A CHURCH in Morpeth, Northumberland, unveiled an icon to its Patron Saint.
The image of St Robert of Newminster was blessed by the Abbot of Nunraw Abbey, Scotland, the Rt Rev Dom Mark Caira.

Robert Of Newminster, Saint, Abbot, (Benedictine) Cistercians (1100-1159) A priest from North Yorkshire who took the Benedictine habit at Whitby and obtained permission to join some monks of York who were attempting to live according to a new interpretation of the Benedictine rule at Fountains abbey (1132). Fountains soon became Cistercian and one of the centres of the White Monks in N. England. Newminster abbey in Northumberland was founded from it in 1137, and Robert became its first abbot. He is described as gentle and merciful in judgement. His feast day is June 7

Anyone for a night at the opera at Morpeth?
THERE'S a music feast in store for fans of Gilbert & Sullivan at Morpeth, Northumberland, on Saturday.
The Mid Northumberland Chorus opens its show at Chantry Middle School at 7.30pm with excerpts from their best known comic operettas including The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore and The Mikado.
It will be completed by a concert version of Trial By Jury, a spoof on the law and the legal profession.
In this video Gillian Irvine, a founder member, talks about the Chorus, and Musical Director Paul Toward tells us what to expect from Saturday night's show.
For anyone who can't make Saturday, there will be a second performance at 7.30pm at Holy Sepulchre Church, Ashington, on Wednesday, June 10.

Part 5 of a series of videos of monasteries that were dissolved by Henry VIII of England in the Dissolution of the Monasteries (Suppression of the Monasteries). From 1536 - 1541 Henry VIII disbanded monasteries in England, Wales, and Ireland. Some monastic foundations dated back to Anglo-Saxon England, the overwhelming majority of the 825 religious communities dissolved by Henry VIII owed their existence to the wave of monastic enthusiasm that had swept England and Wales in the 11th and 12th centuries. NOTE: This series does not include every monastery that was apart of the Dissolution of Monasteries. Only those for which pictures and information could be found.
