Te Waikoropupū Springs
NIWA freshwater scientists have recently finished a three month project for the Tasman District Council monitoring the ultra-clear water of the Te Waikoropupū Springs, near Takaka.
This has confirmed the visual clarity is, at times, just short of the theoretical maximum for pure water.
Swimming is banned in the springs but this Go-Pro video, shot during the monitoring project, gives you a rare chance to get underwater and see what “good viz” is really like.

-- About this video --
Today we are leaving Nelson city but not without a stop at Tahunanui Beach just on the way out of Nelson. Then we have a long drive to Golden Bay over Takaka Hill!
The drive is tough but stunning as we go over karst open landscape that Takaka Hill is famous for. We arrive in Golden Bay and head straight to our first activity in the area: Te Waikoropupu Springs or Pupu Springs.
The entrance is guarded by Maori carvings to show the Maori significance of the area. We enter the Te Waikoropupu Springs walk with respect and make our way to Pupu Springs in Golden Bay.
We are met with the sight of the most stunningly clear water we have ever seen with a super blue colour. Te Waikoropupu Springs is a natural wonder not to be missed in New Zealand.
So what do you think of Te Waikoropupu Springs? Would you visit Pupu Springs in Golden Bay?

Te Waikoropupū Springs (Pupu Springs) | New Zealand | Crystal clear waters
Also known as Pupu Springs, located in South Island of New Zealand near a town called Takaka in Nelson.
Pupu Springs Springs are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand
Springs are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, the largest cold water springs in the Southern Hemisphere and contain some of the clearest water ever measured.
Early European settlers arrived in the Golden Bay area in the 1830s, mainly to build ships and mine for gold, coal and lime. Originally the area around Te Waikoropupū Springs was covered in lowland forest. Gold miners cleared the forest to build water races for sluicing alluvial gold and a mining company worked the area until about 1910.

Te Waikoropupu Springs
This was my trip to South Island on 7th Feb 2018 with my friend Dawn Zhao. We were attracted to this crystal clear water and the beautiful birds' singing. What a wonderful place to visit.
