Claudia Jaguaribe: Fotografias at Stiftung Brasilea, Basel
Until 3 March, the Brasilea Foundation in Basel (Switzerland) presents works by the Brazilian artist Claudia Jaguaribe. Jaguaribe’s work deals with the influences of the urban metropolises on the rural environment. She uses photographic techniques, video installations and documentary work. Her exhibition in Basel is spread over three floors of the Brasilea Foundation. On the basement level she installed a large mural that shows pure nature with covered areas that represent deforestation. On the raised ground floor the focus is on the urbanity of the city of Rio de Janeiro under the aspect of the relationship between urban space and nature (series Entre Morros and Topografias). The series Homenagem a Hélio shows material from the favelas that were transformed into sculptures. Cactoceae is a series of photos of cacti that serve as a critique of global warming and the result from the desertification of brazilian landscape. On the first floor the series Bibliotecas presents photographies of book spines that are covered by images of forests and serve as an allusion to the memory of the preservable forest.
Claudia Jaguaribe was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1955. She studied History of Arts at the Boston University, USA. The artist lives and works in Sao Paulo.
Claudia Jaguaribe: Fotografias. Solo exhibition at Stiftung Brasilea, Basel (Switzerland). Vernissage, January 21, 2016.

Armarinhos Teixeira: Morfología Oblíqua / Brasilea Foundation, Basel
The current exhibition at Brasilea Foundation in Basel (Switzerland) features the Brazilian artist Armarinhos Teixeira, who was born and raised in São Paulo. Teixeira’s art is rooted and characterized by this huge metropolis. For his works, Armarinhos Teixeira uses raw materials from industrial production, such as nylon, leather cords, steel cords and polyester. His artworks hang, hover, lie, flow across borders and adapt in shape and size to the given space. Armarinhos Teixeira creates his works in the context of the location. For his exhibition at Brasilea Foundation, the artist processed a ton of material, a carrier of nylon cord from tire production, to about 20 art works on site. The exhibition is titled Morfología Oblíqua and runs until November 10, 2016. A trilingual catalog will be published in German, English and Portuguese for this exhibition.
Armarinhos Teixeira: Morfología Oblíqua / Brasilea Foundation, Basel (Switzerland). Vernissage, September 22, 2016.

Christina Oiticica: Quatro Elementos / Brasilea Foundation, Basel
Christina Oiticica is known for her eco art works. Canvases painted with acrylic paints find their completion not until they have been exposed to nature and its elements. Most of the works remain left to natural forces for a specific while, often dug in and dug out by the artist herself with bare hands. The result is always a surprise. Christina Oiticica's current exhibition at Brasilea Foundation in Basel (Switzerland) for the first time features all four elements, earth, water, air and fire, thus the title of the show, Quatro Elementos. The exhibition includes several works specifically designed for the exhibition in Basel. In this video we attend the opening reception and Christina Oiticica and Daniel Faust (Director, Brasilea Foundation), provide us with a short introduction to the show.
Christina Oiticica: Quatro Elementos / Brasilea Foundation, Basel. Vernissage, January 26, 2017.
Excerpt from the info text:
Her “Four Elements” work cycle includes several works specifically designed for the exhibition in Basel. The artworks are prepared in advance before they are completed on site. Seven of her works are installed on the roof terrace of the building and exposed to winter weather, three in water basins and four in the fresh air. Three more are buried in the ground of the raised ground floor of the exhibition rooms. The fourth element fire comes in at the Vernissage on 26 January 2017. Then the works, before being handed over to nature for completion, are finished with the help of fire in the Brasilea. Visitors to the exhibition can experience the entire process on site and are, of course, invited to participate in the Finissage when the finished works are taken back from nature again. Vernissage and Finissage are open to the public.
Furthermore, more than 40 works, which have been produced since 2004, including 25 of the “Primavera” series from Spain (2008), from the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela are shown in the Brasilea. In the same way, Paulo Coelho’s work “The pilgrimage. Along the road to Santiago de Compostela” was created in 2007. Three works from the Amazon are also part of the exhibition.

Cybèle Varela: Tropicalismo Remixed / Brasilea Foundation Basel
The exhibition Cybèle Varela: Tropicalismo Remixed is the first retrospective in Europe to be devoted to Brazilian artist Cybèle Varela (b. 1943, Petrópolis). Cybèle Varela is one of the key figures of the Brazilian Pop Art and Tropicalismo movements.

Cybèle Varela: Tropicalismo Remixed presents a selection of the artist’s most emblematic paintings, objects and videos from the 1960s to the present day. By shedding new light on the artist’s many achievements, it investigates Varela’s contribution to both Latin American and international artistic discourses, from Pop and Conceptual Art to Narrative Figuration and Video Art.

Arjan Martins: O Estrangeiro / Brasilea Foundation, Basel
In this video, we are attending the opening reception of Arjan Marins’ solo exhibition O Estrangeiro (The Foreigner) at Brasilea Foundation in Basel, Switzerland. Running concurrently with Art Basel, the exhibition features new works, which the artist has created during his residency at Brasilea Foundation in Basel. Coming soon: Interview with Arjan Martins.
Arjan Martins: O Estrangeiro / Brasilea Foundation, Basel (Switzerland). Vernissage, May 12, 2017.
Info text:
From 12 May to 18 June 2017, the Brasilea Foundation shows contemporary Afro-Brazilian paintings by Arjan Martins. Arjan Martins, who is one of the most interesting representatives of contemporary Brazilian art, works through his origins by doing historical basic research, intensively examines the ever-present theme of migration of peoples and the colonial period, and depicts cartographic material that documents and illustrates the trade and shipment of slaves.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1960, he still lives and works there. His work is characterized by the question of ethnic identity. He uses historical photos depicting people in everyday situations and dealing with migration. Arjan Martins translates the overarching question to a variety of surfaces: thrown away pieces of wood, paper, walls, floors, the city as such, etc. He sketches quiet silhouettes as well as exact borders, uses whitewash or lets his realizations explode painterly.
In Arjan Martin’s works, the viewer feels the drive and tensions of his inner universe. “I try to transform voices and sounds from history books, written and spoken records, as well as quotations into imaginary portraits.” Arjan Martins questions the superficial humanity on earth and returns it to its origins by introducing the transience of used objects as a presentation platform. He tries to penetrate the non-organic essence of things. For this he finds expression in incredibly strong colors and compositions, with always recurring motifs. The superior subject of migration is presented by sextants, ship hulls and globes. On the other hand, always returning, the little black girl with her hand forming a fist in front of her face. At first in a green dress, then again schematically, young, pre-pubertarian, innocent. Then older, darker, sad, shocked. The girl, the young Afro-migrant, has been accompanying Arjan Martins for many years; She represents an emotional level in his works. Her origin can be traced back to a photograph from the 1950s, depicted on a record cover by Oscar Peterson – Girl Talk (from photographer Josef Werkmeister), published in 1968. Today, she would be in her eighties, given that she is still alive. Always recurring is also the motif of the three-year-old Aylan Kurdi, who floated to shore in Turkey near Bodrum in 2015 as he was fleeing with his family from the war in Syria. A picture that shocked the world, a symbol of the tragedy of the current international migration.
For the exhibition in the Brasilea Foundation, Arjan Martins is creating around 25 works on wood and canvas in his temporary studio, which he has installed on site. He will spent three months working at the exhibition in Basel which itself will change over time. The studio is an integral part of the exhibition and can be viewed during the opening hours. In this way, Arjan Martins provides the visitors with an insight into the development process of his works.

Visiting BASEL 1 | A secret hidden gem in BASEL: the Lallekonig | top attractions in SWITZERLAND
Basel or Basle, French: Bâle; Italian: Basilea; Romansh: Basilea, is a city in northwestern Switzerland on the river Rhine. Basel is Switzerland's third-most-populous city (after Zürich and Geneva) with about 180,000 inhabitants.
Located where the Swiss, French and German borders meet, Basel also has suburbs in France and Germany. As of 2016, the Swiss Basel agglomeration was the third-largest in Switzerland, with a population of 541,000 in 74 municipalities in Switzerland (municipal count as of 2018). The initiative Trinational Eurodistrict Basel (TEB) of 62 suburban communes including municipalities in neighboring countries, counted 829,000 inhabitants in 2007.
The official language of Basel is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken language is the local Basel German dialect.
The city is known for its many internationally renowned museums, ranging from the Kunstmuseum, the first collection of art accessible to the public in Europe (1661) and the largest museum of art in the whole of Switzerland, to the Fondation Beyeler (located in Riehen). The University of Basel, Switzerland's oldest university (founded in 1460), and the city's centuries-long commitment to humanism, have made Basel a safe haven at times of political unrest in other parts of Europe for such notable people as Erasmus of Rotterdam, the Holbein family, Friedrich Nietzsche and in the 20th century also Hermann Hesse and Karl Jaspers.
The Lällekönig or Lällenkönig is a larger than long head of painted copper sheet with a crown. The original was attached to the Basel Rhine Gate near the Middle Bridge , thus sticking its tongue out to the newcomers. He had a mechanism that made him roll his eyes four times a minute and stick his tongue out, which gave him his name: Lälli is a Basle-German word for tongue. The mechanism was originally powered by the work of the tower clock, later the king got his own drive. Over time, the Lällekönig was something of a Stadtwahrzeichen.

Swantje Hielscher at Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland
The current exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel, “Rooms Look Back”, (until November 16, 2008) brings together three international artists (Rosa Barba, Ursula Mayer, Margaret Salmon) who are concerned with the presentation of different concepts of space in the medium of film. Under the title “Insert”, three other artists (Manuela Leinhoss, Swantje Hielscher, and Davide Cascio) take positions on the exhibition using other media.
This video documents the opening reception of Insert II: Swantje Hielscher. German artist Swantje Hielscher was born in 1980, she lives and works in Berlin. For Insert II she shows works on paper and objects. On display are the works Window I, Window IV, Quest/Alphabet, and Still. For hall 3 of Kunsthalle Basel she created a site-specific work. She measured the room with the aid of a paper in format DIN A 4, starting at the left hand corner moving her way across the walls vertically. The number of A 4 papers she used are turned into an object: a display case in the form of the floor plan of the space.
Rooms Look Back is curated by Simone Neuenschwander, the Inserts are co-curated by Annette Amberg.
