Places to see in ( Kingsand - UK )
Places to see in ( Kingsand - UK )
Kingsand and Cawsand are twin villages in southeast Cornwall, United Kingdom. The villages are situated on the Rame Peninsula and in the parish of Maker-with-Rame. Until boundary changes in 1844 Kingsand was in Devon; Cawsand, however, was always in Cornwall. On the old county boundary between the two villages there is still a house called Devon Corn, which has the marker on the front of the house. The villages are popular with tourists but retain their traditional character.
The villages are well known for their smuggling and fishing past. Although the known smuggling tunnels have been sealed up, there are still old fish cellars and boat stores to be seen along the coast.
One notable former resident was John Pollard RN. He was a midshipman (later a Commander) in the Navy who served under Nelson and is the man credited with being Nelson's avenger, since it was he who shot the French sailor who killed the Admiral. Nelson himself has also been said to have visited the village and dined at The Ship Inn (now closed). Other notable residents have included Tabitha Ransome (Arthur Ransome's daughter) and also Ann Davison who was to become the first woman to sail the Atlantic single handed in 1953 and departing from Mashfords boatyard.
Kingsand lies on the shores of Cawsand Bay, with the South West Coast Path running through the village. The village coast, as well as the coast 1 km to the east forms the Kingsand to Sandway Point SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), which shows examples of extensive early Permian volcanicity. The South West Coast Path passes through Kingsand.
Kingsand is connected via the Rame bus link to Plymouth. The Rame bus link runs between Cremyll and goes to Plymouth via Torpoint. In Summer, the Cawsand Ferry runs a passenger service between Cawsand Beach and the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth for visitors to the Barbican. Walkers can reach the village by walking through Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.
A key feature of the villages is the Clocktower along the seafront of Kingsand. It was erected to commemorate the coronation of King George V and the building it is attached to (locally referred to as the Institute) is used as a community hall. The Institute also contains a large cross-stitch tapestry picture of the two villages which was made by residents to commemorate the golden jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
There are three main beaches in the villages, which are separated by areas of rocks with interesting rockpools. Kingsand Beach is a mixture of sand and shingle which is located along The Cleave. Girt Beach is mainly shingle, but with some sand and can be found along Market Street. Cawsand Beach is mainly sand and is found along The Bound. A swimming beach known as Sandways lies a short walk out of the village across the rocks towards Fort Picklecombe.

History & Haunting of : Cadgwith Cove ,Cadgwith,Cornwall ,U.K
The 300 year old Cadgwith Cove Inn is right on the coastal path and in the centre of the village of Cadgwith. For centuries it has been the meeting place of fishermen .
The inn is reputedly home to a phantom old fisherman and a ghostly smuggler. A witness outside the front of the inn, smoking a cigarette after the bar had closed, heard a set of disembodied footsteps pass by and around the pub...
Folk Night at Cadgwith Cove Inn
Just up the road from the inn is a holiday home named The Corner House it is said that here in 1988 it was reported that this dark monk like figure was seen to rise and float along a corridor near the bathroom...
Corner House, as featured in English Cottage Interiors by Hugh Lander, is a delightful traditional fisherman`s cottage. It is full of character with a lovely old polished Cornish range at one end of the 22 ft living room. Situated only 100 yards from the sea, the cottage stands at the beginning of one of the cliff walks, which runs to an old mill and then on to Kennack Sands. A visitor once wrote the house wrapped its arms around us immediately and gave us a big hug. We loved it!!
The village has its origins in medieval times as a collection of fish cellars in a sheltered south-east facing coastal valley with a shingle cove. Fishing subsidised local farmers' livelihoods. Cadgwith was originally called 'Porthcaswydh', becoming 'Por Cadjwydh' in Late Cornish, and is derived from the Cornish word for 'a thicket', literally meaning battle of trees, probably because the valley was densely wooded. From the 16th century, the village became inhabited, with fishing as the main occupation. Subsequently, houses, lofts, capstan houses, and cellars constructed of local stone or cob walls and thatched or slated roofs were built along the beach and up the sides of the valley leading to Cadgwith's characteristic Cornish fishing village appearance. In recent times a very small Anglican church was built, next to the path from the car park down to the seafront, dedicated to St Mary. The Lizard Peninsula has a treacherous coastline due to a combination of submerged rocks and weather factors (gales, storms, or fog). There are numerous wrecks on the rocks off Lizard Point known as The Stags, and The Manacles which lie near Coverack, and there are a number of other rocks off the coast of Cadgwith known as The Craggan and The Boa. Deep sea diving onto the wrecks is quite popular.

The stepping stones of the South West Coast Path across Gillan Creek are submerged roughly 3 hours either side of high water. Without using the ferry, walkers are forced inland along roads for over a mile, and miss a large stretch of the south bank of the creek.

Those who take the ferry across to Helford Passage can explore the beautiful gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan. Both are full of sub-tropical plants, tree ferns, rhododendrons and much more. These gardens continue to flourish due to both the mild climate and warming effect of the sea.

Places to see in ( Pendeen - UK )
Places to see in ( Pendeen - UK )
Pendeen is a village and ecclesiastical parish on the Penwith peninsula in Cornwall, United Kingdom. It is 3 miles north-northeast of St Just and 7 mi west of Penzance. It lies along the B3306 road which connects St Ives to Land's End and the A30 road.
The village has a community centre, a shop, a post office, a primary school, and a few small businesses. Community activities include an art club, a gardening club, silver marching band and a football club. Nearby settlements include Carnyorth and Trewellard and the historic Geevor Tin Mine is immediately north of the village. The village gets its name from the headland on which Pendeen Lighthouse stands, a mile from the village. Like many other Cornish villages near the coast, Pendeen had a reputation for smuggling activities.
Pendeen is overlooked by a hill, Carn Eanes, referred to locally as 'The Carn', the site of a quarry which provided the granite to build Pendeen church. Pendeen lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park.
Pendeen is close (1 km) to the South West Coast Path and in addition has a number of local footpaths for exploring the surroundings. The area now known as the Parochial Parish of Pendeen, was originally referred to as North St Just and was formed in 1846. It included a number of settlements in the eastern part of the Parochial Parish of St Just.[1] Today the Parochial Parish of Pendeen comprises the settlements of Bojewyan, Portheras Cross, Boscaswell Downs, Lower Boscaswell, Trewellard, Carnyorth and part of Botallack. This area remains part of the civil parish of St Just. Before the splitting of the Parish in 1846 Pendeen would have referred to the eponymous headland or Pendeen Manor, birthplace of the Reverend William Borlase, rather than any of the settlements listed above.
The Church of St John is built of granite: it was designed by the parson (Robert Aitken), built by the villagers in 1851 and refurbished in 1878. At Pendeen Manor Farm is a 16th-century farmhouse (front added in 1670) and a fogou or vau 56 ft (17 m) long, with a side passage of 24 ft (7.3 m). There is a Cornish cross in the vicarage garden.
Pendeen was the subject of the book 'Life in a Cornish Village' by the Rev. F. J. Horsefield in 1893. Horsefield, being an amateur historian, wrote of a multitude of aspects of Pendeen's past. Horsefield also writes of a large natural cave named Pendeen Vau, the entrance of which is to be found on a cliff. Apparently this cave is vast, going far below and into the sea, but its existence is disputed by many villagers.
