The 7 Colors of Bacalar Lagoon, Mexico (24)
Bacalar - Getting there
By car: Bacalar is right off highway 307 in the southern part of the state of Quintana Roo. It's also 34 km/21 miles north of the Belize border. Before heading out make sure you have a full tank of gas because the gas stations on the highway are very few and far between. From Playa del Carmen it took us three hours on highway 307. Be sure to jump on the cuota toll highway for 24 pesos. From the highway follow the signs to Bacalar lagoon.
By bus: The ADO leaves for Bacalar multiple times per day. Prices range from 145 pesos to 322 pesos/person. Check out the prices and schedule here:
Bacalar - Touring the Lagoon
Bacalar is a small town that is easily navigated. If you head toward the waterfront you will find tour operators selling lagoon tours. Depending on the season and the tour operator prices will range greatly. The standard cost for a boat tour is around 250 pesos per person and you will be lumped together like sardines with a bunch of other tourists. For a private tour we negotiated a rate of 600 pesos for the both of us. We had spoken to one operator that wanted to charge us 1200 pesos. We said no thanks, and moved on to the next one. We then negotiated him down from 800 pesos. The benefit of a private tour is that your guide will cater to your needs and you will have the boat to yourselves. The tour took two hours but it felt like it flew by. Keep in mind that there are no bathrooms on the boats, and you will need to visit the restroom before leaving. Joel was such an outstanding guide that we tipped him 75 pesos.
Once we were done with the tour we made our way to Cocolito's Café to visit the stromatolites. It cost 50 pesos (for both of us) to swim with the stomatolites. They are after all, the main attraction….lol. We also stopped at the café and ordered the guacamole and a Corona. The guacamole was amazing: fresh and delicious. It cost 40 pesos and the Corona was about 25 pesos.
Stromatolites
Bacalar Lagoon has an extensive formation of giant living fossils called stromatolites. They may possibly be the largest sized living freshwater stromatolites.
Stromatolites are mound-like structures produced by photosynthetic bacteria. The bacteria formed colonies and the combining of their carbonate deposits with sediment created these mounds. Photosynthetic bacteria had an important part in Earth's evolution. Early years on earth would have been too hot to support life as we know it. Through the bacteria's photosynthesis, the atmosphere was transformed over hundreds of millions of years. They were responsible for creating oxygen, cutting out severe solar radiation, and paving the way for more complex life forms. Stromatolites are amazingly rare and are the oldest living fossils on earth today. They are also helping scientists gauge the age of the planet.
The juxtaposition with Cocolito's Café is pretty humorous. Although we feel that these incredible living mounds should be protected, we were giddy about getting up close to them. I mean, what are the chances of us getting this close to stromatolites again? There are only a few others in the world. It was too exciting an opportunity to pass up. Mother earth, we were careful. We promise.

Bacalar? All the things you can see on a tour with the boat [SUBS EN,ES,DE,PL]
Bacalar was added to the list of Magic Towns of Mexico in 2006.
It is a small town, now getting bigger and bigger, but I wouldn't say its a city yet:) But... apparently they are going to open a Chedraui Supermarket soon, so that seems like a big change! Actually, Bacalar is undergoing many changes, due to a constant influx of tourists and people who chose to retire on this peace of paradise.
I dare to state, that this is caused not that much by the Fortification of San Felipe or the 2nd oldest church in Mexico, but by the color of the lagoon - which is called the lagoon of 7 colors, since it represents 7 different shades of blue, depending on the depth, of the kind of bottom, of the sediment etc etc. Bacalar develops because of the tourism industry, and this is one of the reasons, why its starting to face a difficult stage - the lagoon is actually in danger of becoming just one color lagoon.... The infrastructure doesn't cope with so much recent development.
In the lagoon of Bacalar, as one of the few places in the world, you can find the stromatolites, which are the formations of cyanobacteria, which are still alive! These bacteria are for now known as the Earth’s earliest signs of life on Earth, so that's a big wow! The loking-like-rock structures have been formed over millions of years!!.
They are very important to the ecosystem of the lagoon, they do what the reefs in the see do, as well as produce oxygen! (actually, to this kind of bacteria millions of years ago, humans could start existing - as they produced oxygen!), and they are fragile. The thing is, not many people know about them, and not many tours and guides go in depth about this super important element of the ecosystem, so people sit on them, and like that, kill them:(
The deterioration of the stromatolites is a significant threat to the environmental health of the lagoon. So if you want to see the lagoon of 7 colors with its all 7 colors of blue and not just one color of grey... please do not apply chemical sunscreen if you enter the water, use a long sleeve vest or cover yourself up - when you are on the boat. And don't sit on the structures (especially in the Rapids), that look like rocks... you are killing something, that makes the lagoon of Bacalar so clear, and might give us the answer of how we actually came into existence (imagine how much information is hidden in those stromatolites).
Using the sand to make a peeling? No problem! Just again - don't use sunscreen, as it would all end up in the water. And please don't take any of that sand with you. Anyway, it will not have the same effect when you are at home, and you are unbalancing the ecosystem of the lagoon.
A good tip here: the more slimy and smelly the sand is, the better - this one actually contains sulfur compounds that you are looking for:) these chemical reaction, together with mechanical peeling will leave your skin smooth:)
In the lagoon there are the boat tours available, with the engine, as well as with the sail. The cost of the former is 200 Mexican pesos, which is approximately 10USD and the tour takes around 2 hours. They will take you to the Cenote Negro (which you can see in the video), the Pirates' Channel and show you around also the big villas that have a direct access to the lagoon (and that is why you cannot walk along the coast of the lagoon).
The sailing tour is normally a bit longer - 4 to 5 hours and costs approximately 500 Mexican pesos, which is 25USD.
Those are the basic costs - lets say the cheapest But of course there are different levels - if you want a better boat, if you want to have an informed guide, then the prices goes up:)
Another, very recommendable option is to rent a kayak and just have a trip by yourself. They only thing is - watch out for the wind, since - depending on the kayak or canoe you rent, it might be difficult to steer it, or you might even capsize - just like I did! You will able to see it in the next episode. Also, in the next episode, I will show you the Bacalar town, with its center and the fortification, as well as I will share with you my favorite restaurant place!
So, stay informed and take care of the environment. After all, we have just one Earth, that we all share:)

LAGUNA BACALAR. Lake of Seven Colors in Mexico.
We spend a day in one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen, Laguna Bacalar in Quintana Roo, Mexico! Bacalar is located in the south of Mexico, close to Belize. Bacalar is relatively small and we spend the day biking around the town. We visit a hotel on the Lake called Hotel Aluxes to have lunch and spend some time on their beautiful lake front. We fly our DJI Spark over the Lake of Seven Colors to check out the view from above. We then return to town via our bikes to have some coffee and beer and then do a short tour of our hotel, Toto Blue.

Places featured in the video:
Laguna de Bacalar is also known as the “Lake of Seven Colors” or “Lagoon of Seven Colors,” and for good reason.
The crystal clear waters and white sandy bottom of the lake cause the water color to morph into varying shades of turquoise, blue, and deep indigo throughout the day and in different depths.
This 60-kilometer lagoon (which is often called a lake, but is actually a series of waterways eventually leading to the ocean) once offered passage for pirates and traders seeking their treasure in the form of precious Campeche wood.
These days, the lagoon is more likely to see sunbathers and kayakers. It contains several sizable cenotes — excellent swimming holes — as well as stromatolites, the world’s oldest known fossils. Still, despite its location only four hours south of Cancun, tourists remain sparse.
The Fort of San Felipe was built in 1733 under the order of don Antonio de Figueroa y Silva, field marshal of Yucatan, to protect the Bacalar population from the frequent attacks by pirates from the Caribbean and to defend the region from harassment from the traders in Campeche wood. In the second half of the 19th century, during the so-called War of the Castes, the fortress once again became the scene of skirmishes for the possession of the fortress. It has recently been restored and sits looking over Lake Bacalar in the center of town.
Bacalar is simply a heavenly town that will make you fall in love with its small fishermen’s houses, and which is home to a beautiful turquoise lake and the Uchben Kah Ecotourism Park, where you can swim, snorkel, scuba dive and go out on a boat.
Come to live a unique experience in one of Mexico's Pueblos mágicos; visit Bacalar.
