of the Church after Restoration.
March for the NHS - Rehana Azam at BBC News at 10
Save Our Hospitals campaigners will be joining the March for the NHS, please check this site and support our NHS:
Now the NHS can only be saved by us.
Charing Cross Hospital is to be demolished; more than half the land sold off for development; A&E, neurosurgery, stroke and urology services will move; and the rebuilt hospital will see inpatient bed numbers fall from 360 to 24 (!). Some services will transfer to far-off St Mary’s, Paddington – which is already operating at “maximum utilisation”.
However, it’s happy days for residents, according to Imperial College Healthcare Trust, because the redevelopment will make “better use of the estate”:
There is no proposal to close our A&E at Charing Cross Hospital.” (A&E is being “changed” not closed, people). “We are awaiting further guidance from NHS England to guide the development of emergency services appropriate for a local hospital.
Hmm “guidance to guide”! So, they know they’re selling the land, they know they’re shifting services to St Mary’s, they know the redevelopment will slash bed numbers to less than a tenth of today’s, but they still don’t know / won’t say in this pre-General Election year what future emergency services are “appropriate for a local hospital.” Stefano Hatfield

Introdução de St. Louis Marie de Montfort
