Exploring SOUTH AFRICA 2017 | Cape Town, Durban, Drakensberg, Sun City + more!
We spent 5 weeks exploring beautiful South Africa, visiting many beaches, hiking and seeing some of the most breathtaking sights in Drakensberg and Table Mountain of Cape Town, spending quality time with family, and much more.
After starting in Sun City for a week, we flew back to Durban, from where we drove down to where we would be staying for the next two weeks, Mtwalume. In the middle of our stay in Mtwalume, we drove to the amazing Drakensberg mountain range where we went on many amazing hikes. After our short stay there, we returned to Mtwalume where we continued our ventures out to nearby destinations and also spent time with family over the Christmas period. After Mtwalume, it was time to take on the Garden Route (N2), a very scenic drive all the way down to Cape Town. Our night stops on the way to Cape Town included East London, Port Elizabeth, Knysna and Somerset West before arriving in Cape Town on New Years Eve. Easily the highlight of the popular bustling Cape Town was the breathtaking 4.5 hour hike up to the top of Table Mountain via the Skeleton Gorge trail.
Being vegan in South Africa was relatively easy given that most of the time there we were in a rental unit with a kitchen. Eating out was sometimes challenging, however in Cape Town this was not a problem :)

Durban Educational Tour
Esayedi College came down to Durban for a 2 days and 1 night History and Culture educational tour of Durban. This short video illustrates some of the places we took them to. Each educational tour we develop is tailored to the groups needs. In this instance the group had some students who could only speak Zulu, therefore we ensured all our guides could engage them in both English and Zulu. i_am_thalente
tal·ent [tal-uhnt] - noun
1.a special natural ability or aptitude:
2.a capacity for achievement or success; ability: young men of talent.
Aptly named seventeen-year old Thalente Biyela which means Talent in Zulu is a homeless kid who aimlessly roamed downtown Durban until he was given his first skateboard by local skate store owner Dallas Oberholtzer in 2002.
Since then, he has become one of the most promising young skaters in his area. His deep trick bag makes Thalente one to watch at any session, be it at the concrete park - where he sometimes sleeps - or on urban terrain.
His charisma and charm have a way of drawing people towards him. He has spent the last four years on the streets hustling his way around the South African skate scene whilst trying to make a name for himself. He is motivated to use his skating talent as a tool to get him off the streets and make a career for himself. Skating is literally his life and he puts his heart and soul in the sport.
The future challenges facing Thalente are huge as he begins the journey from street kid to adult, fostering the dream of becoming one of the first black kids from South Africa to earn a living from skating.

RWC Trophy tour | Update on the Boks' arrival in East London
Earlier today we saw scenes of jubilation in Durban's streets, thousands thrilled as the Boks paraded the Webb Ellis Cup.
This follows similar scenes in Pretoria and Johannesburg including Soweto yesterday. We've had our SABC colleagues track all those celebrations.
Now, the victory tour has landed in East London and reporter Iviwe Poti has that leg covered.

uShaka Beach Durban South Africa
uShaka Beach is the main beach in Durban South Africa. We spent a lot of time here since there is tons to do at the beach. There's a huge water park on the boardwalk, if you're going with family I would recommend. My favorite part about this place are the variety of food and shopping options.
Food and Shopping
There is an indoor mall with lots of shops, restaurants and even fast food. Whatever you taste or price range you can find it here. There also a nice restaurant/bar on the pier which is a great place to grab some drinks and soak in the great panoramic view. One of our favorite restaurant that we came back to several time during our 10 days is Surf Riders cafe. This place had some amazing burgers, pizza, decent price drinks and good vibes. I will warn you it get pretty busy during lunch and dinner times. The shops on the mall were surprisingly cheap at least cheaper then I expected for a store on the beach. There's also an open air style market where street vendors sell you souvenirs, colorful African dresses, sandals, and African art. This was actually our favorite place to shop, we bought handful of colorful dresses and souvenirs for me and some folks back home.
Carriage Rides
On one of our trips to uShaka we decided to get a carriage ride from one end of the beach to the other. It was fun experience until the end of the ride the guy tried to charge us a $1000 USD. Of course my response was Are you fucking kidding me?! he wasn't but we refused to pay that much and he kept reducing until we felt like it was fair enough. I don't even remember how much we paid but I can't say it was worth it for that short ride. Make sure you check the price at the beginning of the ride, if not they will profile you to see how much you look like you can afford. They saw an expensive camera and thought they can cheat us.
Cello by the Beach
As you know by now my husband Klaccik Carpenta is a celliest and music producer. He took his cello to South Africa to perform at several places and one of those was on the beach during sunset. There were some kids gathered and he got a chance to let the kids touch and play the cello since they've never see anything like it before. He gave a quick performance for the kids, couples and random people enjoying the sunset on the beach.
Overall uShaka beach was on of our favorite hangout area during our time in Durban. There was a lot to do for tourist in one area. The locals have another area in the city on Davenport Rd road with a bunch of bar and night clubs on the same strip. We bar hoped in this area with some locals, Amsterdam bar seems to be popular by the local we were hanging out with. It has a outdoor area in the back with cool vibes. Cool Vibes this word was used a lot in Durban and I think it's the best word to some up this city. Other South African cities have different vibes I often heard Johannesburg is like NYC and Cape Town also has it's own feel but Durban is defiantly that California style laid back take it easy kind of place.
