XIAMEN CHINA • MUST TRY STREET FOOD
A weekend away to Xiamen, China (from Hong Kong) is only around an hour of a flight away!
While our main purpose of the trip was to visit the UNESCO listed Hakka Walled Villages (Tulou Clusters) located further inland of Fujian province (uploading those videos soon so be sure to subscribe!) we came via Xiamen and had a bit of time to wander around.
In this video, I’ll be sharing the street food we managed to fit in while walking around Xiamen’s Main Street - Zhong Shang Pedestrian Road (中山路步行街) | zhong shan lu bu xing jie).
Located in China’s south east, you’ll find that much of the street food we found in Xiamen had much influence from Taiwanese cuisine - due to the fact that geographically speaking Taiwan is just a bit east of Xiamen.
Asides from food there are other places to visit (like Gulangyu Island) however we didn’t get enough time so hopefully next time!

Xiamen, China - Zhongshan Lu Shopping Area
This is a video of a popular shopping street called Zhongshan Lu, on Xiamen Island in China which is in Fujian Province facing Taiwan. This shopping area has all the international famous brands and stores, but also COPIES of EVERYTHING! The aroma in the air is all sorts of Chinese food....some good and some pretty awful looking. I lived in Xiamen for 2 years and would be happy to set up a tour for anyone interested in going, whether for pleasure or business. Xiamen is the new land of opportunity!

Street Food in China - Nanning Night Market
Surprisingly big street food night market in Nanning. Hundreds of street food stands in an older quarter of town. I filmed at around 11 pm, so the market wasn't packed with people - it's open until 3 am.
The best street food in Fuzhou!
Every evening in Fuzhou, bustling street food hotspots burst into life. Ashley gives us a tour around her local stalls and shares some of her favourite go-to dishes, with an eco-friendly twist!
Visit to find out how to teach English in China. You can also visit to learn more from Ashley about sustainable travel.
Street food is a staple all around Asia, and Fuzhou is no exception. It has an amazing community feel, with locals returning nightly to their favourite stalls , looking for delicious and heart-warming food that doesn't break the bank. One concern Ashley has though is the plastic waste created from this not exactly eco-friendly, single-use way of operating.
Ashley's personal solution is to provide her own re-useable bowl and cutlery where ever she chooses to eat. With a little forethought, Ashley is able to make a difference, cutting down on the amount of waste she is creating. With her boyfriend Sam, she is creating a way for digital nomads to share sustainable travel ideas, while provide answers of her own. You can learn more about this from their website:
Ashley's favourite dish is the incredible Bai Guo. Bai Guo are noodle-shaped, fried rice cakes. The rice cakes are stir-fried with vegetables, soy sauce, an array of spices, then served up piping hot. Its a flavour bomb that provides awesome tastes and textures. The rice cakes are glutenous, chewy and soak up all the flavours of the dish. It's a must-try treat!
Next up we ate some classic Chinese BBQ. Lets be honest, anything deep fried tastes good. That's science, and we could not argue with it after chomping down on a selection of chicken, mushrooms, eggplant, lamb, potatoes and tofu. All of these were given a quick deep fry, before being finished on a small BBQ. While on the BBQ our meal was generously coated in a secret concoction that made everything pop with flavour.
Trying these foods was an amazing experience that we highly recommend to everyone visiting Fuzhou. There are plenty of street food locations such as this all around the city. It's a good chance to be brave, eat something new, and make some friends.
