UK: LONDON: STAR TREK EXHIBITION
English/Nat
Fans of the cult Science Fiction series, Star Trek, transported themselves to the Science Museum in London today (Thursday) in the hope of being picked to take part in Star Trek - The Exhibition.
Twenty people will be chosen to act as guides round the exhibits, starting in October.
Few television programs have inspired such a loyal and devoted following as Star Trek.
As a result competition for the coveted positions as guides in the London Science Museum's latest exhibition is intense.
Fans from all over the U-K donned their outfits, charged their phasers and made their way to the auditions held today.
SOUNDBITE:
Each and every story from all of the series has a meaning and if you look for it you can find it. I've found that it's helped me through a lot of situations in my own life.
SUPER CAPTION: Andrew Pierson, Star Trek fan
The exhibition hopes to combine the fiction in the series with fact, illustrating the forward-looking nature of the programme and the influence it has had on the modern world.
For instance, few people know that the precursors of the portable 'phone can be found in early episodes of Star Trek.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Well I've always been interested in science and the chance to work within Star Trek would be, frankly, amazing.
SUPER CAPTION: Mark Constantine, Star Trek fan
For some, Star Trek is more than just a collection of intergalactic battles, it is a way of life.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Well I started watching it and it just grew on you. I just got addicted to it.
SUPER CAPTION: Claudia Ventrella, Star Trek fan
The successful applicants are to be chosen not only for their love of the programme.
They also need a basic understanding of pseudo-scientific knowledge so they can explain what is involved in warp drive (faster than light) and how exactly dilithium crystals (which power the Starship Enterprise) may be formed.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We're looking for somebody who's got an appreciation of science to start with, but more importantly who likes Star Trek and who is good with the public, good at teaching the public about what the things they're going to see in the exhibition and who can keep them entertained and informed.
SUPER CAPTION: Jo Leslie, Press Officer for Science Museum
The ability to perform Klingon war rituals would be a bonus but ultimately not necessary for the post.
It is life, but not as most of us know it.
