Chile protests: Clashes in Santiago as unrest continues - BBC News
Five people died after looters torched a garment factory near Chile's capital Santiago, bringing the death toll in violent protests to at least eight.
The military and police used tear gas and water cannon against protesters and a curfew was imposed in major cities.
A state of emergency already in place in Santiago is to be extended to cities in the country's north and south.
The unrest, sparked by a now suspended metro fare hike, has widened to reflect anger over living costs and inequality.
There is set to be major disruption on Monday with many banks, schools and shops expected to remain closed.

CHILE: COUNTRY EMERGING FROM RECESSION
Spanish/Nat
Considered one of Latin America's most favoured economies, Chile is slowly emerging from its worst recession in 16 years.
It's role as one of the region's first pioneers of free trade won respect worldwide before Asia's stock market crashed with disastrous side effects.
But despite Chile's progress and the capital Santiago's modern sophistication, the blight of hardship and poverty typical of much of Latin America persists.
Chile is about to elect a new president for the new millennium.
But there is little that is new about Chile's poverty despite the country's former reputation as Latin America's own tiger economy.
This is Pealolen, a shanty town on the outskirts of the capital Santiago de Chile.
The privately owned land was commandeered in July by families desperate for somewhere to live.
Their so-called 'Toma' - which in English means take-over - has given them security and what was once a tent city is rapidly taking root.
Similar protests occur across Latin America and Chile proves no exception despite its modern, European
outlook.
Those who live here live on 65 U-S dollars a day, sometimes less.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
Here in Chile when you're talking about the economic system only the powerful have money. The poor has no
right to its own money. that's it put simply. The right belongs to the capitalists and major investors of Latin America only. This is the reality of Latin America. This is the truth of the poor. There are more poor than rich but every day the poorer get poorer and the richer get richer in this country. That is the truth of the matter.
SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop, German Henriquez
On Sunday millions of Chileans will vote for a new president but few here in Pealolen have much faith in either of the two leading candidates.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
We don't have water in all the homes here. We don't have our own toilets. Just portaloos. But the people are here because they have their own space. and they are fighting for something that they know will give them a more dignified future. This is a long struggle. We all know that it is not a fight fought in just three or four months. It is a fight that will require all our strength but what we are doing makes it well worthwhile.
SUPER CAPTION: Victor Tellier, community leader
Poverty has driven thousands to take part in these so-called take overs despite the modern face of Chile.
Under General Augusto Pinochet and the civilian rule which followed through the late eighties and early
nineties, Chile pioneered liberal, free market policies with huge success.
Growth averaged seven per cent annually until turmoil recently hit the Asian markets.
The worst recession in 20 years followed and millions have been adversely affected.
The wealthy are opting to invest more of their money out of Chile, prompting many leading foreign investors
to shave their own planned investments here for next year.
Santander Investment, a subsidiary of Banco Santander, is one of the leading investors in Chile.
But head of research Heinrich Lessau says the situation is not as critical as it was in 1982.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
The truth is that the crisis we had in 1982-83, the debt crisis together with the collapse of the domestic financial system was much worse in terms of unemployment which ran to above 30 per cent. When in reality in this recession we have not gone above 12 per cent. We are talking about a more moderate recession. But also the difference on this occasion is that the regulators, particularly financial regulators in Chile, were much more advanced. We are talking about a country which had an economic structure far better than that which Chile had in 19820.

Description
Global Lithium Podcast E48: Ali Dai in Santiago
In the final episode recorded from Santiago, Chile, at the Fastmarkets Lithium Conference, Joe and Emily sit down with Alison Dai, director of Chengdu Chemphys. While Chemphys may be unknown to many who follow the lithium industry due to it’s deep specialization in high purity products, Joe introduces the company as a strong Chinese competitor to FMC.
Alison shares her multicultural heritage, and tells the podcast’s hosts about her life growing up in Australia, beginning her career in investment banking, and then taking the decision to return to China and join the family business in 2015, including getting her Mandarin Chinese up to scratch. She and Joe illuminate Emily as to the meaning of “high purity” lithium, and who needs to buy it.Spoiler alert: It’s electrolyte makers! High purity lithium is called four 9’s or five 9’s, referring to the 99.99% or 99.999% purity that some applications require.
Alison the explains why in the mid 90s’ Chemphys decided rather than to enter the crowded technical grade industrial lithium market in China, that their niche would be high purity products. In today’s battery-driven world, Joe identifies the growing need for higher purity materials and the increasing applications for Chemphys processes allowing new ways to leverage processing expertise especially in the brine space.
Following on from E44 with Chloe Holzinger from Lux Research about innovation in the lithium space and the role of China, the three discuss the heterogeneity of China and how the Chinese culture of innovation favors the commercial scale of new technology applications by allowing companies to come online more quickly and adjust during commission vs. the more western “plan and pilot” model. On the China theme, Alison explains how access to financing from banks and government funds in China differs for state companies, big companies, and the smaller players.
The episode is rounded out with the usual rapid fire section, in which Alison teaches Joe and Emily to say prang in the Sichuan dialect and Mandarin, Joe and Alison bond over a shared love of athleisure wear, and Emily uses China as an excuse for being bad at Twitter.
