Two books... from Frederika Menezes (in Goa, India)
At a launch on May 29, 2014 at the Sunaparanta -- Goa Centre for the Arts, Altinho, Panjim. Books released were Unforgotten (a young adult novel) and Stories in Rhyme (a book of verse for children), written by the 34-year old Frederika Menezes.
Born in September 1979 in Goa, India, Frederika Menezes doesn't let Cerebral Palsy and a wheelchair come in the way of what she loves doing -- painting, writing and staying in touch with the world via cyberspace. At age 13, while still in school, she started her writing career as a poet and since then there has been no looking back. She has written and published two books -- a collection of poems titled The Portrait (1998) and a fiction/fantasy book The Pepperns and Wars of the Mind (2003).
In 1999, one of her poems was selected by the International Library of Poetry for publication in an anthology of poems -- Fire in the Heart. She won the J.C. Award (Junior Citizen of the Year) in 1999 from the J.C. Chamber of Panjim, Goa.

4) Caravela Café & Bistro- 31st jan Road, Panjim
Today we are going to have breakfast at Caravela Café & Bistro and Nalini cant stop smiling. The reason is this is one of the cafés which has a unique menu only for coffees and not any coffee, its an Indian brand called the Flying squirrel. The café serves the best Rissois (A rissol is a small croquette, enclosed in pastry or rolled in breadcrumbs, usually baked or deep fried. It is filled with sweet or savoury ingredients, most often minced meat or fish, and is served as an entrée, main course, dessert or side dish). Another amazing dish is the soup and the soup was served with olive oil. The brand is Azeite do Reino. Many years ago whatever came from Portugal was called do Reino meaning the Kingdom of Portugal.
They have 6 different coffee machines blending different coffees but the main 3 are Aromatique, Paramã and Sattva. But my favourite is the Sun Kissed.

BEST WAYS TO EXPLORE CULTURAL GOA
1. Visit a Portuguese-Goan house
The Braganza-Menezes house in Chandor is a private home that showcases the colonial splendour of 18th century Goa. The

Portuguese palanquins and porcelain from Victorian England and Macau.
2. Learn about Goa’s Portuguese heritage
Your cultural tour will be incomplete without a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage listed church and cathedral complex in
Old Goa with Se Cathedral, Bom Basilica de Jesu and the Church of St. Cajetan being the main structures of significance.
3. Explore Goa’s rich history at a museum
The biggest attractions at the Goa State Museum, near the Panjim bus stand, are the two antique lottery machines and the
examples of antique Portuguese furniture including a table used by the infamous Inquisition that landed on Goan shores.
The Goa Chitra Museum in Benaulim presents the ethnography of Goa.
4. Check out live-music restaurants in Goa
To Goa, music and song is like breathing. There are plenty of restaurants where you can get music groups or one-man music
bands playing instruments and singing live. Raj Pentagon in Majorda, Nostalgia in Raia and Peppers in Margao are just
three restaurants which have live Goan.
5. Get artsy at a gallery
The Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts in Altinho, Panjim, is a non-profit initiative that promotes learning and
enjoyment of the visual arts in Goa. There is an engaging art gallery and the centre runs workshops and many interesting
talks and events throughout the year. Check out its cosy, relaxing courtyard café.
6. Discover Goa’s spicy past
Learn why colonial traders flocked to Goa centuries ago for its spice trade. Nestled among lush, green plantations in
Curti, Ponda is Sahakari Spice farm. A visit includes a 45-minute tour of the spice plantations where you’ll see cardamom,
cinnamon, vanilla, pepper and cloves among other spices growing.
7. Go book-store hopping
Broadway bookstore in Panaji and Literati Goa book store in Calangute are two character-filled, independent stores for
booklovers of every age. Literati book store in particular has a cafe and both have a lovely collection of local authors
from Goa as well as paperbacks by renowned international authors.
8. Seek out these intriguing cultural venues
Situated in Campal, Panjim, Kala Academy is Goa’s state-run cultural centre. It often runs events, some of which are free,
including plays, artist exhibitions, dance and music festivals, concerts, workshops, seminars and other events that relate
to the cultural arts.
9. Experience the beauty of the local temples
The four hundred year old Shri Mangueshi temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in Ponda. The simple yet elegant
structure has a beautiful seven-story lamp tower or Deepastambha standing within the complex. Also in Ponda is the stone
pillared Shanta Durga temple which was built in the 18th century.
Festivals for the Future, Goa: Festivals Academy 2019
Festivals for the Future is British Council’s new arts programme in India – bringing together and building a network of the country’s most talented creative leaders and its dynamic cultural festivals. The first edition of the programme included a three-day intensive course in Goa in March 2019, on The Core Principles of Festival Management facilitated by leading UK experts David Micklem and Angela McSherry. The course was attended by 20 selected delegates from diverse and multi-disciplinary festivals across the country, presented in association with the Serendipity Arts Foundation.
The course covered the essentials for running a successful festival, including business models, programming and curation, audience development, budget management, promotions, advocacy and stakeholder management, monitoring and evaluation, and inclusive practices. Through workshops, case studies, peer to peer learning, mentoring, and plenary sessions, participants were encouraged to explore their festival’s creative vision in a national forum, to share knowledge and experience, and discuss the shared challenges relevant to sustaining and growing the festival sector.
Talks by local festival experts, networking events, an evening of #FiveFilms4Freedom at the Sunaparanta Goa Centre of the Arts, and an evening reception at the Museum of Goa – India’s largest private contemporary art space, were other highlights of the event.

Art In A Black And White World
This week, as the whole country discusses the black and white of money, markets and politics, we look at contemporary artists who offer a more nuanced approach to black and white. We head to Goa's Sunaparanta Centre for the Arts for a show by photographer Roger Ballen, who brings a luminescence to his monochromatic, surreal and unsettling work. We then profile painter Chetnaa Verma whose new show, 'Noir', is an exploration of black, a departure from her usual work. We also keep you updated about the upcoming events and happenings in the world of art and tell you about Mojarto.
