Remembering our Mom
Now remembering our Dad who died 21 October, 2013.
Thanks views and commentst! A short video on the life of our Mom to emphasis her listening to others in her advocacy on mental health issues. As said in one of her fav movies Goodness is the greatest force in the world, Her advocacy showed that in the legacy she left us. Caregiving is what I think when I think of Mom, especially in the lens of the work of Dr. Ann Burack-Weiss (Mom wanted to meet her).
Rita Ann Bernadette Harding Wright, mom of 9, 4 grandchildren. Born Chicago, IL ( Saint Viator parish, Kedvale at Addison), 1932; died 11/15/2006, Newton NJ.
In 2012, missing our sister who died August 10. We were 9 children and she had the family gatherings after our Mom's death. Always in our hearts Mary. Thinking of Mary in terms of caregiving. Mary was a big ally the first 6 months of 2012 in garnering support for our brother and sister both hospitalized. Mary was right there to support in how she could! Our Dad is now somewhat adrift as he often just sat with her during the days. She became the center of this family the 6 years after Mom died. A tough time for our Dad who visited Mary almost daily.
Second generation Croatian-American mother (heimat: Vrboska, on Hvar), and Irish-American father. Mostly raised by her beloved Irish Catholic matriarch grandmother (Agnes), aunts, uncles. Two brothers she loved. Mom was the middle child, only daughter/sister.
My Mom had the genes of her Croatian greatgrandparents. They brought their 9 children on the boat to start a new life in Chicago. My GreatGreatGrandfather was a diver oft in the Chicago River as he died in the Adriatric Sea of his heimat. A true Dalmatian!
The old Catholic social conscience, the Kennedy family her heroes. Carmelite nun Aunt, another Aunt the Mother Superior of Sisters of Providence (Owens Hall, St Mary of the Woods, IN). we were raised in Niles, then Park Ridge, IL (Mary Seat of Wisdom, Sisters of Mercy). Her paternal grandparents helped in the establishment of Saint Viator's church, donating a stained glass window, bejeweled chalices. My Mom loved the inclusive church of Pope John XXIII, not the orthodoxy.
In 1969, to the west.. Lakewood, Colorado.. with lasting friends! Then family move to Green Township, Newton, NJ in1971. Our Mom raised the kids, later to work for the Department of the Army, Picatinny Arsenal, from which she retired. On retiring, she divorced and bought a house for herself.
Our Mom raised 9 children, all of whom graduated high school, enjoyed grandchildren, maintained houses, was a wife, had several part time jobs, then working fulltime after her children were raised. She had the time to volunteer, most significantly in a variety of offices with the Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She advocated and listened to many without judgment.
Posthumously, the Sussex County NJ Freeholders thanked her for years of advocacy. Her funeral had a sheriff's escort. An honor as my Mom generally phoned the police to complain about the jail time for people in lieu of mental health treatment.
Mom had a bumper sticker I read banned books for years. She donated money to a host of organizations.. People for the American Way, Community Service Society of NYC. She loved the promise of the Kennedy family. I first heard great praise of Barack Obama from Mom, a real politics follower. Our Mom was a Park Ridge mom, same time and town of Hillary Clinton, but she loved Obama and admired Tipper Gore. Our Mom lived in a prosperous county but would be horrified by the self satisfied modern day tea party types! Of course, a real Chicago Democrat political gal!
Mom loved books, Christmas, Alfred Hitchcock films, gardening peonies and children. She had a house but life was more than keeping house! Her first grandchild played professional minor league baseball signed from high school! Countless photos of children, their partners, grandchildren abounded. She was there for her grandchildren when their parents acted up! Her passing leaves a gulf in their lives.
Mom is buried on a hill overlooking the town of her last 35 years. (birthplace of Janeane Garofalo). Her death so sudden. Remembrances from so many... farmer friends, other Moms from her years as a young Mother, most of all the stories of the people she oft listened to, the people often others shun. Of course, we children had a Mom we could phone at any hour and she would answer and listen to us. Thanks Mom. A beautiful person to know and love. Always in our hearts.
Thanks also for watching. Amazed to see from around the world: NJ, Illinois, Indiana, CA, Colorado, PA, NV, NY, CT to Alaska (46 states); then France, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Mexico, El Salvador, Ghana, Nigeria, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Ireland, Oman, Australia, Malta, UK, Saudi Arabia , Israel, the Philippines and South Korea! thanks much!

England - Day 8: Breamore and Stonehenge
Today, while making our way to Stonehenge, we came by the village of Breamore and decided to visit it's Saxon church and Elizabethan stately home. Then, it was on to the henge, where it was a beautifully sunny day (note the shadows on the ground), but something weird is afoot, as the footage appears overcast. Is this ancient joo-joo at work from the dawn of modern civilization? What could we have done to anger the gods of 'henge?
St Mary The Virgin Church Prestwich, Manchester By Drone
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is on Church Lane, Prestwich, Greater Manchester, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Radcliffe and Prestwich, the archdeaconry of Bolton and the diocese of Manchester. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. Pevsner refers to it as a major church. The church is constructed in red sandstone with stone slate roofs. Its plan consists of a five-bay nave with a clerestory, a three-bay chancel with a clerestory rising higher than that of the nave, north and south aisles, north and south porches, and a west tower. The two eastern bays of the north aisle comprise the Wilton Chapel, the work of Paley and Austin in 1872. There is some doubt as to whether it is original Paley and Austin or a rebuild of something earlier. Of this chapel Pevsner writes the uncusped tracery is almost convincing Henry VIII but not quite. Beyond the Wilton Chapel are the organ chamber and the choir vestry. On the south of the church the Lever Chapel occupies a corresponding position to the Wilton Chapel, and to the east of this is the Birch (or Lady) Chapel. The tower is in three stages and rises to a height of 86 feet (26 m). It has a buttress at each corner, and a stair turret in the northeast corner. In the bottom stage is a doorway above which is a three-light window. In the middle stage on the west side is a two-light square-headed window. At a higher level in this stage are clock faces on the north, south and east sides. A reference in the churchwarden’s accounts notes that there was a clock in the tower in 1656.The top stage contains a three-light louvred bell opening on each side, and above them a string course with gargoyles. At the top of the tower is an embattled parapet, and it is surmounted by a pyramidal roof with a weathervane. Both aisles have two cusped, tracery-less, three-light windows and above them are three three-light square-headed, mullioned windows. At the west end of the north aisle is a Decorated two-light window, and at the west end of the south aisle the window has three lights. The clerestory has a range of two-light square-headed windows on each side. The Lever chapel has two four-light windows, and in the Wilton chapel are three three-light windows.[5] The east window of the chancel has seven lights and contains Perpendicular tracery. The south porch is dated 1756.

Places to see in ( Selkirk - UK )
Places to see in ( Selkirk - UK )
The Royal Burgh of Selkirk is a town in the Scottish Borders Council district of southeastern Scotland. It lies on the Ettrick Water, a tributary of the River Tweed. The people of the town are known as Souters, which means cobblers.
Selkirk was formerly the county town of Selkirkshire. Selkirk is one of the oldest Royal Burghs in Scotland and is the site of the earliest settlements in what is now the Scottish Borders. The town's name means church in the forest from the Old English sele (hall or manor) and cirice (church).
Selkirk is the site of the first Borders abbey; however the community of Tironensian monks moved to Kelso during the reign of King David I. In 1113, King David I granted Selkirk large amounts of land. William Wallace was declared guardian of Scotland in the town. Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Marquess of Montrose and the Outlaw Murray all had connections with the town.
Selkirk grew because of its woollen industry, although now that industry has ceased, leaving little in its wake. The town is best known for bannocks, a dry fruit cake. It has a museum and an art gallery. It was supposedly in the church at Selkirk, supported by nobles and clergy, that William Wallace was declared Guardian of the Kingdom of Scotland.
Selkirk men fought with Wallace at Stirling Brig and Falkirk, and also with Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, but it is Selkirk's connection with the Battle of Flodden in 1513. During the series of conflicts that would become known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, Selkirk played host the Royalist army of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose, with his cavalry installed in the burgh, whilst the Royalist infantry were camped at the plain of Philiphaugh, below the town.
The Selkirk Common Riding is a celebration of the history and traditions of the Royal and Ancient Burgh. Held on the second Friday after the first Monday in June, the ceremony is one of the oldest in the area, with 300-400 riders, Selkirk boasts one of the largest cavalcades of horses and riders in Europe.
The Standard Bearer is chosen from the eligible unmarried young men of the town who have applied for the post by the trustees of the Common Riding Trust, successors to the old Selkirk Town Council which disappeared in the local government reorganisation in 1975. The remains of the forest kirk, referred to in ancient times as the church of St Mary of the Forest, still stand in the old churchyard. William Wallace may have become Guardian of Scotland here, and it is also the final resting place of several relatives of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the USA. Roosevelt, whose ancestors came from the area, named his famous dog Fala, after Fala and the nearby village of Falahill. Just to the south of the town is The Haining, the late 18th-century residence of the Pringle family.
( Selkirk - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Selkirk . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Selkirk - UK
