THE SWISS NATIONAL PARK AT A GLANCE PART 1
25July2007. Founded in 1914 as one of the first national parks in Europe. Aim: The Swiss National Park is a sanctuary in which nature is protected against all interference by men, and the entire flora and fauna are left to their natural development. Major attractions: Unequaled alpine scenery, re-introduced bearded vulture, golden eagle, capricorn, chamois, stag, marmots, alpine forests and flowers. There is only one national park in Switzerland. Size: 172.3 km² (0.42% of the area of Switzerland) Elevation: Between 1400 and 3173 meter above sea level. Tree line: 2200 meter above sea level (Engadin only, around 1900 meter in the rest of Switzerland) 80 km of trails Structure: [ Alpine forest ][ Alpine meadow with marmot ][ Rocks ]..The Swiss National Park (SNP) is located in the very east of Switzerland in the Canton Graubünden in an area where the local language is Romansh (see Words and Phrases for more information about languages in Switzerland), therefore its official name is Parc Naziunal Svizzer.
Swiss National Park: the challenge of managing nature
Zoologist Flurin Filli the Swiss National Park in his native canton Graubünden like the back of his hand. On a hike through part of this unique natural landscape in the Lower Engadine region, he explains how the park deals with the problems arising when nature is left free of human intervention. But then the Swiss National Park is all about firsts. This was, after all, the first national park to be established in the Alps on 1st August 1914, and 100 years later it remains true to
its original conservation ethos. Little has changed over the course of a century and I hope we will be able to say the same in another hundred years' time, the park's communications
director Hans Lozza confesses. Our three aims are to protect, research and inform. Since the park was founded, no trees have been felled, no meadows cut, no animals hunted. This is
what nature left to its own devices looks like.Rugged and beautiful is how it looks, particularly in the dew of a summer's morning, as the clouds part and light filters softly through
treetops of larch and pine, dappling the footpath that weaves ever so gently higher. Our guide, Roman Gross, has been leading group hikes in the park for the past eight years. What
keeps him there, I ask. Every trail is different. Every season has its own appeal, he replies. He goes on to cite the incredible wildlife in spring when the park wakes up from its long
winter slumber, the profusion of flowers in summer, the spectacle of the stag rutting in late September, the golden larch forests in October. What we have here is a little Canada – pristine forests, mountains and lakes that are undisturbed by human intervention, he says, not without a hint of pride. We arrive at the clearing of Alp Stabelchod at 1958m, where
Roman's binoculars and telescope allow me to pick out red deer grazing in the distance and a pair of nimble-footed chamois. The meadows are pockmarked with marmot holes but why, I
ask Roman, can't we hear their shrill whistling that warns of enemies approaching from the ground? It's because they feel no threat from us up here. They are savvy enough to realise
that we won't leave the trail, he says. As if to prove the point, a couple of podgy specimens emerge to stand sentinel over their burrows. The jagged summit of 2328m Margunet comes
into focus and by the time we reach the saddle, we are famished and ready for a Swiss-style picnic of cheese, tangy cured salsiz sausage and chocolate. The views that stretch across
the starkly eroded, moraine-streaked peaks are phenomenal,

THE SWISS NATIONAL PARK AT A GLANCE PART 2
25July2007. The Swiss National Park (German: Schweizerischer Nationalpark; French: Parc National Suisse; Italian: Parco Nazionale Svizzero; Romansh: Parc Naziunal Svizzer) is located in the east of Switzerland between Zernez, S-chanf, Scuol and the Fuorn Pass in the Engadin valley. As of 2004, it is the only National Park in Switzerland, though there are plans to create more. It has an area of 174.2 km² and is the largest protected area of the country. It was founded on 1 August 1914, the national holiday of Switzerland. It was one of the earliest national parks in Europe. In the park, one is not allowed to leave the road, make fire or sleep outside the Chamanna Cluozza, the mountain hut located in the park. It is also forbidden to disturb the animals or the plants, or to take home anything found in the park. Dogs are not allowed, not even on a leash. A visitor centre is located in Zernez.
St. Moritz and the Swiss National Park
Allegra! This time we travel to the far reaches of Switzerland, to where they speak a nowhere else found mysterious tongue. What is this I hear you ask? Well unfortunately I didn't record any.

The Swiss National Park
A trip through the Swiss National Park after an early snowfall. Switzerland's only national park is in the canton of Graubünden in the Engadin valley. We used our Swiss Pass for the bus through this area.
The park was established by some scientists who wanted to preserve the land for future generations. It's about 65 square miles of untouched wilderness---natural beauty at its best.
