January 2012
Some more clips from our recent trip. Again sorry about quality and silliness I didn't plan to share this way. The sulphur banks and lava tube are found in the national park along Crater Rim Drive on Big Island. The plateaus of lava are found as you drive down east side towards ocean.
Words can't describe how cool this place was. N

Kilauea Iki Trail - Top 10 Bucket List Hikes (Volcanoes National Park, Big Island, Hawaii)
This was one the best hikes in Volcanoes National Park! It seems to be the one that everybody does. You get great views from the rim, then inside the crater, it's like nothing else! You feel like you'll be swallowed by the volcano at any point! lol... It's definately a bucket list hike!
Kīlauea Iki Trail
Kilauea Iki Trail and Crater Rim Trail is a heavily trafficked loop trail located near Pahala, Hawaii, Hawaii that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is accessible year-round.
Great day hike down into and across a solid lava lake in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Klauea Iki Trail starts in the rain forest on the crater's rim. The trail descends 400 feet through the rain forest to the crater floor. Hikers will cross the still-steaming crater floor, past the gaping throat of the vent that built Pu'u Pua'i cinder cone, and return to your starting point via the crater's rim.

Volcano-Steam Vent-Sulphur Bank-Lava Tube-Devastation Trail On Big Island, Hawaii-UHD 4K
You will see the Hawaii Volcano National Park, and find the Jagger museum, see steam vents (caused by lava under the crust of the earth). The Thurston lava tube was fascinating, we also visited the hidden underground tunnel and Devastation Trail.
At Sulphur Banks (Ha'akulamanu), volcanic gases seep out of the ground along with groundwater steam. These gases are rich in carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide -- the gas that smells like rotten eggs. Some sulfur gases deposit pure crystals at Sulphur Banks. Other sulfur gases form sulfuric acid which breaks down the lava to clay. This clay is stained red and brown with iron oxide.
The Jagger Museum is named after Thomas A. Jagger, and it contains many exhibits and artifacts on volcanology. The Thurston lava tube is a tube through the earth that was carved out by a flow of lava many centuries ago, and you must go through a rainforest jungle in order to reach this spectacular natural wonder.
Devastation Trail is a trail that leads through an area that was devastated by volcanic activity when Kīlauea Iki erupted in 1959. Seeing the cinders made us realize just how devastating the volcanic eruption was.
The Big Island is the largest and the southeastern-most of the Hawaiian islands, a chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined and is the largest island in the United States.

Kilauea Volcano Eruption in Volcanoes National Park (Big Island, Hawaii)
Here is a DAY and NIGHT view of the Kilauea Volcano Eruption at Volcanoes National Park. You can get this view from the wall behind the Thomas A. Jaggar Museum, which is accessible 24/7. I highly recommend a visit in the day and in the night!
-----------
Kīlauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Island of Hawai‘i. Topographically Kīlauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kīlauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kīlauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth.
In fact, the summit of Kīlauea lies on a curving line of volcanoes that includes Mauna Kea and Kohala and excludes Mauna Loa. In other words, Kīlauea is to Mauna Kea as Lō‘ihi is to Mauna Loa. Hawaiians used the word Kīlauea only for the summit caldera, but earth scientists and, over time, popular usage have extended the name to include the entire volcano.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
We stop first at the Visitor's Center and get our first look at the Kilauea Volcano behind it. Then we drive around the Crater Rim Road, stopping at the Sulphur Banks, Steam Vents, the Halemaumau Crater Overlook, visit the Thomas A. Jagger Museum, then we drive through the SW Rift Zone and see the September 1974 lava flow, and on to the Keanakakoi Crater before driving south to the coast. Recorded: December 29, 1992.
Hiking the Kilauea Iki Trail from the Rainforest to Crater Floor, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
This is a portion of the Kilauea Iki Trail in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. We chose to hike the Crater Rim Trail portion first. This video is of the descent from the Crater Rim Trail to the Crater floor on the west side of the crater. When you do a search about this hike it will list it as challenging but I didn't find it to be. It was about a 4 mile hike that anyone in decent shape could do. Just wear decent shoes and be ready for it to be a bit chilly and windy in the crater.
Here's some general information about the hike.
At the top, just east of the main caldera, lies the crater of Kilauea Iki ('Little Kilauea'). The scene of one of Hawaii's most violent volcanic displays, the 1959 eruption saw lava shoot 1,900 ft into the air. This varied trail, considered by many to be the best in the Park, gives hikers a fascinating close-up view of the site of this eruption.
The trail winds down the wall of Kilauea Iki and heads west across the eerie crater floor, covered by hardened lava flows and surrounded by cliffs. After passing the vent of the 1959 eruption, the trail climbs out of the crater and reaches a junction shortly after, at the 2.4 mile/3.9 km mark.
Hikers at the bottom of the Kilauea Iki Crater. This diverse hike takes you through rain forests engulfed in gigantic ferns and dry rocky lava beds with intermittent steam vents and sulfur banks. This trail descends 400 feet through rain forest, crosses the crater floor, passes Pu'u Pua'i cinder cone, and returns via the crater's rim. Of interest: Rain forest, birds, insects, 1959 lava lake, steam vents, cinder and spatter cone.

Breathtaking, awe-inspiring, sacred. Clearly overcome with awe and wonder, when he visited Kilauea a century and a half ago, Mark Twain remarked aptly: ...here was room for the imagination to work!
A spectacular eruption has been underway in Halema'uma'u Crater since March 19, 2008. Because of this, Crater Rim Drive is closed at Jagger Museum and at the junction with Chain of Crater Road, so the Halema'uma'u Overlook is inaccessible. Great viewing of the eruption can be had from Jagger Museum; views of the ash cloud at night, lit up with the glow of molten rock from below the surface of Halema'uma'u, are particularly exciting. Please go here to learn more about this eruption.
The Hawai'ians revered the area around Halema'uma'u Crater as the home of the volcano Goddess, Madame Pele, who journeyed from Tahiti to Ni'ihau and Kau'ai before settling down at Halema'uma'u. For generations Hawai'ian Kahuna came here to divine the future, hold rituals, make sacrifices and appease the goddess with offerings. Commoners among the native Hawai'ians were not allowed within sight of the sacred grounds. Continuing into modern times on several ceremonial days each year (in times of eruptive quiescence), modern Hawai'ians gather on the crater floor to perform hula dances and other rituals to appease the goddess Pele.
