Tasman Glacier Explorers Tour (Aoraki/Mt Cook) in Winter - NZ Road Trip
An amazing encounter with New Zealand's largest glacier, the Tasman Glacier. Explore and learn about the ever-changing glacial landscape as our journey across the terminal lake in the custom-built MAC Boats with our experienced guides. Icebergs of every shape and size periodically tear away from the face of the glacier into the rapidly growing lake. Lateral moraines rear up almost 200m to remind us of the scale and greatness that the glacier has reached in previous times.
With the effects of global warming and other climatic processes taking their toll on New Zealand glaciers, their retreat is imminent. Now approximately 27km long and 600m deep, the Tasman Glacier is melting and calving at an exponentially increasing rate. In recent years the Tasman Glacier has changed from a 'melting' to a 'calving and melting' terminus, resulting in a terminal lake that is rapidly increasing in size.

Tasman Valley Aoraki Mount Cook NP New Zealand
Checking out the Tasman valley and doing some short day hikes around this area. There's no public transport from the Mount Cook Village here. Best bet is to go to the intersection that leads to Tasman valley and hitch a ride to the Blue Lakes parking lot. Luckily the park ranger picked me up, and later on I hitched a ride on a school bus with students going on a field trip to go back to the village. This is also the starting point if you want to hike up Mount Cook all the way up to Ball Hut shelter pass.

New Zealand South Island Travel : Aoraki / Mt Cook, Hooker Valley
This is one of my favourite tracks in NZ South Island.
Aoraki / Mt Cook may not as popular as Lake Tekapo, but its landscape is not less beautiful as Lake Tekapo.
For less than 2 hours walk, the snowy beautiful mountain was just right in front of me. Absolutely amazing.
My only regret was I should have spent another day here.

The only tour of its kind in New Zealand, and one of three in the world! Very few glaciers terminate into lakes and even fewer of these are accessible to the average person. By using a boat Glacier Explorers get close to towering ice-cliffs and huge floating icebergs.
