Taupo and surroundings. New Zealand
Taupo is a town on the shore of Lake Taupo in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. It is the seat of the Taupo District Council and lies in the southern Waikato Region. The name Taupo comes from Māori Taupō-nui-a-Tia. Literally translated, it means The great cloak of Tia where Tia is the name of the discoverer of the lake.
Taupo has a population of 30,000. Taupo was officially constituted as a borough, but from 1989 it has been administered by the Taupo District Council, the district including both Taupo itself and the surrounding hinterland. Despite this, it is occasionally referred to as a city.
Taupo is a tourist centre, particularly in the summer, as it offers panoramic views over the lake and to the volcanic mountains of Tongariro National Park to the south. It offers a number of tourist activities including sky diving, jet boating and paragliding.
Mount Tongariro is a volcanic complex in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 20 kilometres to the southwest of Lake Taupo, and is the northernmost of the three active volcanoes that dominate the landscape of the central North Island.
The volcanic massif, often simply referred to as Tongariro, has a height of 1,978 metres (6,490 ft). It first erupted about 260,000 years ago. The volcano consists of at least 12 cones; Ngauruhoe, while often regarded as a separate mountain, is geologically a vent of Tongariro. It is also the most active, having erupted more than 70 times since 1839, although the last eruption took place in 1974-1975. Activity has also been recorded at other vents. Red Crater last erupted ash in 1926 and contains active fumaroles. There are many explosion craters on the massif; water has filled some of these to form the Blue Lake and the Emerald Lakes.
The popular hiking route called Tongariro Alpine Crossing passes between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe.
Mount Tongariro and its surroundings are also one of the several locations which Peter Jackson chose to shoot the The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
And Taupo has a museum with some Maori artefacts and other local things.

Road Trip from Wellington to Taupo via the Rangitikei River and the Rangipo Desert | North Island
In October 2016, I spent a few days in the Central North Island region of New Zealand.
On day 1, I drove from Wellington to Taupo along State Highway 1 and stopped off at the Rangitikei River and Rangipo Desert to fly my DJI Phantom 4 drone and do some exploring. On the journey I passed through the little towns of Otaki, Hunterville, Mangaweka, Taihape & Waiouru.
If you watch carefully, you'll see the iconic Mangaweka aeroplane, the Waiouru War Museum tanks & artillery and the Taupo Trout statue as I whizz by in my car.
This is part one of a seven part travel series featuring the Central North Island region.
Part 1 - Wellington to Taupo. Rangitikei River & Rangipo Desert.
Part 2 - Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Taupo, Kinloch, Reid's Farm Reserve & Aratiatia Dam
Part 3 - The Huka Falls, Taupo
Part 4 - The Huka Falls River Cruise
Part 5 - The Kaimanawa Wall
Part 6 - Returning home via Rotorua. Lake Rotorua, Rotorua Canopy Tours, Okere Falls, Kerosene Creek and Mount Ruapehu
Part 7 - Ziplining at the Rotorua Canopy Tours
As an avid travel fan I've done many trips overseas trips to explore the world, learn about history & culture, experience adventure and try exotic food. However recently, I've decided to put more effort into exploring my own beautiful country - New Zealand. People come from all over the world to see NZ and rave about how amazing it is. It is time for me to see the beauty that sits right on my doorstep.

The Kaimanawa Wall - Investigating the Mysterious Stone Structure | Taupo | New Zealand
The Kaimanawa Wall. Man-made megalithic structure or volcanic freak of nature?
In October 2016, I spent a few days in the Central North Island region of New Zealand.
On day 3, I went exploring around Taupo, Kinloch, Reid's Farm Recreation Reserve, the Huka Falls, Aratiatia Dam and the Kaimanawa Forest.
There are two prevailing views on the origin of the Kaimanawa Wall: The first, the wall is a naturally formed rock formation with fractures caused by cooling. The second is that the wall is a man-made megalith, perhaps built by ancient inhabitants of New Zealand that pre-date the Maori.
I've been to visit the wall once before ( but I wanted to see it again and examine the gaps between the blocks. Unfortunately, I arrived at the wall in the evening as the sun was setting and it was becoming quite dark in the forest. I didn't have enough time to finish investigating the wall nor have adequate light for filming and photographing. I plan to return again to the wall in February 2017, at an earlier time in the day.
Some speculate that the Kaimanawa Wall is evidence of New Zealand inhabitants that pre-date Maori. You can learn more about these theories by watching the following multipart documentaries on YouTube:

How New Zealand was formed. Auckland museum
How was New Zealand formed? Auckland museum
We saw this interesting video played in the Volcanoes gallery at Auckland Museum, which shows how the huge eruptions dating back over 26 million years created many of the most iconic landscape features in New Zealand such as Lake Taupo, Rangitoto Island and city Auckland.
The information below is from the website
New Zealand is part of a continent called Zealandia, most of which is under the ocean. The country lies across two moving plates – segments of the earth’s crust. As these plates collide, rocks are being pushed up, creating hills and mountains, including the Southern Alps.
About 25 million years ago Zealandia began to split apart. Still mostly under the sea, it now lay at the junction of the Australian and Pacific plates. Close to the plate boundary, part of the sunken continent was pushed up, creating the land area of New Zealand.

A short trip to Taupo, New Zealand
We been to Taupo- a town near the centre of New Zealand's North Island. It is famous for its outdoor sports ranging from fishing to jet-boating. We visited Lake Taupo- the largest lake in New Zealand and Huka Falls- a set of waterfalls on the Waikato River that drains Lake Taupo. The colour of water is really unique- greenish blue colour which is created by speed and pressure. The last one was Craters of the moon- geothermal area which is part of the largest geothermal field in New Zealand. It lies within the Taupo Volcanic Zone. A 45-minute walk traverses the main pathway around this cratered valley. It was just amazing to see the view, great experience we had.
We also went for Jet boating but unfortunately my camera stopped working. I am really disappointed because I have missed amazing shots of Huka falls.
