The Castle Hotel, Bishops Castle
The Castle Hotel is located in a quiet square in the small market town of Bishops Castle, midway between Shrewsbury and Ludlow. In the heart of the Shropshire Hills there is much to explore, both in Shropshire and neighbouring Wales. It is surrounded by great walking country including Offa's Dyke and The Long Mynd. The eight en-suite bedrooms are individually furnished, some with lovely views of the town, hills or garden. There is a choice of eating venues, each with its own character and all serving food that is flavoursome and fresh. The hotel gardens provide a great vantage point to view the surrounding hills, preferably with a glass of something inebriating in hand and the promise of dinner in the air. Bishops Castle is a fine little town, with a strong arts and crafts tradition and plenty of antique shops and tea rooms to loiter in.
Landscape Today Ep. 7 Pt. 1 Wessels' Farm Tour
Starting seeds are easy. Especially when you have an operation like Wessels' Farm. We recently took a tour and got a great behind the scenes look at where most of your favorite garden center plants come from. This is a multi part episode as the complete tour was well over 90 minutes.
Threshing Day
Acton Scott Working Farm Museum held its annual threshing day on 27 October 2007. This film shows 'farm workers' on the top of a hay cart forking sheaves of corn onto a Marshall Threshing Box. This threshing box was built by Marshall & Sons Ltd of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England in 1941. It was one of a batch of 1000 ordered by the War Agriculture Committee and was restored at Acton Scott during 1987/88.
The machine separates grain from chaff and straw. It is powered by a flat-belt drive from a Fowler steam engine hired for the purpose. Such engines were a common sight in England in the 1940's and early 1950's, one of the more common applications being their use as road rollers.
