If Walls Could Talk: how the shared-built Environment Affected the Families that lived within it
Lecture by Nadine Marchena Kean, economist, city planner and genealogist, St. Thomas, USVI.
Although there are thousands of examples Territory-wide, this paper focus on Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas specifically the historic neighborhood of Savanne. Savanne is traditionally thought to be a free colored neighborhood but it was a more of a cosmopolitan community where people with very different cultures came together. The study hopes to examine six multi-generational families that lived in three spaces over two centuries (1817 to present). Those living within the walls of these edifices may have come from different places with differing statuses in life but the study will illustrate that together because of their shared space and community, they developed a unique culture.
Histories from a Shared Past – A Transatlantic Lecture Series was held in June 2017 at the Danish National Archives in Copenhagen and was organized by the Danish West Indian Society and the Danish National Archives.
The Danish West-Indies: Sources of history
In 2017, it is 100 years ago, since Denmark transferred the three West Indian islands, St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John, to the USA. Denmark was a colonial power in the West-Indies for almost 250 years, and, quite uniquely, a huge number of historical documents have been preserved from that time.
To mark the centennial, the Danish National Archives has carried out a project to digitize all the letters, illustrations, descriptions and records, and make the documents available for everyone on a new website.
The project includes documents equivalent to approximately 1,200 linear meters of shelf space. Altogether there are about 5 million digital images.
Several of the documents are included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Therefore, it is a unique material – also seen from an international perspective.
The documents include fascinating stories about famous islanders and Danes, and horrific stories of a hard life with slavery, oppression and barbaric punishments. Together, they give a unique insight into the past for historians as well as for the societies of the US Virgin Islands and Denmark – and for the descendants, whose ancestors lived and died during the colonial period.
A donation from the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation for General Purposes made the project possible, and it was carried out in collaboration with the Danish Ministry of Culture.

Grand Duchy Of Hesse
The '''Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine''' ( In German: Großherzogtum Hessen und bei Rhein. ) , or the '''Grand Duchy of Hesse''' ( In German: Großherzogtum Hessen. ) between 1806 and 1816, was an independent country and member state of the Confederation of the Rhine as of 1806, when the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt was elevated to a Grand Duchy which it remained until 1918, when the monarchy was overthrown. Hesse lost its independence when it joined the German Empire in 1871. Before 1866, its northern neighbour was its former sister Landgraviate, since 1803 an Electorate, of Hesse-Kassel – for this reason, this state was sometimes colloquially known as '''Hesse-Darmstadt'''.

★ Camille Pissarro Great Art Collection ★
Camille Pissarro Collection Movie by P. Gaillard - Star Arts Productions
Camille Pissarro (10 July 1830 – 13 November 1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St. Thomas (now in the US Virgin Islands, but then in the Danish West Indies). His importance resides in his contributions to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Pissarro studied from great forerunners, including Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He later studied and worked alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac when he took on the Neo-Impressionist style at the age of 54.
In 1873 he helped establish a collective society of fifteen aspiring artists, becoming the pivotal figure in holding the group together and encouraging the other members. Art historian John Rewald called Pissarro the dean of the Impressionist painters, not only because he was the oldest of the group, but also by virtue of his wisdom and his balanced, kind, and warmhearted personality. Paul Cézanne said he was a father for me. A man to consult and a little like the good Lord, and he was also one of Gauguin's masters. Renoir referred to his work as revolutionary, through his artistic portrayals of the common man, as Pissarro insisted on painting individuals in natural settings without artifice or grandeur.
Pissarro is the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886. He acted as a father figure not only to the Impressionists but to all four of the major Post-Impressionists, including Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.

British Virgin Islands
The Virgin Islands, commonly known as the British Virgin Islands (BVI), is a British overseas territory located in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico. The islands make up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago; the remaining islands constitute the US Virgin Islands and the Spanish Virgin Islands.
The official name of the Territory is still simply the Virgin Islands, but the prefix British is often used to distinguish it from the neighbouring American territory which changed its name from the Danish West Indies to Virgin Islands of the United States in 1917. British Virgin Islands government publications continue to begin with the name The Territory of the Virgin Islands, and the Territory's passports simply refer to the Virgin Islands, and all laws begin with the words Virgin Islands. Moreover, the Territory's Constitutional Commission has expressed the view that every effort should be made, to encourage the use of the name Virgin Islands.

SUMMARY
=======
Danish overseas colonies and pre Dano-Norwegian colonies (Norwegian: Danmark-Norges kolonier) denotes the colonies that Denmark-Norway (Denmark alone after 1814) possessed from 1536 until 1953. At its apex the colonies spanned four continents (Europe, North America, Africa and Asia). The period of colonial expansion marked a rise in the status and power of Danes and Norwegians in the union. Being the hegemon of Denmark-Norway or the Statsfædrelandet (lit. State Fatherland), Denmark is where the union's monumental palaces are now located and Copenhagen, today the capital of Denmark, was the city which both Norway and Denmark came to establish as their capital. Much of the Norwegian population moved to find work in Copenhagen, attend the University, or join the Royal Fleet.
In the 17th century, following territorial losses on the Scandinavian Peninsula, Denmark-Norway began to develop colonies, forts, and trading posts in West Africa, the Caribbean, and the Indian subcontinent. After 1814, when Norway was ceded to Sweden following the Napoleonic Wars, Denmark retained what remained of Norway's great medieval colonial holdings. Christian IV first initiated the policy of expanding Denmark-Norway's overseas trade, as part of the mercantilist wave that was sweeping Europe. Denmark-Norway's first colony was established at Tranquebar (Trankebar) on India's southern coast in 1620. Admiral Ove Gjedde led the expedition that established the colony.
Today, the only remaining vestiges are two originally Norwegian colonies that are currently within the Danish Realm, the Faroe Islands and Greenland; the Faroes were a Danish county until 1948, while Greenland's colonial status ceased in 1953. They are now autonomous countries of the Kingdom of Denmark with home rule, in a relationship referred to as the Unity of the Realm.
