Behind the building on the left hand side one can see the two towers of the Great Chapel of Aletheia University (formerly Tamsui Oxford College established in 1882). Aletheia (ἀλήθεια) is the Koinē (κοινή) Greek word meaning the state of not being closed or concealed, which approximately signifies disclosure or truth.

Trip to Tamsui Old Street (淡水老街) and waterfront in Tamsui District (淡水區; formerly called Danshui District and also spelt Danshuei District and Tamshui Township) in New Taipei City, Taiwan (ROC).
Tamsui [1] (淡水, or Danshui, Danshuei, Tamshui) is a smaller city to the north of Taipei that was the center of shipping and commerce in northern Taiwan in the 19th century. The city is still popular with visitors from Taipei and boasts many historical attractions, and is a popular location for viewing the sunset.
Hongmao Castle (Fort San Domingo) (紅毛城, lit: Red Hair Castle) was constructed by the Dutch as 'Fort Anthonio' in 1641, and gained its present name in reference to the red-haired Dutch. The compound also served as the British Consulate in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It enjoys commanding views over the mouth of the Tamsui (Danshui) River. Address: 1, Lane 28 Zhongzheng Road, Danshui. MRT to Danshui Station (Danshui line), shuttle bus red 26 to castle. Tel:2623 1001.
Tamsui Old Street and waterfront (淡水老街): Located along the Tamsui (Danshui) River, this pedestrian shopping area offers tourists a wide selection of restaurants, arcades, and stores specializing in traditional handicrafts. Visitors can sample Tamsui's local specialties: A-Gei (crystal noodles stuffed in fried bean curd, served with a mild hot sauce), fish ball soup, and iron eggs (eggs which have been stewed in a mix of herbs and spices until pickled). The area is located right outside the north side of the MRT Danshui Station and stretches north to the ferry docks. Do try the food vendors which are located up and down the strip.
The Tamsui Ferry Pier is located near the north end of the waterfront area and offers ferry rides across the river to Bali Township, as well as to Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf further north. Tickets run around NT$50 to Bali, and NT$100 to Fisherman's Wharf. When taking the ferry don't stand outside unless you enjoy getting wet! Closed in the event of bad weather.
Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf (淡水漁人碼頭) is located further downstream from the town itself and offers a boardwalk, chic coffee shops and food stalls, and some seafood restaurants with prices that the average local would consider outrageous (but may seem reasonable to visitors from Western countries). Fisherman's Wharf is also a departure point for tourist boats traveling along Taiwan's scenic northeast coast. The Lover's Bridge, a single slanted tower cable stay pedestrian bridge, that is modeled after a sailing ship's mast and rigging, spans the harbor. The bridge is illuminated by different-colored lights at night, making this area a favorite with local couples and romantics, and a popular site for shooting Taiwanese serial dramas. Outdoor concerts are sometimes held in the amphitheater, and some of the restaurants feature occasional live music.

Traveling 2 --Tamshui (Fort San Domingo; DAN SHUI HONG MAO CHENG)
Spanish fort constructed at the mouth of the Tamchuy (淡水, now Danshui) River. Another Western language name of the fort is San Domingo, while its Chinese name translates into fort of the red-haired (紅毛城).
Spaniards first noticed a port in the north of Taiwan in 1597, which was named Puerto Tamchuy. The Spanish occupied Quelang (雞籠, now Keelung) Port in 1626, and in the following year, they sent soldiers to the region around the Tamchuy River to trade for food supplies. These soldiers were attacked by local inhabitants, which persuaded Antonio Carreno de Valdes, the commanding officer of the troops stationed in Formosa, to send soldiers to retaliate. The Spanish likely established their base at Tamchuy soon after this event. Writing in 1930, the Spanish scholar Dr. Jose Maria Alvarez writes that Spanish troops were stationed in northern Taiwan by the year 1628.
In 1629 the Dutch East India Company dispatched a fleet of ships to sail from the Dutch base in Tayouan (大員) to northern Taiwan on a reconnaissance mission. The Dutch fleet entered the mouth of Tamchuy River on August 13th and discovered that some Spanish buildings surrounded by bamboo fences had been built on the land in the area. The two sides bombarded each other with cannon fire on August 15th. The Dutch later made illustrations to record the event. According to an extant Dutch map, one side of Fort Santo Domingo faced the river, while the three other sides were surrounded by barricades. A round fort with earthen walls was later constructed within the barricades, and 50 troops were stationed inside. Locals from around Tamchuy attacked the fort in 1636, but it was defended by the Spanish. The Spanish would give up Fort Santo Domingo in 1637, taking their personnel and weapons away from the Tamchuy River.
The Dutch conquered the Spanish base at Keelung in 1642, and in the following year, the Dutch established a fort at Tamchuy. The site of the Dutch fort was probably in the vicinity of the current site of Fort Santo Domingo. The Dutch sent soldiers and Chinese laborers from Teyowan to construct the fort, completing it at the end of the year and naming it Fort Antonio (安東尼城).
In 1661 (15th year of Yongli [永曆] Emperor) Zheng Chenggong (鄭成功) attacked the Dutch bases in Tainan. The Dutch troops stationed in Quelang initially withdrew from their fort in June. Dutch soldiers stationed in Danshui did not retreat to Tayouan until November, making a point to burn down their fortress before they left. During the reign of the Zheng clan, the fortress had already fallen into disuse. After the Qing (清) dynasty came to rule Taiwan, the fort was further left to ruin. In 1724 (2nd year of the Yongzheng [雍正] Emperor) the official in charge of Tamsui Subprefecture (淡水廳) Wang Qian (王汧) renovated the fort, adding a new walls and doors. However, because the layout of the port had changed, the fort lost its defensive capabilities. After a many years of neglect, the fort again fell to ruins. Following the Treaty of Tianjin (天津), the port of Tamchuy was opened to international trade. In 1867 (6th year of the Tongzhi [同治] Emperor) Britain leased the old Dutch fort as a consulate, adding crenellations and turrets to the roof, as well as a crenellated terrace to the south wall. During the Japanese period of rule over Taiwan, the British renewed their lease of the fort in 1912 (45th year of Meiji [明治] Emperor). After diplomatic relations between China and Britain were cut off in 1972, the fort returned to government management in 1980 because of foreign mediation. The fort was later classified as one of Taiwan's first-class historical monuments.
