Cancun, Mexico VLOG (SWIMMING WITH WHALE SHARKS!)
Hi everyone and welcome to our Playa del Carmen, Mexico Vlog. Mexico’s culture and beauty has always been of our interest, so for @missanatorres birthday we decided to celebrate Mexican style in the stunning Playa del Carmen.
We were also aware that during the summer Whale Sharks migrate into Cancun, so we were eager to have the unique experience of swimming with these majestic creatures.
Not only did we experience the whale sharks but coincidently were in Mexico during their independence which was an unforgettable celebration filled with cultural dances, music, history, and authentic food and drinks. A true FIESTA! The hospitality and the warmth of the Mexican people made us fall in love with Mexico even more.
We strongly suggest going to Playa del Carmen and thank you for taking this experience with us through our Vlog!
Enjoy!

The whaleshark adventure is a once in a lifetime opportunity to safely swim with the largest sharks in the world. In the months of June, July, August and September the waters of the mexican Caribbean are one of the worlds largest gathering grounds for these incredible animals that can range from 15 to 40 feet in length. Just so you know the sharks eat plankton and not fish or tourists.
This one of a kind adventure begins with the rich ocean experience of Nacho Peon, a community based operator with a long and fruitful involvement in whale shark swims, open water activities and sport fishing. Your guide is a true waterman, as well as an expert and lover of the ocean with more than 40 years of experience in guiding adventure tours, services and marine science.
On this adventure you will cruise on a 33' motor catamaran Magister that was specifically designed and built for whaleshark watching. The boat is incredibly safe, comfortable, with a spacious deck and unique stability that is ideal for topside photo and video. The cruise itself is a lot of fun and often you are able to see amazing wildlife including dolphins, turtles, mantas and seabirds.
Upon spotting the whale sharks each guest will be able to put on their snorkeling gear and enjoy snorkeling with the sharks while accompanied by a guide. You will literally be able to see them right infront of you.
On this adventure you can swim with them as many times as you want and get as close as you want without touching them.
After everyone has had their fair share of swimming with the whalesharks we will head by to a nearby coral reef for great snorkeling or if others want to visit a beach we can go relax and enjoy lunch. The captain leaves it up to the guests to decide what they would rather do.
This is an absolutely unforgettable that you will remember the rest of your life, visit

Swimming with whale sharks in Cancun or Isla Mujeres, Mexico needs to be on your bucket list if you love the ocean!
In July 2017 I spent 8 days in Cozumel to go diving, but the real highlight of the trip was swimming with whale sharks! It’s amazing to see these huge creatures in person, and witness just how gentle they really are.
We were surprised that the whale sharks weren’t phased by having three divers (2 divers + guide) swimming around them (unlike most turtles).
Don’t touch the whale sharks, it’s the law!
We were 25-30 miles off shore when we found the whale sharks. It was interesting – The whole way out we saw ZERO whale sharks… then all of a sudden you see one, then another and another. You then realize you’re surrounded by them! There had to be at least 100 whale sharks when we went swimming with them in their natural habitat.
Every summer these slow-moving filter-feeders can be found off the coast of Mexico for their annual migration to warm water. It’s legal to swim with whale sharks during the season which runs from June to mid-September.
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world! While the largest confirmed whale shark on record is over 40 feet in length, most of the ones we swam with were 20-30ft.
Our Trip:
We stayed in Cozumel, Mexico and took the 5:45am ferry to Playa Del Carmen. From there with took a bus to Cancun where we boarded the boat to swim with whale sharks!!

Swimming with Whale Sharks In Cancun Mexico
My wife Mish and I had always wanted to swim with whale sharks. So we set off to The Rivera Maya, near Cancun to swim with these 30-50' gentle giants that are the largest fish in the world. They only eat plankton and not people which was a good thing when I swam around one of the Whale Shark's mouth. We were up at 4:45 to catch an early boat to get out to see the sharks before the crowds got there. SCUBA diving with the Whale Sharks isn't allowed by the government, so we were snorkeling. For 50' fish, the Whale Sharks don't move very fast when they are eating. But keeping up with them was a real challenge as they still move faster than we do. We were off and on the boat more than 10 times because we had to follow the Whale Sharks, jump in to get shots of their heads (All you get is tails as they swim away.) and then climb out to follow the next Whale Shark. We were lucky to see lots of Whale Sharks but we were swimming as fast and as hard as we could to get close to each one. Also, the water isn't as clear as you'd expect because the Whale Sharks only come out in the early morning when there's a plankton bloom at the surface. By afternoon, the winds have dispersed the plankton, so the Whale Sharks are mostly gone. Swimming with the Whale Sharks was certainly a bucket list experience that was truly worth the effort.

What a day this was! Lately, we've been wanting to do more tours in the Cancun area, so we got together with My Trish Advisor to set up a bucket list tour - Swimming with Whale Sharks!! To book your tour with Trish, head on over to
The tour starts in Cancun where you board a boat that takes you for a short boat ride over to Isla Mujeres. The relatively-calm ride is breathtaking with water consisting of shades of blue, green, and turquoise. AMAZING!!
If you're wondering what to do in Cancun, Mexico, this is definitely a tour that's worth considering. But before you book it, you should be aware that it does come with some drawbacks... Depending on where they're feeding at the time, it can be a very long boat ride out to see the whale sharks. For us, it was an hour and 20 minutes each way. Additionally, don't expect to be the only boat out there - this is a very popular tour and many people are trying to have the same experience. Unfortunately, that also means that you won't have a lot of time to swim with the whale sharks since everybody has to take turns.
With that said and expectations tempered, this is one once-in-a-lifetime experience! Being in the water with the worlds biggest sharks is incredible!
If you're visiting Mexico, you also MUST check out the beautiful Isla Mujeres! It's crystal clear water and soft sand beaches (free of seaweed, I might add) are a dream! This tour killed two birds with one stone...and it almost killed Maddie too. Not actually, but she did get very seasick. A good reminder to take Dramamine!
After the whale shark experience, we stopped by Isla Mujeres for a little while - our first time at the beautiful island. Our guides whipped up some tasty ceviche and we enjoyed the motion-free water and soft sand - Maddie was especially relieved!
We're going to have to come back to Isla Mujeres very soon. Since it's so close to Cancun and our home in Puerto Morelos, it's a really easy day trip for us.

G I A N T S - Whale sharks of Isla Mujeres
The Yucatan peninsula is one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world and every year just offshore from Cancun, the largest fish in the ocean aggregates in vast numbers to feed.
This very special aggregation is one of only a handful of such known sites where whale sharks aggregate and it has turned into a valuable ecotourism contribution to the local economy.
Filmed on Panasonic GH4 and Canon 7D
