Chiang Mai - One of Thailand's favorite destinations
Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand. Whilst it is a major growing city, it has managed to retain a relaxed ambiance reminiscent of it's early tourism days as a popular back backing destination. Founded in 1296, it was capital of the independent Lanna Kingdom until 1558. Its Old City area still retains vestiges of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious center.

Chiang Mai, Thailand trip 2016
Chiang Mai sometimes written as Chiengmai or Chiangmai, is the largest and most culturally significant city in Northern Thailand.
It is the capital of Chiang Mai Province and was a former capital of the Kingdom of Lan Na (1296–1768), which became a tributary state of the Kingdom of Chiang Mai from 1774 to 1939. It is 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok and is situated amongst the highest mountains in the country. The city sits astride the Ping River, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River.
Chiang Mai means new city and was so named because it became the new capital of the Lan Na kingdom when it was founded in 1296, succeeding Chiang Rai, the former capital founded in 1262.
All shot was taken with a Gopro Hero 4 silver.

Chiang Mai is a Ghost Town | Thai Visa Crackdown?
It's September of 2019 and Chiang Mai has become a ghost town.
Thailand is quite around this time of year because of the rainy season but this year it is the quietest I have ever seen it.
People have been speculating that it is due to the visa crackdown that the Thai government has embarked on.
Others say, that it is due to the strong baht, the weak pound and tourists getting less value for their money.
Retires are now looking for alternatives to Thailand thanks to the mandatory health insurance that is required when obtaining a retirement visa.
Despite the increasing difficulties that foreigners are facing in Thailand. I still think that Chiang Mai is one of the best places to be.
You can still get long term visas if you want to stay for an extended period of time.
Will things change?
Only time will tell.

9 DAY ROAD TRIP IN THE NORTH THAILAND
JONNYS LIVING IN THAILAND VLOGS
Northern Thailand is geographically characterised by several mountain ranges, which continue from the Shan Hills in bordering Myanmar to Laos, and the river valleys which cut through them. Though like most of Thailand, it has a tropical savanna climate, its relatively high elevation and latitude contribute to more pronounced seasonal temperature variation, with cooler winters than the other regions. Historically it is related to the Lanna Kingdom and its culture.

Experience Thailand: Chiang Mai
Have you heard of Chiang Mai? This beautiful city in the mountainous parts of northern Thailand was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. While the empire is no longer around, Chiang Mai continues to reign as a destination for travel in Thailand.
Visitors from all over the world have made their way to this gem in Thailand’s north for lavish temples, bazaars, locally made arts and crafts and elephant sanctuaries.
While the possibility of discovering old traditions, historic architecture and ancient culture is part of Chiang Mai’s allure, this 700-year old city established by King Mengrei in the 13th-century is also filled with more modern attractions too. An exciting metropolis has developed around the Old City.
Foodies will love Chiang Mai’s blossoming culinary scene, and design lovers will find unique creations and art being showcased in spaces that are every bit of the 21st-century. In December of 2017, UNESCO awarded this Chiang Mai the title of Creative City.
During the day you can spend your time taking in the Chiang Mai’s past, present and future by observing a mixture between the intricate art that adorns the beautiful old temples and exploring the contemporary art and design scene.
Once the sun goes down the city comes to life with night markets, buzzing bars, hip restaurants and hubs for street-food. A little bit outside the old city walls and bustling cosmopolitan area, you can explore idyllic villages and peaceful countryside, beautiful waterfalls and other beautiful scenery.
It’s time to start planning your escape to Chiang Mai, a land in the north where Thailand’s past, present and future come together and create an experience like no other!

Thai Elephant Kingdom - Chiang Mai, Thailand // short elephant ride // escorted tour (May 28, 2016)
Various members of our escorted group are seen here riding the elephants while visiting the Thai Elephant Kingdom outside Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand (on May 28, 2016).
This was by far the highlight of our otherwise somehow boring and rushed escorted tour in Thailand!
Lovely day, gracious hosts and amazing animals - had a blast day at this green location where we spent about half day!
Our amazing experience started with the opportunity to see (and participate) in bathing the big and small elephants... did get WET too, so good times!
Then we learned about the elephants from the knowledgeable local guide...
Finally, after an helpful demo, we were invited to get on the elephant of our choice and ride for about 3 minutes (a photo was taking by the staff and was available for purchase at the end of the tour for 200 BATH or about USD $6.00, framed with a special paper -- made from elephant poop!).
After feeding the elephants, some of us took the OPTIONAL elephant trekking route for merely 25 min, paying 1000 BATH per elephant (almost USD $30.00). Ours was rather a really, really bumpy ride (and the mahout pretty indifferent) and did not feel as enjoyable as this FREE ride that lasted only few minutes but was so smooth and a lot more fun!!!
Others, however, had more pleasant mahouts and an enjoyable trekking experience.

Day 8 of my tour of Thailand by motorbike. I drive over the most amazing mountains I've ever crossed between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The fog is thick, it's freezing cold, I'm wet as hell from being once again assaulted by Thailand's torrential rain. But I'm loving it.
I find a village on top of the highest mountain peak and investigate. I then soldier on down the other side towards Chiang Rai.
In Chiang Rai I visit the city's number one tourist attraction; the classic White Temple and talk to some local Thais around town. This former capital of the Kingdom of Lanna is a relatively small city but proved rather lively 7 days a week.
