Spirit of Korea _ Yi Sun-shin(이순신)
[ Yi Sun-shin – A global hero who brought about a miraculous victory ]
Yi Sun-shin is the hero of the Battle of Hansando Island, one of the 4 greatest naval battles in history. Admiral Yi Sun-shin, the first admiral in Asia to carry on a modern fleet warfare utilizing combat ships carrying loads of artillery, accomplished a surprising record of 23 battles and 23 victories during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. He was a loyal vassal, who had been faithful to his king to the end. Even his pen name was ‘ilshim,’ meaning ‘one heart.’ He always did his best in all that he did, adhered to principles, was on guard against becoming conceited and always lived by the motto that ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,’ even before and after the war. As such, when the Japanese Invasion of 1592 occurred a year after he was appointed as the Naval Commander of EastJeolla-doProvince, he was able to win battle after battle beginning with the Battle of Okpo. The Battle of Myeongnyang, in which he brought about a miraculous victory, defeating a fleet of 133 ships with only 13 vessels, was a clear example of his enduring loyalty to his king and his country. Let’s explore the life of the great admiral Yi Sun-shin who is still admired by many even today.
