The Loch Ness Monster and St Columba / Colmcille of Derry
This documentary explains how there's a long historical link between the Loch Ness Monster and my area, Lough Foyle. The sea monster's oldest enemy is St Columba, also known as Colmcille who founded the city of Derry. Could there be a connection between the recent sea monster sighting in the Foyle and our city's patron saint Colmcille..?
IN SEARCH OF ST COLUMBA
IN SEARCH OF SAINT COLUMBA
Friday June 9th is the Feast day of one of the major apostles of Christianity in Scotland - St Columba.
From his early life in Ireland to his decision to leave his homeland and found a monastic community on the Scottish Island of Iona, he changed the landscape of our nation and world forever. Watch his inspiring story here as we go in search for Saint Columba.
Celtic Saints Series - Saint Columba
Stream #15 - This is the second of what I hope will be several short talks on the lives and works of the Celtic Orthodox saints of Ireland, Scotland and Wales... (oh, and the Orthodox saints of England too!)
In today's talk we will discuss the history, legends and life of Saint Columba - one of the patron saints of Scotland. Was he a part of the earliest recorded copyright issue that led to the actual spilling of blood in Ireland? Why did he found the monastery at Iona off the western coast of Scotland? Is it possible he was involved in the first recorded sighting, and subsequent banishment, of the Loch Ness Monster? Join me and let's learn more about the life of this amazing man...Saint Columba!

Columcille the Irish Saint & Miracle worker
This is the heritage centre in Donegal which celebrates Columcilles life. He is an inspiring Saint of Irish history, second only to the great Saint Patrick. His banishment from Ireland is a story of controversy over a book & its copy. It was his attempt to copy a manuscript that preceded the first ever record of copyright.

Saint Columba
Short Biography of early Irish Saint.
The Life Of Saint Columba, Apostle Of Scotland, Frances Alice Forbes, Unabridged Catholic Audiobook
Saint Columba (521 – 597) was an Irish abbot and missionary credited with spreading Christianity in present-day Scotland. He founded the important abbey on Iona, which became a dominant religious and political institution in the region for centuries. He is the Patron Saint of Derry. He was highly regarded by both the Gaels of Dál Riata and the Picts, and is remembered today as a Christian saint and one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.
Columba reportedly studied under some of Ireland's most prominent church figures and founded several monasteries in the country. Around 563 he and his twelve companions crossed to Dunaverty near Southend, Argyll in Kintyre before settling in Iona in Scotland, then part of the Irish kingdom of Dál Riata, where they founded a new abbey as a base for spreading Christianity among the northern Pictish kingdoms who were pagan. He remained active in Irish politics, though he spent most of the remainder of his life in Scotland. Three surviving early medieval Latin hymns may be attributed to him.

How Early Medieval Irish Helped Save Western Civilization- Prog.5 of 12- [28 mins]
Prog.5 (28 minutes) of 12-part radio documentary series “Back From The Brink- The Heroic Contribution of The Irish in Helping To Save Western Civilization!”
This 5th program in 12-part series continues to investigate the heroic exploits of Saint Columba of Iona (aka- Columcille) and how he helped convert Scotland to Christianity.
To be downloaded for non-profit purposes only, in adherence with the universal truth- “What you do for yourself dies with you, what you do for others lives forever.”
Theme behind this series
The annals of history record that as the Roman Empire disintegrated into ruin, the newly Christianized and newly literate Early Medieval Irish of this era (450 to 850 AD) helped to re-launch Western Civilization by leaving their native land to fan out through Europe, and establish hundreds of monastic centres of learning and scholarship, thus helping to reconnect a culturally decimated post-Roman Empire Europe with her rich literary, classical and Christian heritage!
