An Exploration of St Nicolas Church in Old Shoreham, West Sussex.
I have come to Shoreham in West Sussex to have a look at the 9th Century Saxon church that was updated by the Normans and later by the Victorians. There are some interesting carvings, a lovely old flint and rubble tower and more Normanisation than when the Norman actually rebuilt it.
Join me for a quick jaunt around a remarked English church.

Places to see in ( Shoreham by Sea - UK )
Shoreham-by-Sea is a seaside town and port in West Sussex, England. Shoreham by Sea is bordered to its north by the South Downs, to its west by the Adur Valley and to its south by the River Adur and Shoreham Beach on the English Channel.
Shoreham by Sea lies in the middle of the ribbon of urban development along the English south coast, approximately equidistant from the city of Brighton and Hove to the east and the town of Worthing to the west. Shoreham covers an area of 984.88 hectares.
Old Shoreham dates back to pre-Roman times. St Nicolas' Church, inland by the River Adur, is partly Anglo-Saxon The name of the town has an Old English origin. The town and port of New Shoreham was established by the Norman conquerors towards the end of the 11th century.
Shoreham Beach, to the south of the town, is a shingle spit deposited over millennia by longshore drift, as an extension to Lancing parish in the west. This blocks the southerly flow of the River Adur which turns east at this point to discharge into the English Channel further along the coast at a point that has varied considerably over time.
Shoreham Airport lies to the west of the main town and has been in private ownership since 2006. It is the UK's oldest licensed airport still in operation and has a 1936 Grade II*-listed Art Deco terminal building. The town is served by Shoreham-by-Sea railway station, located on the West Coastway Line. Local bus services are provided by the Brighton & Hove bus company, Stagecoach South and a local town route is operated by Compass Travel. Shoreham Tollbridge crosses the River Adur in the west of the town. This bridge is a Grade II* listed building and was the last Sussex toll bridge in use.

Walks in England: Crossing The Old Shoreham Tollbridge
Today I am up early to cross the old Shoreham Toll Bridge over the River Adur in West Sussex. The grade 2 listed crossing was first built in 1781 and later rebuilt in 1916 and then recently renovated at huge expense. Until 1970 it took road vehicles, including buses and lorries. It was part of the busy A27. No longer, it is now a charming footbridge and well worth a look.

Exploring the River Adur Estuary at Shoreham-by-Sea
Julia is back out walking and brings her lovely newborn, Joseph, to join me for a stroll along the river Adur just north of Shoreham. We are exploring the estuary with its airport adjacent, World War Two pill boxes and the old toll bridge.
There is also the monument erected in memory of the eleven men who died as a result of the air disaster in 2015 at the Shoreham Air Show that year.

The Surrey with the fringe on top - St Peter and St Paul Church, Albury, Guildford (Compton organ)
Another of me playing the magnificent Compton pipe organ at St Peter and St Paul Church in Albury, Surrey.
I am only an amateur and by no means a pro so wanted to point this out and hope you are still able to get the jist of the amazing skills of the John Compton Organ Company Ltd.
Being in Surrey I just had to play 'The Surrey with the fringe on top' by Rodgers and Hammerstein from the musical 'Oklahoma!'. Comptons did built cinema organs of course. I had planned to play this in 'straight' mode. However, when I put down the tremulants I was amazed at how close this organ sounded to one of its cinema organ counterparts.
Many thanks to the church wardens for allowing me access to this wonderful Compton organ.
NOTE: this is purely my interest in order to make sure that these fine organs are archived forever and I do not make any monetary profit by this video being on youtube.
For more information on the John Compton Organ Company Ltd and to see me play other Compton organs, please click on the following link for my site dedicated to the John Compton Organ Company Ltd:
REQUEST: I am always on the lookout for Compton organs to play - particularly electrones - so if you know of any churches which still have these then please do let me know. I will happily give a donation or pay any applicable room hire charge.
If you have an interest in Compton organs then I invite you to join my facebook group at:
