The Wine Down - A Taste of Santa Barbara Wine Country with Brandon Sparks-Gillis of Dragonette Cellars
Having learned about wine while working as a clerk at Wally's Wine and Spirits, Brandon Sparks-Gillis took his taster's apprenticeship to co-found Dragonette Cellars with John and Steve Dragonette. Years of cultivation and experience helped them create a truly outstanding label that Brandon shares with the Wine Down.
We discuss growing in the central coast, working with luminary winemakers, and taste several excellent bottles from Dragonette.
GUEST BIO:
John and Steve Dragonette and close friend Brandon Sparks-Gillis formed Dragonette Cellars in order to pursue a long-held dream to produce wines of the utmost quality and purity from the finest vineyards in Santa Barbara County and the Central Coast. Every bottle that leaves our winery is 100% produced by family members.
We have poured our experience into producing cool-climate expressions of Pinot Noir and Syrah from vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley, Sta. Rita Hills, and York Mountain, and Sauvignon Blanc from the uniquely suitable area of Happy Canyon.

Raj Parr talks to Roberson Wine about Domaine de la Côte
Domaine de la Côte is a project in the Santa Rita Hills, born out of the Evening Land Vineyards. When Evening Land decided to back out of Southern California, they sold the vineyards to Sashi Mooman, its winemaker in Santa Rita, plus Sandhi's Rajat Parr and a number of investors. A collection of 6 vineyards planted over 40 acres, their aim is to produce a Pinot Noir with distinct expression of terroir.
The Domaine farms its vineyards organically and makes its wines with the philosophy of 'add nothing; take nothing away.' All the wines are produced and bottled at the winery in the town of Lompoc in Santa Barbara County, three miles from the Domaine.
Their wines are helping to redefine how people think about Californian Pinot Noir.
Roberson Wine is the UK importer for Domaine de la Côte, as well as Sashi and Raj's other label, Sandhi Wines. They also represent Sashi's solo brand, Piedrasassi.
Wes Hagen's 5 minute Master Class on Veraison in Pinot Noir, 7.8.13
Wes Hagen, Vineyard manager and Winemaker for Clos Pepe Vineyards and Estate Wines in the Sta. Rita Hills of Sta. Barbara County, takes you into the vineyard to discuss the onset of color change in pinot noir, known in French as 'veraison'. W
What is veraison, what does it signify, and how close to harvest are we?
Put on your wine geek hat and join us in the field for a lively discussion about vines, birds, color and a waxy substance called bloom!
