(The Castle Town of Matsue: A Culture of Tea and Wagashi)
Matsue is a castle town with over 400 years of history, with a long
tradition of tea and wagashi (Japanese confectioneries). Today, it is one of the most famous producers of wagashi in Japan, and tea remains a way of life and hospitality. The Grand Tea Ceremony, one of the three largest tea festivals in Japan, is held at Matsue Castle every October, and there are famous tea houses open year round, such as Meimei-an. In addition to
thriving wagashi brands that both continue to produce sweets from the Edo period and innovate with new flavors and shapes, there are also classes taught by the masters so you can make your own edible works of art.
There is more information at on how to visit and personally partake of this culture.

Matsue Castle
Construction on Matsue Castle, the symbol of the castle town of Matsue, began in 1607 and took four years to complete. The castle was designed to withstand attack during warfare, and evidence of this can be found throughout the castle compound. Its characteristic simplicity and sturdiness are typical of castles build just after the Battle of Sekigahara (1598). In contrast to Himeji Castle's nickname of White Heron Castle, Matsue Castle is known as the Plover Castle. The view from the Goblin Room on the top floor, unobstructed in all four directions, is spectacular. The staircase is made of paulownia wood, and several iron bands encircle each of the structure?fs pillars. The donjon houses a display of battle weapons and other historical artifacts, including a scale model of Matsue Castle which is said to have been made around the time Matsue Castle itself was built.
Lafcadio Hearn's Memorial Museum
Located in the western part of Shiomi Nawate, the museum features an exhibition of over 1,000 items, including 200 of Lafcadio Hearn's favorite personal effects. The display includes such intriguing items as some of Hearn's handwritten manuscripts; study notes written by Hearn's wife Setsu to help her memorize English words; a custom-made writing desk with long legs for Hearn, who was partially blind in his left eye; lamps, a pen tray; and the trunk Hearn carried with him when he disembarked at Yokohama Port.
Meimei-An Teahouse
This teahouse stands on Mt. Akayama, a low hill to the north of Matsue Castle and behind the Shiomi Nawate area. It was built in 1779 under the directions of the 7th Matsudaira lord, Harusato (Lord Fumai). The honseki (main tea room) is of two tatami mats in size, with the alcove and the hearth set on opposite sides of the small room. The honseki, mizuya (preparation room), and kusarinoma (anteroom) are said to remain in their original form, and have been designated by Shimane Prefecture as important cultural properties. The waiting area on the right of the entrance is decorated with natural stones and sand symbolizing a cleansing bowl. Thanks to its location atop a low hill, the teahouse affords an excellent view of the surrounding area. In particular, from the rest area at the top of the stone stairs it is possible to glimpse Matsue castle from an unusual angle. Traditional tea and sweets are available from the affiliated teahouse, Hyakuso-Tei.
