A VISIT TO FREMANTLE WESTERN AUSTRALIA NOV 2006
WITH BRANT AND DON WEBER Fremantle (32°03′15″S, 115°44′53″E) is a city located within the Perth metropolitan area on Australia's western coast, at the mouth of the Swan River, 19 kilometres southwest of Perth's Central Business District. It was established by British settlers as part of the Swan River Colony in 1829. It was declared a city in 1929, and has a population of approximately 25,000. Fremantle has convict-built colonial era buildings, the old jetty and port, the maritime museum, and many other historical buildings. The Round HouseOne of these is the Round House, the oldest remaining building in Western Australia, built as a gaol in 1830 - 1831. The convicts built a new gaol which was completed in the 1850s and continued to be used as Fremantle's prison through until 1991. Fremantle Prison was once one of the most notorious prisons in the British Empire. It housed British convicts, local prisoners, military prisoners, enemy aliens and prisoners of war. The Round House is located in what is now known as Fremantle's West End: a collection of streets containing colonial buildings at the tip of the southern end of the port, which is vaguely reminiscent of Stockholm. A process of gentrification in the early 1990s was accelerated by the establishment of the University of Notre Dame Australia, which has restored and occupies many of the buildings in the West End. The majestic Fremantle History Museum is another building constructed in the 1860s by convicts from indigenous limestone: it is a former asylum building on Ord Street and is one of Fremantle's most significant landmarks. This building was the land base of the Us Navy during WWII. It now also houses the Fremantle Arts Centre and the Immigration Museum which aims to preserve the history and stories of all immigrants who arrived in Western Australia. The Fremantle Markets are a tourist attraction, located in the centre of Fremantle on its Cappuccino Strip (so named because of the abundance of restaurants and cafes). The Premier of Western Australia, Sir John Forrest, laid the foundation stone for the markets on Saturday 6 November 1897. Over 150 stalls are housed in its old Victorian-era building, which was listed by the National Trust and Heritage Council in 1980.
AlbanyRegionDVD4 MtBarker
Mt Barker is situated in the centre of the original Plantagenet district, which stretched from the Southern coast between Two Peoples Bay and Cape Edward, to the west of Wilsons Inlet and, northwards as far as Lake Katherine near Tenterden.
How the Plantagenet name was given has been a mesmerising mystery. Perhaps this presentation should have been called The Plantagenet Region.
Some say the wildflower species of broom plant said to be growing in the area, others say Captain Stirling was continuing Captain Vancouvers decision to honour the Royal Family, which claimed to be of Plantagenet blood.
Mt Barker was popularly known for Apples between 1910 and 1960, today it is largely known for its wines.
The Old Bush Inn was established in 1860 by early settler William C Cooper.
Main couriers changed horses here and it was a welcome resting place between Albany and Kojonup. Business was affected by the opening of the railway in 1899, and the inn was delicenced after the Plantagenet Hotel was opened in 1914.
Notable buildings in the town centre include All Saints Church built in 1900, and the
Plantagenet Hotel which is a prominent main street landmark.
The old Police Station Museum, built in 1867-68 by a convict road party it originally consisted of living quarters, coach house and stables for the police horses.
Interestingly they forgot to build a lockup which meant that prisoners had to be tied to the kitchen table or to a log outside.
Saint Werburgh's Church. In 1872 Egerton-Warburton's eldest brother, who was the Squire of Arley Hall and the rector of Northwich, sent £500 for the building of the church on the property. The result was a church of great vernacular originality.
The ironwork was made on the family forge, the walls were made of a mixture of gravel, straw and clay, the font had been used for grinding flour and the roof was designed by Egerton-Warburton who also did all the plastering.
The church is located on St Werburgh's Road, on a hill above the Hay River.
Below the church are the remains of the Hay River Bridge (now no more than a few old pit sawn timbers) which was built in 1858 and used continuously until 1968.
The Albany Region has over 50 wineries and these produce some of the finest wines in Australia. Many of the red and white varieties have achieved international recognition.

Exploring abandoned Jail!
The Kansas City work house was Kansas city's original jail . Built with inmate labor between the late 1800's-early 1900's it housed some of the worst offenders of the time . There are still solitary cells to be seen in the basement as well as some very nice architecture. The building was constructed from natively quarried lime stone.
