St. Georg fighting with the dragon - Nikolaiviertel Berlin
Sculpture St. Georg im Kampf mit dem Drachen in the Nikolaiviertel in Berlin-Mitte. The Nikolaiviertel (German for Nicholas Quarter) is the reconstructed historical core of Berlin, Germany, founded in the 13th century. It is located 5 minutes away from Alexanderplatz. The Nikolai church is in the center of the district.
The small area is famous for its traditional German restaurants and bars. Between 1997 and 1999 all houses were reconditioned (Lotusan mit Lotus-Effect), giving this area an unmistakable touch.

Saint George, 3rd Courtyard of Prague Castle, 1373

The equestrian statue of St. George slaying the dragon, one of jewels of Gothic art, is perhaps the first equestrian statue in Czech lands to be erected outdoors in a public place.
On 3rd Prague Castle Courtyard you can not miss the Gothic equestrian statue of St. George slaying the dragon. This statue, nowadays a part of fountain, is perhaps the first equestrian statue in Czech lands to be erected outdoors in a public place.
The bronze statue, whose original is in the National Gallery, was cast in 1373 by the iron founders George and Martin of Cluj. It is considered probably the oldest surviving, free-standing statue in Bohemia sited in the open air. Gothic statues are normally connected to walls of cathedrals and monasteries, forming only an addition to the decoration and frequently not even finished at the back. The statue of St George however was regarded as a work of art in its own right, with its own merit and therefore worthy of being sited independently. So far it is not known where its precise location was originally, but during great rebuiding of the Castle by architect Josip Plecnik (1920-1934) it was placed here as a part of newly constitued fountain.
vanderkrogt.net:
Roman soldier from Syria Palaestina and a priest in the Guard of Diocletian, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. He is immortalized in the tale of Saint George and the Dragon.
The sculpture cannot be classified as an equestrian monument. It depicts the culminating moment of the St George legend of Jacobus de Voragine, when the saint on horseback strikes the dragon to the ground with his lance, so that the princess can then lead it off, attached to her belt, to the liberated city. The composition is defined by the main vertical axis, represented by the (lost) lance, around which the horse, rider and dragon turn. Among medieval monuments, it is the only surviving execution of this motif in a large, three-dimensional bronze work. The motif, with its dynamic, revolving composition, is frequently found in paintings and reliefs. Aside from reliefs and small statues, author draws attention to the closest analogy to the Prague sculpture: the illusive painting of a St George sculpture on a bracket, executed by Giovannino dei Grassi on the jamb of the northern sacristy in the Milan cathedral in 1395.
On that occasion, Giangaleazzo was elevated to a dukedom by Václav IV, King of Bohemia and of the Romans (or rather, by his plenipotentiary Benes of Choustník). Even if, in the future, the court at which the Prague sculpture was made is identified, along with the person who commissioned it and the person who designed the model (including confirmation of the role of the brothers of Cluj), even if the journey of the sculpture to Prague is reconstructed, the work will remain a testimony to the inspiring influence of the northern Italian milieu.
theepochtimes.com:
There’s always something special in the air every time we get across a statue of St. George slaying the dragon. Its compositions are some of the most dynamic, alive, and tense. They inspire us with his heroism, determination, and will to save the people from that bad dragon.
We feel at ease while realizing again that evil gets his divine retribution. But there is a statue of Saint George that tells us even more, and that is the “St. George Slaying the Dragon” statue from Prague’s National Gallery.
This old and small gothic statue is the first known equestrian statue that wasn’t linked to a particular building and that decorated an open space. It was cast in 1373 by two Romanian sculptors from Cluj, Martin and George, at the order of King Charles IV, on marrying his son, Sigismund of Luxemburg, with Mary of Anjou, daughter of the Hungarian king, Louis the Great.

Germany Travel Attractions - Schwabentor in Freiburg
Take a tour of Schwabentor in Freiburg, Germany -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Once a guardian of Freiburg, the Schwabentor remains a striking memorial to the city's past.
The Schwabentor is a gate tower from the days when Freiburg had defensive walls.
The image on the south side of the tower is St. George, said to be a great slayer of dragons.
Only the Schwabentor and its brother tower, the Martinstor, remain from medieval times.
The newer of the two towers, it was built in 1250 and has been well maintained since.
Today, the Schwabentor is nearly identical to its original structure.

Dragons of the Ishtar Gate - Excerpt BBC Radio
In the late 1930s, a science writer by the name of Willie Ley began research the Sirrush in Babylonian art history, and found that not only does it appear in other works, but was actually a common feature of art spanning thousands of years. With the rumours of dinosaur-like creatures stalking the dark corners of Africa, Ley believed that it was possible the Babylonians had not only heard of such a creature, but have seen one -- or even had one living in captivity within their city walls, behind the Ishtar Gate.

Prince Charles takes over Remembrance Sunday duty as teary Queen looks on
Prince Charles takes over Remembrance Sunday duty as teary Queen looks on
SHEDDING a tear in the bitter cold, the Queen watched a Remembrance Sunday service as Prince Charles led the nation in honouring Britain’s war dead today.
In a historic transfer of royal duties, the 91-year-old monarch stood beside Prince Philip on a Foreign Office balcony as Prince Charles – in the uniform of Marshal of the RAF – laid the first wreath on behalf of his mother.
She and her consort, with whom she will celebrate 70 years of marriage on November 20, watched the service at the Cenotaph, central London, alongside the Duchess of Cornwall.
On a neighbouring balcony the Duchess of Cambridge joined Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and the Queen’s cousin Princess Alexandra to watch a ceremony that marked the changing of the royal guard.
In the corner of the balcony, Philip, at 96 one of the last survivors of the Second World War to be present at the service, looked frail and uncomfortable.
Wearing the uniform of Admiral of the Fleet, he appeared to struggle to stand at times.
An equerry laid Philip’s wreath before Charles, who will be 69 on Tuesday, returned to lay his tribute of red poppies at the foot of Sir Edwin Lutyens’s monument to the fallen in Whitehall.
The Duke of Cambridge, wearing an RAF squadron leader’s uniform, and Prince Harry, in the uniform of a captain in the Household Cavalry’s Blues and Royals, also laid wreaths.
On a chilly autumn morning, 10,000 veterans, their medals proudly pinned to their chests, and serving military personnel paraded in Whitehall.
Prime Minister Theresa May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn both bowed at length after laying their wreaths.
Former Prime Ministers David Cameron, Gordon Brown, Tony Blair and Sir John Major also attended the ceremony.
A pipe bomb was discovered close to a war memorial in Omagh, Northern Ireland, before a Remembrance parade took place there today.
The march was diverted and wreath laying at the County Tyrone town’s cenotaph was postponed after the area was sealed off.
In 1998, a bomb planted by the Real IRA killed 29 in the busy market town. Northern Ireland Chief Constable George Hamilton described today's pipe bomb as “sickening and appalling”
