“ALS Run From Augusta to Aiken”
By Samantha Williams Published : February 13, 2017, 6 :24 pm | Update : February 13, 2017, 6 :24 pm
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)– ALS looks different for every person. Dr. Michael Rivner said the disease affects skeletal muscles. “ALS is a fatal neuromuscular disease where basically you lose control of your muscles. It usually starts in one of the limbs, usually and arm or a leg or even a voice box, and get progressively worse. Usually most patients die within five years of the first symptom,” Dr. Rivner explained. Dr. Franklyn Beckles, Jr. and his son, Christian Beckles, ran from downtown Augusta, Georgia to Aiken Technical College in Aiken, South Carolina this morning in support of Rev. Franklyn Beckles, Sr. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2014 ! “My dad being a victim of ALS, I wanted not only to help him, but others in the community suffering from this tragic disease. There’s thousands of people each year that die from Lou-Gehrig’s disease,” Dr. Beckles Jr. said. Dr. Rivner said the most important thing about raising awareness is emphasizing the symptoms. “Part of the problem is there is no test that definitively diagnosis someone with ALS. Basically, it’s a matter of putting together the signs and symptoms and coming to that diagnosis. There’s lots of things we can do to symptomatically help these patients, but unfortunately, at this point, we don’t have a cure,” Dr. Rivner said. Augusta University partakes in research that develops treatments. They are working on finding a cure. “We want to make a difference, and we believe if men stand up in the community, it will make a difference,” Dr. Beckles Jr. concluded.

How Should Christians Respond to Islam? Understanding Islam (Part 2)
One of the greatest movements of our time is the growth of Islam around the world. Today, Islam is currently the second largest and fastest growing religion in the world. Islam claims to have 1.6 billion followers (1 out of every 5 people), or about 23% of the world's population.
In comparison, all of Christianity with all of its denomination, has about 1.8 billion followers. A United Nations report forecasts that Muslims will represent at least 1/2 of the global birthrate by the year 2055.
Although Islam was born in Arabia, today most Muslims are not of Arab descent.
Indonesia has 985 million Muslims or 87% of its total population.
Pakistan has 137 million Muslims or 97% of its total population.
The Middle East and North Africa have 316 million Muslims or 93% of its total population.
According to Muslim leaders, there are more than 6 million Muslims in the United States, a little less than half the size of our nation's largest protestant denomination, the Southern Baptist, which has 15 million followers.
An October 8, 1990 article in the US News and World Report stated that Islam is growing at a rate of 400% per year in the United States. Another report indicated that there were about 100,000 Muslims in the United States in 1970. In 2008 the report stated 9 million were in the United States. The first mosque in the United States was built in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1934 and is still in use. Today there are over 3,000 mosques in the United States with new ones being built each week.
Muhammad the founder of Islam is believed by Muslims to be the last and greatest prophet of God. He was a native of Mecca the site of a sacred shrine the Kabahi which was the center of idol worship in his day. It held 360 stone gods and a black stone (probably a meteorite) which is still regarded as a holy object by Muslims today. In his leisure he pursued his interest in religion. Each year he spent the month of Ramadan in a cave meditating.
Eventually, he became disgusted with the polytheism that had permeated his society and so attempted to rid Arabia of all idol worship. The Arabian tribes disliked this and as a result forced him to leave Mecca after preaching that he was God's final prophet who came to restore true monotheism.
He then fled to Median on July 16, 622 to establish his Muslim community. At first the people there welcomed him, but eventually they too turned against him. As a result Mohammed gathered and army and conquered the surrounding tribes and forced them to accept his religion at sword point.
From its inception Islam was an aggressive religion. This spirit of conquering and converting eventually led to the idea of Jihad or “Holy War” which was the primary means of the spread of Islam in its early years.
At the time of his death in 632 all of Arabia was under Mohammad's control and ruled by the teaching of Islam. In only 100 years, Islam had spread throughout northern Africa and the Middle East; eventually it conquered Spain, Turkey, India and also part of China.
The sermon goes on to cover the main beliefs of Islam. Several scriptural references of both the Qur’an and Bible are compared.
Muslims state that they believe in Jesus. He is mentioned in the Qur’an 35 times. However this is not the same Jesus that the Bible teaches.
I hope this sermon will help you better under the differences of the Bible and Quran.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Charleston is the oldest and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, the county seat of Charleston County, and the principal city in the Charleston–North Charleston–Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city lies just south of the geographical midpoint of South Carolina's coastline and is located on Charleston Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean formed by the confluence of the Ashley, Cooper, and Wando rivers. Charleston had an estimated population of 136,208 in 2018. The estimated population of the Charleston metropolitan area, comprising Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties, was 787,643 residents in 2018, the third-largest in the state and the 78th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States.
Charleston was founded in 1670 as Charles Town, honoring King Charles II of England. Its initial location at Albemarle Point on the west bank of the Ashley River (now Charles Towne Landing) was abandoned in 1680 for its present site, which became the fifth-largest city in North America within ten years. Despite its size, it remained unincorporated throughout the colonial period; its government was handled directly by a colonial legislature and a governor sent by London. Election districts were organized according to Anglican parishes, and some social services were managed by Anglican wardens and vestries. Charleston adopted its present spelling with its incorporation as a city in 1783 at the close of the Revolutionary War. Population growth in the interior of South Carolina influenced the removal of the state government to Columbia in 1788, but the port city remained among the ten largest cities in the United States through the 1840 census. Historians estimate that nearly half of all Africans brought to America arrived in Charleston, most at Gadsden's Wharf. The only major antebellum American city to have a majority-enslaved population, Charleston was controlled by an oligarchy of white planters and merchants who successfully forced the federal government to revise its 1828 and 1832 tariffs during the Nullification Crisis and launched the Civil War in 1861 by seizing the Arsenal, Castle Pinckney, and Fort Sumter from their federal garrisons.
Known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, distinguished restaurants, and hospitable people, Charleston is a popular tourist destination. ...
