USA: HOUSTON: PRESIDENT CLINTON VISITS JOHNSON SPACE CENTRE
English/Nat
U-S President Bill Clinton is giving a boost to NASA and space exploration.
In a visit to the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas on Tuesday, Clinton insisted he remained committed to the space programme.
He also vowed that the U-S would remain involved and committed to development of an international space station.
Senator-turned-astronaut John Glenn didn't appear nervous about having the boss look over his shoulder on Tuesday.
NASA's newest and oldest astronaut led President Bill Clinton on a tour of the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas.
Veteran astronaut Glenn is preparing for a space flight in October.
After chatting with the crew that Glenn is flying with, Clinton gave an early bon voyage to a group of astronauts who will lift-off on Thursday.
He spoke via satellite phone to Columbia's crew now at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
Their 16-day mission will focus on the human nervous system and how it functions in space.
Glenn's mission later in the year will study the effects of space on ageing.
Speaking to NASA employees, Clinton joked about Glenn's zeal to be the oldest man in space.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I frankly was heart sick when he said he wasn't going to run again for the senate, he said, well I'm too old, then he said, by the way, could you get me into space?
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
But Glenn isn't new to the training he's undergoing.
He became a national hero when he was the first American to orbit the Earth more than three decades ago.
He'll be 77 years old by the time his shuttle lifts off, setting a new record as the oldest man in orbit.
While at Johnson, the President also addressed other NASA employees.
Telling them, you are the place where dreams are made real, he vowed to remain committed to space exploration.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
When it comes to exploring space we must never consider any mission impossible. The story of our space programme is the story of barriers broken and new worlds uncovered. let us make sure that is the story of our space programme in the twenty-first century.
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
Clinton also voiced his support for the international space station, which some have criticised as costly and unnecessary.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It was a fight for a while and there were those who we thought we should abandon it and ten or twenty years from now, people will wonder that we ever even considered such a thing, because we will all before long be thanking our lucky stars that we have the vision to work with people from around the world to set up the international space station in the sky.
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
Clinton also vowed that America will remain involved with the Russian space station Mir, despite its string of recent problems.
However the President avoided any specific promises on a future mission to Mars.
Clinton is on a dual-purpose trip to Houston.
On Tuesday evening he'll convene his second national dialogue on race.
In a town hall meeting, he'll use the country's avid interest in athletics and sports as a springboard for a discussion on race relations.

USA: ASTRONAUT SHANNON LUCID RETURNS AFTER 188 DAYS IN SPACE
English/Nat
Marathon US Astronaut Shannon Lucid returned to her home town of Houston, Texas Friday to a cheering crowd of fellow N-A-S-A employees ....and the President of the United States.
Lucid returned to Earth Thursday after spending 188 days aboard Russia's Mir space station, breaking the previous endurance record for a woman by 19 days.
With both hands on the rails, Shannon Lucid gingerly stepped off a jet at N-A-S-A's Ellington Field to a heroine's welcome that included a visit by President Bill Clinton.
Clinton was in Texas campaigning, and could not resist a photo opportunity with Lucid, whose 188 days in space shattered the world record for a woman and set a new record for an American.
Lucid walked to the platform before the cheering crowd of N-A-S-A workers accompanied by the commander of the shuttle mission that got her home after 6 months aboard the Russian Mir space station,
Atlantis Commander Bill Readdy encouraged her to take a seat, but Lucid balked, apparently not wanting to sit down in the presence of the President.
Clinton said he counted himself among Lucid's admirers, calling her a role model for America's youth.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think we all feel at least that we've gotten to know Dr. Lucid, watching her grin and bear it as the mission was extended, hearing her eagerness to see her family, her yearning for what she called the wind and the sun. Perhaps more than she knows, she has also set a remarkable example for a new generation of young Americans and especially young girls all across this country who look up to her and now see new possibilities for themselves. And we thank her for that as well.
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, US President
Clinton also hailed the rest of the crew from the shuttle Atlantis for taking one more step in the realm of international space exploration.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The mission from which Dr. Lucid returns continues to cement the close and growing bonds of co-operation between the United States and the Russian space programmes, something that we have worked very hard for. Not only the co-operation between our nation and Russia but between our nation and other nations as well in the space station project.
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, US President
Lucid, who has taken the notoriety in her stride, kept her remarks brief.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I am so thankful to all--everything everybody did, and I'm glad to be home, and all I can say is Houston never looked so good. Thanks.
SUPER CAPTION: Shannon Lucid, Astronaut
Doctors are unsure of the long-term effects of Lucid's record-breaking stay in orbit.
They will continue to monitor her medical condition for the rest of her life, hoping to learn more about what it takes to live in zero-gravity.

Space Shuttle Trainers CCTs
ANNOUNCER-SSgt Steven Conklin - Reporting(00:02):
From the outside, this machine appears to be a well preserved museum exhibit, but as you enter it, you begin to see the years of wear and tear it has endured from training astronauts at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
SOUNDBITE-Jill MacGregor -- Space Vehicle Mockup Facility Manager( 00:14):
The number of crews that sat in there and did their training and learned on it, it was really invaluable to the space shuttle program.
ANNOUNCER-SSgt Steven Conklin:
During the beginning of the Space Shuttle Program, NASA had 3 trainers built. Two Crew Compartment Trainers, or CCTs, with just a flight deck, and one full fuselage trainer, all 3 made to replicate the Space Shuttle and prepare astronauts for more than 100 space missions over the past 30 years. Even John Glenn trained on one in 1998 before he became the oldest man to fly in space. Astronauts like Mike Foreman remember when their training began on the CCTs.
SOUNDBITE-Mike Foreman -- NASA Astronaut(00:48):
First time you see the shuttle cockpit, you think wow, there must be 2000 switches, circuit breakers, dials, buttons, and it is intimidating at first. The space shuttle was 10 times more complicated than any other airplane any of us ever flew, so it was a challenge.
ANNOUNCER-SSgt Steven Conklin:
And that's where the CCTs came in. Astronauts would train in the CCT over hundreds of hours to familiarize themselves with the flight deck.
SOUNDBITE-David Pogue -- NASA Instructor(01:16):
That's why we do training, and that's why a mockup like this is important, you want to make sure that if they had an emergency and they needed to get out then there wouldn't be any problem with them being able to do it. so we practice it in a little more controlled environment but still a relatively realistic environment.
ANNOUNCER-SSgt Steven Conklin:
And just like the space shuttle, the CCTs are now retired, leaving only memories for Mike Forman.
SOUNDBITE-Mike Forman:
I'll always remember the Space Shuttle, that's the vehicle that took me to space. As long as I'm involved with the space program, to me the core vehicle is the space shuttle.
ANNOUNCER-SSgt Steven Conklin:
But soon, one of these trainers will give people near Dayton, Ohio a closer look into NASA's historic space program.
SOUNDBITE-Mike Forman:
And I always say the second best thing about going to space is coming back and telling people about it, sharing your experience, and by putting these in the public sectors, it allows people to kind of experience a little be of what we experienced.
ANNOUNCER-SSgt Steven Conklin:
The National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is welcoming one of the CCTs to its new home later this summer.
SOUNDBITE-Jill MacGregor:
It's just fantastic for a space and airplane geek like me, that would really be a neat place to visit.
ANNOUNCER-SSgt Steven Conklin:
The first CCT built, known as CCT one, has been training astronauts since 1979, and is scheduled to arrive at the museum on NASA's Super Guppy Aircraft. Reporting for Wright Patterson Air Force Base Public Affairs, I'm Staff Sergeant Steven Conklin.
SPACE/USA: TEXAS: SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA TO RETURN EARLY
English/Nat
Astronauts aboard the space shuttle Columbia scrambled to finish as many experiments as they could Monday before getting ready to return to Earth.
Their mission was cut short 12 days early because of problems with a power generator.
In a news conference, the astronauts said they were surprised by mission control's decision to cut short the mission.
They told reporters they were not consulted about it, but added they supported the
decision.
The decision to cut short the space shuttle's latest trip was taken here at mission control in Houston, Texas.
Columbia had been scheduled to return on April 20 but will now return to Earth 12 days early.
The astronauts said they were disappointed to be coming home early.
But they told reporters that despite the setback, they had been able to pack plenty of experiments into their shortened mission.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It's true that everybody is disappointed that we are going to have to come home early, not only the crew but the investigators and the researchers whose science we are up here to accomplish. But still, I think we packed a lot into a short period of time.
SUPER CAPTION: Columbia Commander Jim Halsell
Mission control was forced to cut short Columbia's mission because of problems with one of the shuttle's power generators.
The faulty fuel cell was shut down and emergency procedures reviewed in case one of the two other fuel cells failed.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
So I don't want to convey the opinion that we felt we were in imminent danger, certainly not. We felt that the situation was well in hand. But on the other hand, we want to be prepared for the next possible failure, and we feel like that's where we're at right now.
SUPER CAPTION: Columbia Commander Jim Halsell
The astronauts said they were surprised by mission control's decision to bring them home early but stressed they supported the action.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
So we have no hesitation about the people who are helping us out on the ground. We had an exciting time yesterday going through all the procedures, but I felt we were in synch one hundred per cent with the ground. They were helping us out every step of the way, and we have total confidence in the people in mission control, and in the mission managers that are making these decisions.
SUPER CAPTION: Columbia Commander Jim Halsell
The shuttle mission cost about 500 (m) million U-S dollars, excluding the experiments.
NASA officials said they didn't know how much the experiments cost, although the expense of equipping the laboratory was 35 (m) million U-S dollars.
But astronauts said it wasn't a waste of money.

In just a few days that we've had, we've managed to get results that were described that to me by the investigators. They told me before the mission, 'Hey, look, if we get a single data point, we'll be ecstatic, because these experiments are so difficult to do and they've never been done before, that that result in itself will make us very happy.' And we've gotten that many times over in just these four days. So on one hand I'm disappointed, but on the other hand I'm very happy that in the short time we've had, we've gotten them some good results that will move them on into the future.

The concern over the deteriorating generator was that hydrogen and oxygen could mix, overheat and blow up if the voltage dropped far enough.
Only two other shuttle missions have been cut short because of equipment failure.

Video of the Super Guppy landing at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. The Super Guppy was delivering a Crew Compartment Trainer
Air Force members from March ARB, CA, support the arrival of the NASA Super Guppy. The Super Guppy is a large, wide-bodied cargo aircraft used for ferrying oversized cargo components and equipment
Flight from Ellington Field to Dayton, Ohio didn't take days but it felt that way. The flight only took four hours, which sounds quick, but definitely doesn't feel fast in an aircraft that flies 250 miles per hour. Due to the weight of its cargo, the Super Guppy flew at an altitude of 12,000 feet, providing spectacular views of the countryside below.
Since the space shuttle's retirement in 2011, NASA has been finding new homes for its three crew compartment trainers. The trainers or CCT's were built to prepare astronauts for space flight, and now one of them is heading to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. But how do you get a space shuttle trainer, nearly 25 feet high and 20 feet long, from Houston, Texas to Dayton, Ohio? By truck? By Train? Nope, by Super Guppy. Only five Super Guppy's were built and NASA's is the only one still operational. Its hinged nose can open than 200 degrees and the cargo compartment is 25 feet tall, 25 feet wide and 111 feet long. The perfect size to transport a crew compartment trainer from Houston to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
