Travel in Taiwan (2015, 7/8)
By Rick Charette
Qixingtan is a landscaped area immediately north of Hualien City. The name means “Seven Star Lake,” but this is in fact a lovely arcing bay of crystalline blue-green Pacific waters, invariably made even more photo-friendly by local fishermen busy on their craft close inshore. The bay’s north end is the north terminus of a breezy seaside bike path stretching 21km to Nanbin Park on Hualien City’s south side. There are bike-rental stations near the bay’s north and south ends. Among the many other facilities are the Stone Sculpture Park, Star Watching Plaza, Sunrise Building (Qixingtan’s sunrises are renowned), children’s playground, and seaside botanical garden. At bikeway-side are signboards explaining the seaside ecology, many with English. Another key draw is the terrific camera-perfect view of distant Qingshui Cliff.
Shitiping. The name means “stone steps.” The dramatically terraced volcanic rock and raised-coral formations here form what looks like a staircase rising out to sea. The sea’s great erosive powers are in visually inspiring evidence here – all about are kettle holes and surging tide pools. The teeming marine life draws fishermen, shellfish collectors, and scuba divers. The distinctive ecology also features such oceanside-adapted plants as screw pine, cactus, and morning glory. There isn’t much shade, so bring water; there’s also ice cream, popsicles, and other cooling goodies available at the visitor center.
Starchasers (as in “movie stars”) will be especially thrilled to learn about the existence of Niushan, where legendary director Martin Scorcese, Irish actor Liam Neeson, and other big names recently did shooting for the movie Silence, scheduled for release in 2016. What you’ll find at the end of a steep, narrow, long-grass-brushed road that leads off the here inland-and-upland coastal highway is a long and dramatically fetching arc beach bracketed by mountains that drop into the sea. The only buildings here are right behind the isolated beach – those of the Niushan Huting, a combination restaurant/café/bar/homestay/campground complex (rainbowiscoming.com/huting; Chinese), owned by members of the Amis tribe, Taiwan’s largest, and beside these a couple of tourist-draw thatch-roof structures from the faux village built for Silence (the rest were being torn down the day we visited). “Niushan” means “cow mountain”; to find the side-road entrance, look for the highway-side “Niushan Huting” sign on a totem pole capped with a steer-head sculpture (26.6km mark).

⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking Taipei, Taiwan : Wanhua District (December 16, 2019)
A walk through the Wanhua District of Taipei, Taiwan.
From Wikipedia:
Wanhua District, known in Taiwanese Hokkien as Báng-kah khu and historically as Monga or Monka, is a district in Taipei, Taiwan. It is Taipei's oldest district. The district is home to historic buildings such as the Bangka Lungshan Temple, an iconic historic temple, and the Red House Theater, the first and largest teahouse and playhouse in Taiwan. Taipei's oldest, but decaying, garment district is also here.
As Wanhua District was Taipei's first district to undergo economic development, there are many old buildings and cultural sites. The large number of temples in this area is attributed to its prosperous past originating from the Qing era. The district can be divided into three sections: northern, central, and southern. The northern area, including Ximending, has become home to many shopping centers and is popular among the younger generation. Central Wanhua is known for its historical sites like Lungshan Temple, Qingshui Temple, Qing Shan Gong and Bopiliao Historic Street; traditional shopping; and local snacks. Southern Wanhua is mainly a residential area with a wide city park, also known as the Youth Park.
Wanhua District is divided up into 36 villages (里) and 722 neighborhoods (鄰). In recent years, the population in the district has been in decline. The district also has an older and fatter population than those of other districts. It also has a higher concentration of Mainland Chinese. Nevertheless, this district continues to be treasured by many as it is representative of some of Taipei's richest historical cultures. An example would be the annual temple rituals held at Qing Shan Gong, also known as the Qing Shan King Sacrificial Ceremony. This is a massive event that involves touring Wanhua for 3 consecutive nights.

Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park (車籠埔斷層), ZhuShan, Nantou, Taiwan, 7/3/2013
Chelungpu Park is located across from the ZhuShan ramp of Formosa Freeway. As implied by its name, Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park is built for preserving the surface rupture of Chelungpu Fault caused by 1999 Jiji Earthquake. Featuring the spectacular surface faulting with vertical displacements, the Park consists of two main parts: the Geological Science Hall and the Fault Preservation Hall. The former mainly introduces Taiwan's geological features through films, photographs, illustrations, interactive screens and exhibits, while the latter, an eggshell-shaped building, displays the original shape of the fault caused by the Jiji Earthquake (921 earthquake).
Beautiful cherry blossoms spots outside of Japan
March is here, which means soon it’ll be the cherry blossoms season! Everyone knows Japan as the ultimate place to find these pretty five-petaled pink flowers, but if Japan is too expensive for your cherry blossoms chase dream, worry not because the flower also blooms in several other countries.
1. South Korea
Jinhae
Jinhae may not ring a bell for some, but the naval port city is the best place to go in South Korea for your cherry blossoms chase. Jinhae Cherry Blossoms Festivals attracts over 2 million tourists every year. The best place to spot the beautiful flowers is Gyeonghwa Station, which used to be a functioning railway station before the service was discontinued in 2006. Yeojwacheon Stream, a lovely stream lined with cherry trees, is another spot to admire the flowers.
Seoul
Every year during the cherry blossoms season, Yeouido Park is flocked by couples who wish for a romantic date under the flowers. With over 1800 cherry blossoms trees, there’s no better place to get your blossom fix especially if you’re not leaving Seoul. The park is located right next to Han River, so you can take a walk, ride bicycles or have a picnic while gazing at the cherry blossoms. After dark, the flowers lit up and there will be live music performances and art exhibitions.
Jeju Island
Jeju Island is the first place to see cherry blossoms every year due to its location in the far south of the country. The island itself is synonymous with idyllic beaches, scenic routes and volcanic landscapes, making the place even more ethereal. Experience the blossoms at the Jeju Cherry Blossoms Festival where you can catch the sight of the majestic King Cherry trees in bloom. Otherwise head to Jeju Sports Complex or downtown Seogwipo.
2. Beijing
Yuyuantan Park
Find the largest cherry trees collection in Beijing in Yuyuantan Park, one of the most famous locations to catch the flowers in China. This park is where the Yuyuantan Cherry Blossoms Festival, the largest festival of its kind in the northern China, takes place. The cherry trees were actually given by Japan in 1973 as a diplomatic gift. An admission fee of 10 yuan per person will be charged to enter the park. During the cherry blossoms season, many stalls selling an array of cherry blossoms flavoured snacks will be available.
Beijing Botanical Garden
As soon as Beijing starts to warm up, the peach blossoms at Beijing Botanical Garden bloom and fill up the place with pink hues. With the largest peach blossom garden in the whole of Northern China, the botanical gardens have over 70 varieties of peach trees with their own unique characters. Don’t forget to locate the historic Cao Xueqin Memorial and Liang Qichao Tomb in the park.
3. Taiwan
Yangmingshan National Park
Yangmingshan is one of Taiwan’s finest national parks and undoubtedly the best place to admire cherry blossoms in the country. In 2017’s cherry blossoms season alone, this national park garnered over a million tourists from all around the world. The flowers in Yangmingshan bloom as early as February, which makes it perfect for those who wish to skip winter faster. The park also is home to natural hot spring, a sulphur lake and Taiwan’s largest volcano.
Alishan Forest Recreation Area
A 2.5 hour trip from Taichung City is Alishan Forest Recreation Area, home to high mountains and lush greenery intertwined with pink cherry blossoms. Alishan is located 2,500 metres above sea levels, so its cool climate makes the place perfect to spend the day outdoors. Different species of cherry trees, namely Taiwanese Sakura, Yoshino Cherries and Double-Layer Sakura, bloom at different times from January till April. Admission to the park is regulated to only 160,000 visitors per day to avoid overcrowding, so hurry down to get the best view.
