Isabela West, Tagus Cove, The Galápagos Islands - Ecuador, South America
In 2019 I spent 8 Days on an amazing Boat Tour Of The Galápagos Islands. Here is a selection of short video diaries of my trip. Day 6 – West Isabela Island. Our final stop on Isabela was Tagus Cove. From the panga, we could see the unexpected sight of graffiti up the cliffs which jarred against everything I had seen & heard over my time on the islands. The writing was etched by sailors scratching the names of their vessels & the date on the rock. The trick was to try & get yours the highest. The oldest is from 1836. This puts a whole other perspective on it. To see more of my adventures why not subscribe to my blog?

Ecuador, Galapagos Isabela Island - Tagus Cove & Urbina Bay Day 3
The staff on the M/C Ocean Spray was outstanding, had the greatest time. Met some great people and all had a great time. Trip was too short, went by too fast.
I would like to thank our naturalist, Carlos Palma for sharing some of his underwater pictures and movies.

ISABELA Tagus Cove
On the way to Tagus Cove, the boat sail through the Bolivar Channel. The Cronwell Current, make these waters the coldest and most productive in the Galapagos, where whales are frequently seen. Tagus Cove, named after a British ship that moored here in 1814. Used as an anchorage for pirates and whalers. The names of their ships are carved into the rock above our landing, a practice prohibited these days. Around the cove's sheltered cliffs blue-footed boobies, brown noddies, pelicans and noddy terns make their nests, and flightless cormorants and penguins inhabit the lava ledges.
From our landing, a wooden stairway rises to the trail entrance for a view of Darwin Lake, a perfectly round saltwater crater, barely separated from the ocean but above sea level. The trail continues around the lake through a dry vegetation zone, and then climbs inland to a promontory formed by spatter cones. The site provides spectacular views back toward our anchorage in the bay, as well as Darwin Volcano and Wolf Volcano farther north.

Tagus Cove It is a beautifully well protected cove sheltered by the shoulders of two volcanic craters and has been used as an anchorage for over 300 years. Arriving here the boat will sail through the Bolivar Channel, these are the coldest most productive waters in the Galapagos.
Tagus Cove, named for the British naval vessel that moored here in 1814, was used historically as an anchorage for pirates and whalers. The coves quiet waters make for an ideal panga ride beneath its sheltered cliffs, where blue-fotted boobies, brown noddies, pelicans and noddy terns make their nests, and flightless cormorants and penguins inhabit the lava ledges.
From the shore, a wooden stairway rises to the dusty trail passing through the Palo Santo Forests to reach the perfectly round saltwater crater, Darwin Lake.
I was also surprised by the more recent graffiti Unfortunately - many of the old ships and even some more recent ships have left their marks with maritime graffiti along the walls. The graffiti at the walls is banned today - but the historical graffiti remains a tourist attraction, but even some of the historical artifacts are not always pleasant to watch.

Galapagos - Isla Isabela - Tagus Cover - Orca eating Sunfish on 2/26/2014
WOW! Nigel wasn't sure if he had caught this footage, but he did!
He captured these Orca Whales hunting and then feeding on a HUGE Sunfish they caught for breakfast! I was in the 2nd panga shooting from a different angle, but Nigel has some really amazing footage from his iPhone. The green circle shows the Sunfish and I repeated the last part of the clip with zoom.
