Vizag Think piece for Tribals | Kiran Andhra Pradesh | A well wisher of Andhra Odisha Tribals
Think piece for Tribals | Kiran Andhra Pradesh | A well wisher of Andhra Odissha Tribals
Think Peace was established with the fundamental purpose of promoting citizen participation and collective action towards a better society. We aim to create opportunities of community service, foster leadership and empower the generation. We support programs in the areas of tribal and rural development, legal literacy, education, healthcare and equality.
Our Mission: We are a non-profit organization devoted to working collectively towards an equitable society.
Administrative Information
Think Peace Organisation is a Public Charitable Trust registered under the Indian Trusts Act. The Trust was founded by Mr. Kiran Chukkapalli, a former media and entertainment professional who now dedicates his time and resources to the cause of the organization.
Tribal Research and Improvement Group (TRIG)
The Tribal Research and Improvement Group (TRIG) is a tribal welfare-oriented project. That was started on September 17, 2011 in the Araku Valley region of the Andhra-Orissa border. The tribal areas of this region suffer from a great development deficit on account of the remote location, lack of basic infrastructure, poor literacy levels, lack of healthcare facilities, extremist presence, and poor administrative backup. TRIG’s objective is to alleviate the living conditions of the inhabitant tribes of this region and empower them to pursue personal, social and economic security.
CLEAN LIGHT INITIATIVE
Clean Light Initiative is a Think Peace initiative to bring clean and reliable source of light to the lives of one million Indians living in poor, uninhabitable conditions in rural and urban India.
SUBHRATHA
Rag-pickers welfare program
The Rag-pickers Community is a visible group of people who live in extremely poor socio-economic conditions. Rag-pickers are regularly seen sifting through piles of trash, working long hours under harsh climate conditions, carrying large sacks, collecting plastic, paper and metal waste from streets, alleys, overflowing bins and dump yards. They act like an informal recycling army in India who forage garbage across the country, at least partially weeding out vast tons of recyclable waste.
Priyadarshini Colony in Visakhapatnam is one such colony inhabited by about 300 rag-picker families. The residents of the colony work in the Kapuluppada dump yard under extremely poor conditions and are at constant risk from industrial and medical waste containing contaminated, infection waste, toxic chemicals, inflammables and sharp objects. Consequently, the rag-pickers here are frequent sufferers of injury, dermatological, respiratory and muscular problems. There are no sanitation measures or washing facilities in these places.
The Subhratha Mutually-aided Rag Pickers Labour Contract Co operative Society works towards the social, economic and occupational welfare of rag pickers. As a vital step towards occupational safety, there is an immediate need to provide safety shoes to workers in the dump yard. Think Peace has partnered with Subhratha to support this cause and we are currently raising funds for this endeavor.

East India - Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh
The Shri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha temple, Simhachalam is a South Indian Hindu temple situated on the Simhachalam hill, which is 800 metres above the sea level at a distance of ten miles to the north of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It is dedicated to one of the Hindu trinity deities Vishnu, who is worshipped there as Varaha Narasimha.
The Temple truly is great pilgrim site.
Every day this temple in Visakhapatnam is visited by thousands of devotees from round the world hoping for an answer to their prayers.
But every miracle requires a sacrifice - and many pilgrims sacrifice their hair. Men and women shave of their hair.
They even shave the hair of the little children.
Ffascinating to see how serious and devote whole families take part in this event.
After the temple the videoreport covers a visit to the famous fish market of Visakhapatnam. A guzzling place where the fish is brought at land, is sorted, dried and sold.

Bagatas- The fascinating world of Bagatas
Andhra Pradesh and the border regions of Orissa have several unique things that remain cut-off from the world at large. The unique customs, rituals, fairs, festivals of all the tribes have attracted the finest of anthropologists from all over the world. The interactions have given new twist and newer meanings about their livelihood. It is estimated that there are 33 lakh tribals, 50 lakh nomads and other backward people in Andhra Pradesh spread over the eight districts of Srikakulam to the Khammam(Telangana) right up to the Adilabad(Telangana) region. Most tribals have preferred to establish their settlements in the hilly and forest regions of the State.
However, it may confound many that several tribes remain as mysterious as the people from the Stone Age, It is of such inexplicable levels that except those traversing the region, where dense forestry is the order of the day, a tribe called Bagata remains unknown to humanity. On the social fabric, the Bagata community is regarded as one of the aboriginal tribes and come under the Scheduled tribes of India. The tribal communities reside in different sectors of Orissa and apart from that, they are also found in Andhra Pradesh. This tribal community is known by varied like Bagatha, Bhakta, Bagat, Bagodi or Bogad.
Bagata is an ethnically significant tribe of Andhra Pradesh that predominates then scheduled areas of Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts. Most of the present day tribesmen, who account for 2.6 per cent of the State’s tribal population, trace their roots to the erstwhile Muttadars and traditional village headmen of Visakhapatnam district. Findings are that 8.96 per cent of the Bagata population is literate. The percentage of female literacy is extremely low with 5 per cent when compared to the 12 percent achieved by the males. Bagata tribe is divided into a number of unilateral agnatic king groups called “Gothrams” or `Vamsams’. These are further subdivided into a number of surname groups which regulate matrimonial alliances.
