Places to see in ( Gorran Haven - UK )
Gorran Haven is a fishing village on the south coast of Cornwall, England, UK. It is about 2 miles south of Mevagissey. The village lies in a cove between two sandy beaches. Vault Beach (also known as Bow beach) is south of Gorran Haven and Great Perhaver Beach is to the north. Gorran Haven lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park.
Gorran Haven was an ancient fishing harbour; its first pier was built in the 15th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries it became a port handling merchandise brought from Fowey by barges and lighters. The pier was rebuilt in the 1820s and reconstructed in 1888.
There is two churches in the village, Haven Church (previously Mount Zion,) and St Just Church. St Just Church had been used as a fish cellar for over a century. In 1812 the Congregationalists of Mevagissey moved into the Haven using St Just as their Meeting House and referring to it as the old Chapel Cellar. Haven Church is a non-denominational church.
The geologist Charles William Peach worked in the area and there is a plaque to his memory in the village. His son Ben Peach was born in Gorran Haven. The former head of MI6 Sir Richard Dearlove was born and initially raised in Gorran Haven. The writer Colin Wilson settled in Gorran Haven during the 1950s.

A Cornish Wartime Christmas 1942 - Ring Those Bells - Part 2
A four-part look at what Christmas was like in 1942 - the fourth wartime Christmas of the Second World War and one when the people of Britain were encouraged by the ringing of church bells. Using archive photos, old newspaper clippings, newsreel footage, old Christmas cards and postcards, old songs and sound recordings this video-book style presentation gives a snapshot of the festivities in Cornwall.
Part Two starts with a brief look at the Christmas post and the railways in wartime Cornwall. It then continues on the A-Z tour of the county featuring the festivities in town and village. It visits:
E -
F - Falmouth/Feock/Flushing/Four Burrows
G - Gorran Haven/Grampound/Gulval/Gunnislake
H - Hayle/Helland Bridge/Helston/Henwood
I - Illogan Highway/Illogan/Indian Queens
J - Jacobstow
K - Kehelland/Kelly Bray
L - Ladock/Landulph/Lanreath/Launceston/Lelant/Lerryn/Liskeard
L-P continues in Part Three.
Today we take so much for granted. This video is made to honour the generation who sacrificed so much so we could live in freedom and celebrate Christmas in peace.
If you have any photos of a Cornish wartime Christmas, or have a story to tell, please leave a comment.
Make sure you continue with Part Three, and if you have not yet seen A Cornish Wartime Christmas 1939, 1940 and 1941 they are worth checking out. If you like a good wartime novel then check out No Small Stir available on Amazon, Ebay and at all good bookshops. It is set in Cornwall during the invasion summer of 1940.
Thanks for reading, and thanks for watching.

Lostwithiel
Walk just a few minutes from here across the railway line and River Fowey and you are in Lostwithiel, ancient capital of Kernow, old Cornwall. In the 13th century, Lostwithiel was the county town and main stannery town of Cornwall, established by the Normans for the export of tin. The river then was wide and deep and sea-going vessels were tied up along the quay ready for their trips to the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. “The Port of Fowi” was the second largest on the South Coast of England – hard to believe now!
Today Lostwithiel is a peaceful, friendly and charming town with fine pubs, restaurants, antique shops, boutiques, galleries and food outlets a plenty to suit every taste.

Mevagissey is an attractive old town which was once the centre of Cornwall’s pilchard fishery and which still boasts a working harbour, with a few dozen small fishing boats. It has a tradition of boat building dating back to 1745.
Many of the old buildings, constructed of cob and slate, bear testimony to a time when the large shoals of pilchards were the livelihood of the whole village. The name Mevagissey is derived from the names of two saints, St Meva and St Issey. The first record is of a hamlet of this name in 1313, but there were local settlements in the Bronze Age. Two Bronze Age Burial Urns were discovered at nearby Portmellon.
From the top of Polkirt Hill there is a great view over the higgledy streets, the harbour and the yachting pool. Further out can be seen the golden sands of Polstreath Beach and the scenic coastal path over Chapel Point to Gorran Haven.
Hope you like and enjoy this new video. Made by Huggie2love
