INSIDE ST MARK'S ANGLICAN EPISCOPAL CHURCH, NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE
Doors Open Visit on October 20, 2013. The church was open to visitors, but was not one of the official stops for the Doors Open event, so there was no guide on hand, and the interior lights were not turned on, which made this video a challenge for my trusty old Kodak.
From the church website:
The land granted by the Crown for a Church lay midway between the town and the military establishment at Fort George. Work began quickly on the construction of a fine building with the stone being quarried from the escarpment and hauled to the site by the troops. It seemed for a while that the project was too ambitious for the small congregation and the work was not complete enough for the holding of services until 1809. The structure was rectangular and the outline of the extension for the chancel may still be seen in the floor boards. The building remains the oldest Anglican Church in continuous use in Ontario.
From Ontario Heritage Trust website:
Born in Westmoreland, England (now spelled Westmorland), Robert Addison was a Church of England clergyman who settled in Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) in 1792. At that time, Newark was the seat of the government of Upper Canada. Addison became chaplain of the legislature. The third Protestant clergyman to settle in Upper Canada, Addison was the only Anglican minister west of Kingston, and the sole pastor of any denomination in the Niagara Region. For this reason Addison regularly ministered to communities as far away as the Six Nations settlement along the Grand River, where his friend Joseph Brant translated the sermons he preached in the Mohawk Chapel. Addison oversaw the construction of St. Mark's Church in Newark, which was completed in 1809. St. Mark's was the first Anglican church in Upper Canada to hold regular services. Addison's congregation included many luminaries, such as General Isaac Brock and Colonel John Butler. It was Addison who conducted Brock's funeral service. During the War of 1812, he added military chaplain to his duties. When Newark was captured by American forces in 1813, Addison was held as a prisoner of war and St. Mark's Church was partially burned. A highly educated man, Addison contributed significantly to the Common Schools Act of 1816.
Addison's large personal library, the first in the new colony, is now preserved in Addison Hall, which is adjacent to the church.

The town is home to the Shaw Festival, a series of theatrical productions featuring the works of George Bernard Shaw, his contemporaries, or plays about his era (1856–1950), running from April to November. The festival operates three theatres in the centre of town: the Festival, Royal George, and Court House theatres, and features one of a repertory acting company, scenic staff, and collection of resident and guest directors considered some of the best in the English-speaking world.
The surrounding region enjoys a comparatively mild climate thanks to the adjoining lakes, and excellent soil for fruit production, for which it has become one of Canada's centres. In particular, NOTL has grown into a major viticultural region. Visitors flock to dozens of nearby wineries, including those making the world's largest volumes of ice wine. The town is also known for its gardens, art galleries, antique shops, and golf courses. There are many hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts, vacation rentals and spas in the area.
Historic sites
Most of the former military sites, such as Fort George, Navy Hall, and Butler's Barracks, have been restored. Fort George's restoration was done as a Make Work Project, guided by plans from the Royal Engineers, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, an early example of historic preservation. Fort George National Historic Site is a focal point in a collection of War of 1812 sites which, collectively, are managed by Parks Canada under the name Niagara National Historic Sites. That administrative name includes several national historic sites: Fort Mississauga, Mississauga Point Lighthouse (1804, the first on the Great Lakes), Navy Hall, Butler's Barracks, and Queenston Heights.
Niagara-on-the-Lake teems with historical plaques, many national and provincial, reflecting its significance in the establishment of many of the province's institutions. Among these were its first newspaper, lending library, parliament, historical museum, and governing body for the legal profession. Critical battles in the defence of Upper Canada took place here, at Queenston, including one in which heroine Laura Secord gained her fame. The town gave many black Americans their first taste of freedom, both as a stop on the Underground railroad for those travelling further into Upper Canada, and as a refuge in its own right. Its stock of Regency and Classical Revival buildings, considered the best in the country from the post-War of 1812 period, led the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to recommend that the town's historic district be designated a National Historic Site of Canada, a designation which was approved in 2003.The historic centre had already been designated as a provincial Heritage Conservation District under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1986. And, although it did not make the final list, the Historic District was considered for nomination as a World Heritage Site.
Other significant sites in Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL):
The town contains other National Historic Sites of Canada within its boundaries: the Battlefield of Fort George and nearby Fort George, Butler's Barracks, Fort Drummond, Fort Mississauga, the site of the Mississauga Point Lighthouse, the Niagara Apothecary (the oldest apothecary in Canada), the Niagara District Court House, Queenston Heights, Queenston-Chippawa Hydro-electric Plant, Willowbank and Vrooman's Battery.

McFarland House, built ca. 1800, is the oldest surviving building in Niagara-on-the-Lake. During the War of 1812 the house was used as both a hospital and Officers' Quarters, therefore it survived the Burning on Newark in December 1813. It is now open to the public for guided tours, as well as a tea patio and mini cafe.

Doors Open Niagara: the walk from St Mark's to the Masonic Hall, Niagara-on-the-Lake
October 20, 2013. According to the church's website, before the church was built(1809), Sunday services were held in several locations, including at times in the Masonic Hall. That was back in the days when the provincial government was located here.
Text on plaque:
:On September 17, 1792, John Graves Simcoe, Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, opened in this community, then the capital, the first provincial parliament. The legislature consisted of an appointed Legislative Council and an elected Legislative Assembly. Its opening marked the introduction of a form of representative government into this province. Previously, both the French and British regimes had been directed by a royal governor advised by an appointed council of officials and prominent citizens. This first parliament held all its sittings in Newark, as Simcoe had re-named Niagara, but the second was summoned to meet in 1797 at York (Toronto), the new seat of government.
Although it bears the name Niagara Lodge No. 2 with a founding date of 1795, the lineage of the Freemasons' lodge at Niagara-on-the-Lake takes it back to Queenston, then back beyond that over to old Fort Niagara while it was still in British possession, so the true founding date is more like 1780. The museum upstairs in the lodge building has a fascinating set of displays with artifacts reaching back to the earliest days. Open to the public only on special occasions, definitely worth a visit.
