Australia - Jenolan Caves Part 1
Awesome natural cave formations. What I consider a must see area in Australia.
For Part 2 see this link:
Very peaceful and tranquil. Stay still long enough and the small wild life will surprise you when you least expect it. We had just missed the little Platypus when we got there... all we saw were little air bubbles as it swam away. :)
My favourite site was the River Walk, very relaxing and quiet. Lots of various cave tours and natural formations to see. You can also go spelunking on some of the tighter cave tours or take a leisurely stroll around the area, exploring on your own.
enjoy.
Rob
PS. Thanks to our terrific Aussie friends, Dave Simmons for letting us know about the area and taking us up there ! and Sandi & Tony Whalan for filling us in on the history of the area.
(Tony is related to one of the original explorers who found the Jenolan area. The lan in the last part of the name Whalan is used in the naming of the area: Jeno-lan.)

Part 1 of 2
Part 2 will take a look at inside some of the Caves and rock formations.
We stayed at the Mountain Lodge for a couple nights - but in hindsight we should have spent at least another day there. There is a lot to see and do. Here is the link to the accommodations:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brief History of the area see the following link:
For thousands of years, the Jenolan area has been part of the culture of local indigenous peoples. The area holds significance to the Gundungurra people, who knew it as 'Binomil' or 'Bin-oo-mur'. In approximately 1835-40 the area was recorded for the first time by either James, Charles or Alf Whalan, three brothers who each claimed to have discovered the caves while searching for a bushranger, James McKeown, whom they claimed used the caves as a hide-out.
The caves, then known as the Fish River Caves, came under New South Wales Government control in 1866, becoming only the second area in the world reserved for the purpose of conservation and the following year Jeremiah Wilson was appointed as the first Keeper of the Caves. Wilson not only explored the already known Elder and Lucas Caves but later discovered the Imperial, Left Imperial (now known as Chifley), Jersey and Jubilee Caves.
The caves were open to tourism early, but there was little protection from visitors damaging formations until souveniring was banned in 1872. In 1884 the name Jenolan Caves was adopted. The name Jenolan comes from the Gundungurra word, Genowlan, for a high place shaped like a foot.

Sydney Harbour Bridge Transformed Into World's Best Picnic Spot
For more info visit newsinfusion.com
Sydney, Australia - On a once-in-a-century date, October 10, 2010 (10/10/10), Sydney's iconic Harbour Bridge was transformed into the world's greatest picnic spot! More than seven thousand people enjoyed breakfast with a spectacular harbour view, whilst being suspended 50 metres above the water.
Breakfast on the Bridge is the centrepiece of the annual Crave Sydney International Food Festival, a month long celebration offering extraordinary food experiences in unique Sydney locations, in all corners of Australia's global city and across New South Wales (NSW).
Demonstrating Sydney's support of Australia's 2022 FIFA World Cup bid, a four metre high, giant 'Come Play' football was rolled down the center of the Australian landmark.
Among the excited picnic-goers were members of Australia's national football team, the Qantas Socceroos, who played a friendly international match against Paraguay at the Sydney Football Stadium the night before, and some of the best local and international chefs taking part in the Crave Sydney International Food Festival events.
FFA Chairman Frank Lowy said, It is terrific to see that one of Australia's most iconic landmarks, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, has been transformed into a football pitch to show our nations united support for our bid. I am delighted to see so many football supporters here today to send a strong message around the world - we want to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
A FIFA World Cup in Australia will be fun, relaxed, safe and secure. We want the world's greatest sporting event, the FIFA World Cup, come to our shores. We invite the world to Come Play! in Australia, said Mr Lowy.
Premier of New South Wales Kristina Keneally said, Breakfast on the Bridge is the hero event of the Crave Sydney International Food Festival and highlights our city's passion for food and love for the great outdoors.
The festival is a key part of the NSW events calendar and Breakfast on the Bridge is an amazing event experience - where ...

STORYLINE
WILLS GOES PROPERTY HUNTING DOWN UNDER
Prince William has been thanking the people of Sydney for a warm welcome to the city - claiming he might even buy a house there.
He spent part of the day on a shooting range with Australian Paratroopers.
It''s not clear who Prince William had in his sights, but he hit his target again and again. His military training was apparent as he joined the soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian regiment for a live firing exercise.
He scored 103 mm which is well and truly a pass mark in the infantry and the Paras. We can get anything under 150, so he shot pretty well, said Instructor Corporal Kyle Balfoort.
Later on in the day Wills got down with the kids at a centre for disadvantaged teens.
Mine is very varied, laughed Wills when asked what type of music he likes. I like a bit of rock, bit of Linkin Park. I like Kanye West as well. I can''t do any beat boxing so I''m not so good at that.
Accompanying him was the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. It was only a couple of days ago that the avowed Republican finally agreed to meet William.
Critics have suggested the day was a good photo opportunity.
And they don''t get much better than this. In front of the Opera House and Sydney Bridge a barbeque was held in William''s honor.
Speaking to the amassed crowd William quipped that he''d had such a good time he was thinking over moving down under.
I have had the most warm welcome ever. Not just with the weather, but with all Sydney people. Thank you so, so much. It''s been a terrific couple of days in sydney and because of that I''ve joked that I will actually try to buy a house in Sydney, so if any of you have got any properties for sale then please let me know, he said.
And with that the prince jetted off for some free time on the water and a chance to escape the media frenzy that has followed his every move on this tour.
