Viognier must be one of the most misunderstood grape varieties. Too often derided as sweet, or fatty and oily, it sits in the shadow of some of its other full-bodied white companions. When it's good however, and the balance between it's rich fruitiness and spicy savour is on point, it can be incredibly delicious. The 2015 Fairbank by Sutton Grange has a range of fruit flavours, from poached pear to white peach, all backed up by a lovely candied ginger and white pepper spice. This white wine certainly got power, but it's not overdone. The gentle acidity keeps everything in check. Viogn-yeah!

Let's Taste - Maidenii Classic Vermouth
Gilles Lapalus, French-born winemaker formerly at Sutton grange winery, was my recent guest on The Vincast podcast. Some years ago he became involved with a project to make a premium vermouth from Australian grapes. It's one of the few that are not only single-estate but also single-vintage. I haven't tasted a huge range of vermouths, but I thought I'd give it a go for Let's Taste. Let me know what you think!
Good Pair Days - Bespoke Bros Rosé 2015
Bespoke Bros was a collaboration between winemaker Gilles Lapalus (who formerly worked for central Victorian winery Sutton Grange, but now runs his own business), and renowned international wine writer Nick Stock. Sadly, the business relationship didn't last, but in it's short lifespan produced some very delicious wines!
Gilles makes complex, savoury wines, with a gentle hand of oak, and with plenty of inherent character. Nick has the good fortune to taste and drink many of the world's great and unusual wines, and has a truly international palate. The coming together of these two wine minds has resulted in some exceptionally well-crafted drops, and indeed wines that are outside the norm for traditional Australian wines. Their Syrah is medium-bodied and supple rather than full throttle, their rosé is spicy and ultra-dry, and has been aged in oak. Never ones to shy away from the search for flavour, they crafted wines that they wanted to drink, and the Australian wine landscape was better for it. Bravo.
This stunning rosé is a blend of barrel-aged Monastrell and Nebbiolo, which goes against the grain of what is considered the norm - it is rich and textured with a beautiful balance of savoury and fruit notes. It is serious rather than light and pretty, and has all the notes of a powerful red wine in a delicate and well fashioned rosé.

Australian Chardonnay has been on quite the journey over the past 10 years. Veering sharply away from the overlooked, tropical monsters of the nineties, we took the lean path, and indeed some wines took it a little far - all acidity and mean fruit. Recently however, the great Chardonnays have found the middle ground - oak in place but just supporting ripe fruit that has a firm backbone of acidity. These are the styles of wine that do Chardonnay the most favours, and show off its versatility. The Guthrie Picadilly Chardonnay is a white wine that ticks all these boxes - cashew, almond and vanilla from the oak, sitting comfortably alongside baked lemon and rich yellow pear. A whiff of gun smoke and grapefruit-flavoured acidity complete the very elegant and thoroughly modern picture.
