ALEXANDROVSKY MONASTERY SUZDAL RUSSIA 6-1-2016
Alexandrovsky Monastery (Suzdal)
Music The Eternally begotten and Co Eternal Son
Invincible Lord of Host
The Alexandrovsky Monastery (the Convent of St. Alexander) is situated after Pokrovsky Bridge, on the left, high bank of the Kamenka River, over a ravine. According to a legend, the Convent was founded by Aleksandr (Alexander) Nevsky in 1240. In the old times, the Convent of St. Alexander was known as the Grand Lavra and served as a burial vault for Suzdal princesses.
Nothing has been preserved from that ancient age, apart from two late tombstones in a church; the tombstones bear writings telling that two Suzdal princesses, Mariya and Agrippina, were buried here (in 1362 and 1393, respectively).
During the 1608 to 1610 Polish invasion, the Convent was burned down. In 1695, the Convent's hegumenia (abbess) Domnika made a request to Tsar Peter the Great to construct a new church in the Convent; in the request, she mentioned that the Convent had been founded by Aleksandr Nevsky in 1240.
In 1695, Illarion, the metropolitan of Suzdal, issued a charter for the construction of the new church, which received the name of the Church of Ascension. Funds for the erection of the church were donated by Tsarina Natalya Kirillovna, Peter's mother. The construction of the bell tower falls in the same period.
The church is designed as a high, two-tiered rectangular volume crowned with five spires. From the east side, the rectangular volume is extended with an apse; a heated side-altar is added from the north side and a porch is added from the east. The windows are decorated with carved linings featuring simple columns in the first tier and complex figures in the second tier. Complex figure columns are used also for decorating the high, soaring drums.
The octahedral column of the tented-roofed bell tower is put on a short rectangular volume, with wooden stairs added to it. The bell tower's walls are almost completely left undecorated, which makes it unique among Suzdal's tented-roofed bell towers. The upper part is modestly decorated with carved linings of the arched openings and linings over the roof windows.
In the first half of the 18th century, a short fence was constructed around the convent; the fence was decorated with decorative small towers, stylised as defence towers. It was at the same time that the Holy Gates were constructed (restored in 1947); the Gates featured a two-tiered tower and resembled the Monastery of the Trinity's Holy Gates, which would later be included into the ensemble of the Rizopolozhensky Convent. This resemblance is no coincidence: the fence and the towers of the Convent of St. Alexander were erected under the supervision of Ivan Gryaznov who in the late 17th century was involved in the construction of the Monastery of the Trinity (later destroyed) and the Rizopolozhensky Convent.
In 1764, when the church lands were being secularised, the Convent of St. Alexander was dissolved, with its cathedral being transformed into the town's parish church.
In 2006, the Convent of St. Alexander was handed over back to the Russian Orthodox Church, and in September 2007 the first service was held in the Church of the Ascension.

Russia - Easter cake blessing
T/I 11:05:13
Russians took their traditional cakes to church on Saturday
(18/4) for mass blessing rituals on the eve of Orthodox Easter.
The cakes, or kulichi in Russian, are baked several days
before the festival and consist of a mixture of eggs, butter,
sugar, vanilla, sultanas, cardamom and all sprinkled with nuts
and icing sugar. This is big business and the Moscow church
authority, or patriarchate, has a string of its own bakeries
whipping up the Easter specialities.
Preparations for Easter on what the Russian Orthodox Church
calls Great Saturday were led by Patriarch Alexi II, the head
of the Russian Orthodox Church.

the church is always to reconcile an serve peace. That is our

always heard and if it is necessary the church can be a mediator
today and a conciliatory force in our life.

Moscow. Walking on Garden Ring part 2. [4K]
This walk took place the next day after a record amount of snow fell in Moscow. The city has not seen such heavy rainfall for more than 15 years. Therefore, despite what you saw on the cleaning equipment on the streets, in some places the snow has not yet been removed. In this walk, we will also briefly turn from the Garden Ring to see the Paveletsky railway station, one of the most beautiful railway station buildings in Moscow.
The hike starts from Taganskaya Square, one of the most difficult traffic intersections of the city, here several different directions intersect at once. To get around the square, we need four minutes of video and a small arc on the street next to the Garden Ring.

Kremlin and Red Square, Moscow (UNESCO/NHK)
Inextricably linked to all the most important historical and political events in Russia since the 13th century, the Kremlin (built between the 14th and 17th centuries by outstanding Russian and foreign architects) was the residence of the Great Prince and also a religious centre. At the foot of its ramparts, on Red Square, St Basil's Basilica is one of the most beautiful Russian Orthodox monuments.

Moscow. Walking around the Kremlin Ring [4K]
Kitay Gorod, Bely Gorod and Zaryadye are the oldest districts of Moscow. On their territory are the Kremlin, Red Square, the oldest houses and monasteries. Today we will go around the ring around these areas, which is informally called the Kremlin Ring. This is the smallest circular route around the Kremlin. However, this is one of the most intense walks in the history of the city, since almost every building in it has historical significance. We will pay attention to some of the buildings when walking, however, we highly recommend to personally visit these streets and soak up the spirit of great Moscow!

UKRAINE: REBIRTH OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH
Russian/Nat
The fall of communism in the former Soviet Union has brought, among other things, a new lease of life to the region's religions.
The Ukraine has been one of the many former Soviet republics to benefit, but freedom of worship is still not freedom enough for a group of monks near the Crimean capital, Sevastopol.
In the Ukraine, the death of communism has meant the rebirth of the Orthodox Church.
Worshippers pray in even the most remote corners of the country.
The chanting of monks can once again be heard in the hills outside the Crimean capital, Sevastopol.
Inkermann's monastery was erected in the year 96 A-D in honour of the Apostle Andrew.
It was the first monastery in Europe to be built into a rock face, its position chosen for easy defence and complete isolation.
The monastery was unable to stand the test of time however as first the Tartars and then the communists forced the monks out, as did the advent of railway which brought civilisation to the front door.
The monastery was handed back to the monks in 1992 following the introduction of a religious freedom law.
But, like the church's spiritual centre at Saint Sophia in Istanbul, it has only been given the status of a museum.
While the cathedral is still well preserved and the remains of former monks languish in a carefully designed crypt, their present-day successors spend their days waiting for recognition, eking out an existence in the monastery gardens.
They believe the people hold the key to their future.
SOUNDBITE:
It's not a matter for the authorities to resolve. But it's for public opinion to decide the status of this monastery.
SUPERCAPTION: Archimandrite Augustine, Inkermann's Monastery
The remains of the monastery's original gateway have stood overlooking Sevastopol for over a millennium.
The monks will continue to put their faith in a spiritual reawakening they believe will last well into the next millennium, no matter in which direction modern civilisation decides to travel.
