About Groot Constantia:
If you haven’t heard about Groot Constantia, then it is my pleasure to introduce you to South Africa’s oldest winery. I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t give some of the history about this estate. In 1679 Simon van der Stel was appointed by the Dutch East India Company to govern the Cape of Good Hope. After years of loyal service, he requested land from the Company. He periodically sent out riders to collect soil samples and in 1685 he found a potential wine-growing area that had magnificent scenery situated behind Table Mountain. Over the years the wines produced on the estate caught the attention of influential people across the globe – clearly due to its impressive quality. Global aristocracy made sure that they had enough stock of this acclaimed and precious product.
The estate was named Constantia after the Latin word for constancy or steadfastness. These attributes he valued greatly and today the winemaker, Boela Gerber and staff follow in his footsteps to uphold his enduring legacy of perfection at Groot Constantia.

Groot Constantia, South Africa’s Oldest Wine Estate
Step back 330 years to South Africa’s oldest wine estate, Groot Constantia, where one man’s love for wine set in motion the cultivation of 891 morgan of vineyards, creating the origins of the country’s wine industry. The architecture and lifestyle that evolved from those early years entrenched a rich heritage which survives in the Western Cape today.

Michell's Pass - Return of Steam - Part Two
In 2015 the Ceres Rail Company received their first newly restored locomotive, 19D No.3321 and started operations shortly there after.
Initially the company offered day trips from Ceres golf estate down the short branch line and Michell's Pass to Waverley wine estate.
Departing from De Meter station with the train pausing briefly at Waverley wine estate for the passengers to have lunch. The train would then continue to Wolseley where the locomotive would be turned on the tri-angle ready for the return trip back to Ceres.
Arriving back at De Meter the crew would once again uncouple the locomotive so that it could proceed to Prince Alfred Hamlet to be turned for the second trip of the day. This was sometimes repeated after the last trip of the day so that the locomotive would be ready for the next excursion.
Many of the locations seen in the clip are inaccessible by road and at the time I would use my night shift week to go filming there. I found packing lunch and spending the entire day up there to be the most efficient way to use my time.
Ceres Rail Company can be contacted at or via their Facebook account.

!Kwha ttu Day Trip with World Travel Market Africa
Recently we attended a day trip to San heritage site and well known location !Kwha ttu. This is running up to the latest World Travel Market Africa Event taking place this year in Cape Town, South Africa from the 18th to the 20th of April 2018. Register your free attendance today at the following link.
Before we get into our day trip, here is a brief history about !Kwha ttu:
In 1998, the Working Group for Indigenous Minorities in Southern Africa (WIMSA) agreed that the San needed assistance in training their own people to deal with tourism and how to showcase San culture to the world.
Swiss anthropologist Irene Staehlin agreed to help the San. In 1999, guided by her vision and inspired by heritage centres in America and Canada, she bought a small farm on the West Coast of South Africa for the !Khwa ttu project, namely a San Culture and Education Centre. She later set up the Ubuntu Foundation in Switzerland to help support the project.
Today the project is run by the !Khwa ttu Non-Profit Company, jointly directed by the Ubuntu Foundation Switzerland and the San, represented by WIMSA. The farm is held in perpetuity by the Meerkat Non-Profit Company for the sole use of the !Khwa ttu project, and can only be used as a San Culture and Education Centre.
For further information you can see more details on their website.
We started off our day at the Atlantic Beach Lodge and were greeted with lovely refreshments, snacks and a tour of the facilities.
Upon arrival we were greeted with heart warming smiles and spent some time learning about !Kwha ttu, the San heritage and what the future holds for this amazing location. We did a drive to the Lapa and enjoyed some refreshments while enjoying the amazing views of the landscape. Don't just take my word for it, check out the video and pictures below.

South Africa Chenin Blanc - Cooper's Hawk March 2018 Wine of the Month
Think back to a moment when you looked around and felt inspired,
impressed, ready for more. That was Cooper’s Hawk Winemaker
Rob Warren’s sense on his first trip to Stellenbosch, a designated Wine of Origin region in South Africa. The trip occurred back in the days before Rob worked in wine, but his career path would take a meaningful turn as he stood in the vineyards just outside of Cape Town and tasted the wine. This was the trip that inspired his decision to enter the winemaking world.
Stellenbosch, 25 miles from Cape Town, is nestled between coastal mountain ranges in a pleasant, Mediterranean climate. The area is a historical haven for Chenin Blanc, once called “Steen” by local winemakers who, until the 1960s, were unaware that this varietal was the very same as the famed Chenin Blanc of France’s Loire Valley. Chenin Blanc has been cultivated for over 400 years in Stellenbosch vineyards originally planted by Dutch settlers to supply thirsty merchants rounding the Cape of Good Hope. The area is rich with a variety of soil types and vineyard locations, making the Stellenbosch region a timeless source for world-class wines.
Though currently reinvigorated, the region has experienced a disrupted history. For much of the twentieth century, these wines were inaccessible due to apartheid embargoes. South African wines, including Chenin Blanc, have since exploded onto the wine scene and are now considered essential by wine lovers worldwide. Today, South Africa produces more of the varietal than the rest of the wine-producing world combined, and is synonymous with this fresh, versatile, aromatically fruity white wine. It’s no surprise that this bountiful and promising region dazzled Rob, as this wine will impress and captivate you!
Pair Cooper’s Hawk Chenin Blanc with Pan- Roasted Barramundi or Ellie’s Chicken Piccata for a meal that shows off a range of flavors, textures, and delightful aromatics.
