Mountain Closed Day in Ohakune - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 61: Today we are in the ski and mountain biking mecca of Ohakune, but what do you do when the mountain is closed? We find solace in Vertigo Indoor Climbing Wall!
Yesterday - Day 60 -
Tomorrow – Day 62 –
About this video:
So what do you do when the mountain is closed in Ohakune and it’s too much of a rainy day to go mountain biking? Do some indoor rock climbing in Ohakune!
If you have been following our daily travel vlog where we are doing 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand, you will see that we try to do just that! But with the weather ruining all our plans, we are left racking our brains on what to do in Ohakune when the mountain is closed. What can we do in Ohakune on a rainy day? We ponder this over some board games in the hostel, before hitting the toen of Ohakune looking for something to do on a rainy day. We find just the place...
Cheap, fun, challenging and indoors, the SLR Vertigo Climbing Centre is the perfect activity for when the mountain is closed in Ohakune! We check out the clip n’ climb indoor climbing wall with so many different climbing walls to challenge yourself with. The Vertigo Climbing Centre or indoor climbing wall at Ohakune is open until quite late so we really make the most of that time.
After that, we have worked up an appetite which is perfect in the après ski town of Ohakune where there are plenty of bars and eateries. We treat ourselves to a gourmet burger.
So what do you think of the indoor climbing wall in Ohakune? Is it something you would try if the mountain was closed in Ohakune?

waitomo glowworm caves new zealand
The Enchanted Glowworm Caves of Waitomo
Deep underneath the hilly landscapes of North Island, New Zealand is hidden an amazing cave lit with glowworms.
The Waitomo Glow-worm Cave is home to thousands of glow-worms that light up the cave ceiling like a starry night sky. This species of glow-worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, which is found exclusively in New Zealand, emits a blue-green glow that illuminates the underground cave river. Though, the glow-worms aren’t really glow-worms. They’re fly larvae. And what causes the glowing? Excretory organs. These insects produce a silk-like thread used to trap flies and other bugs for them to prey on. And the hungrier they are, the brighter they glow.
The cave system was first extensively explored in 1887 by English surveyor Fred Mace and local Maori Chief Tane Tinorau. However, the local Māori people had known about the caves for quite some time. Tourists started visiting in 1889 when Tinorau and his wife began leading tours. Today, many of cave guides are descendants of Tinorau and his wife.
Location: The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are located in the southern Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand, 12 km northwest of Te Kuiti.
Matts trip to NZ
8 awesome days in NZ, spent around the lower part of the North Island.
We did: Road trip to Te Kuiti (staying overnight) to the Gloworm caves, and cave rafting (no photos though, not allowed) Chateau Tongariro where we stayed overnight (the place was huge!), Coastal walkway, Paritutu Rock climb (overlooking New Plymouth), Mt Taranaki hike, Mangamahoe lake. Also visited Hawera.
So much more video but this one is already long enough! Quality isn't the best because it take so long to upload so had to reduce it.
Entrepreneurial social enterprise Hum Salon and Falling Apple Charitable Trust
Hum Salon is an exciting social enterprise which is focused on the Stakeholder rather than the Shareholder. It holds to the fact that an entrepreneurial business can be more successful by focusing on people above profit. Falling Apple Charitable Trust, an arm of the this entrepreneurial business. Hum Salon and Falling Apple Charitable Trust are restoring the Derelict Heritage Villa at 123 Grafton Road using sponsorship, donations and money from the Hum Hut Coffee Shop and their delicious sustainable organic coffee. This entrepreneurial villa will hold a restaurant, café and deli with local organic food and organic coffee and sustainable fare and will be a music, arts and free-media centre under the name 'Hum'. The business will be brought into fruition with the help of volunteers and those passionate about what Hum is building.
Hum are an entrepreneurial social enterprise; Falling Apple Charitable Trust and Hum Salon. The Hum Salon and Falling Apple Charitable Trust project is for Social Profit, Stakeholders being our priority rather than Shareholders.
Hum have just celebrated the completion of the first stage of external restoration of the beautiful iconic Historic Villa on the corner of Grafton Bridge and Grafton Road. Over 45 New Zealand Business' and Community Volunteers contributed to what has amounted to close to half a million dollars worth of restructuring, repairing and restoration work! We have photographically documented the journey to-date and some of these images are showcased in our front room. Pop in for some sustainable organic coffee and see who has contributed and exactly what needed to be done to the villa to get her to this mile-stone.
In the next stage we want to build back-decks with views out to the cemetery and city, install a sustainable restaurant, cafe, arts, music and educational workshop centre with boutique gardens. What's better than a walk in the organic gardens with your organic coffee. We will once again be drawing on New Zealand Business to contribute and gearing up for some major fundraising to lurch things forward at a good solid speed.
Hum are hoping to document the entire process, moving towards having the house taken off the grid and completely self sustainable; solar paneling, rain-water tanks and wool insulation are a few ideas. We will be gathering people with creative ideas to convene on best practice soon.
If you would like to help with Hum Salon and the Falling Apple Charitable Trust project in any way whether it be through services, words of support or a donation, then stop in and have an organic coffee or please email info@fallingapple.org.nz or info@humsalon.co.nz
Hum Salon, a truly entrepreneurial venture worth supporting.

The Block's Mark Richardson reveals what kind of tool he is
It's an admittedly silly question and yet the answers are quite revealing. If you were a tool, what kind of tool would you be? Well, many people who watch The AM Show would say I'm already a tool, laughs Mark Richardson, The AM Show sports presenter and The Block NZ host. No, I think I'd be one of those hammers – with the slightly rounded hammer part – that cobblers used to use to nail the small tacks through the leather in the soles of footwear, where I just tap, tap, tap, tap, tap away and get the job done. Peter Wolfkamp suspects that he himself might be a ruler. READ MORE: *The Block NZ: What's happening out the back? *Want to be on The Block NZ? Think before you make that leap *Block NZ: The 2019 teams who will tackle the fire station renovation It's that eye to detail. It either is or it isn't and that's the beauty of a measurement. Just out of curiosity, what did Mark say? asks The Block NZ's site foreman. Oh brilliant, oh wonderful, he says when he hears his co-star's self-appraisal. Together, this pair have been with The Block NZ since it began eight years ago. They're the original fixtures and fittings, if you will, and they're not planning on renovating anytime soon. I don't know that anyone could have imagined how popular The Block as a series would have been, says Wolfkamp, but it has proved to be so and I think long may it continue. Despite its success, Richardson says he was sceptical when the idea of the show was first pitched to him. I was thinking 'Small New Zealand market, it's expensive to make, maybe give us three years.' But no, it's just been a roaring success and keeps going from strength to strength. And this year's series promises to be the most ambitious yet. It's certainly offering up something that viewers haven't seen before – apartments in a truly central location. There are four teams and five apartments in the old Kingsland firehouse but Richardson is keeping details of that fifth property firmly under his hard hat. I can't really tell you what our plans are but this apartment will lend itself to creating some good drama and some good challenge, that's all I can say on that. Given the site's proximity to Auckland's city centre and Eden Park, this year's teams shouldn't have a problem seeing a return on their sweat equity – if they play their cards right and follow the advice of their host and foreman. History has shown, especially over the last few years, says Richardson, that certain teams would have actually won had they not overspent. He says this year's teams are a good fun bunch. They're interesting people but they're people that you're quite comfortable trying to get to know and, let's face it, they're in our living rooms four days a week ... If people are too out-there and too bizarre it could be a little bit of a turn off. Wolfkamp agrees that the teams have been really good this year. Look, they always are. We might butt heads on any number of issues whether it's around buildi
