The Ancient Galilee Boat (Jesus Boat) at the Yigal Allon Centre
The Yigal Allon Centre contains the Ancient Galilee Boat, referred to as the Jesus Boat. It was discovered near the shore of the Sea of Galilee by two brothers who lived at the Kibbutz Nof Ginosar, the grounds that the Centre/Museum is on. It took many years in the process of protecting the boat, raising it from the water and preserving it, before it could be exposed to the air and finally shown in its present state to the public.

The Ancient Galilee Boat, also known as the Jesus Boat, is an ancient fishing boat from the 1st century AD, discovered in 1986 on the north-west shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. The remains of the boat, 27 feet (8.27 meters) long, 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) wide and with a maximum preserved height of 4.3 feet (1.3 meters), first appeared during a drought, when the waters of the Sea (actually a great fresh-water lake) receded.

Galilee Boat at Genesar (Ginosar)
Galilee Boat at Genesar (Ginosar). Randall Niles visits the restored first century find known as the Jesus Boat on the Sea of Galilee in Israel.
The Galilee Boat (also known as the Jesus Boat) was discovered by local Galilean residents in January 1986. During a major drought at the Sea of Galilee, two brothers noticed a distinct oval shape in the recently-revealed mud. Representatives of the Israel Department of Antiquities, who were also noting the emergence of previously unknown harbors along the drought-stricken shoreline, checked it out and confirmed that it was the remains of an ancient fishing vessel.
What happened next was remarkable. Working around the clock, the Galilee Boat was exhumed from the mud over an eleven-day-period in a painstaking process that preserved the fragile remains. The boat was wrapped in a polyurethane shell and then immersed in a special tank of water to avoid quick disintegration. Finally, over a period of years, the rotten wood was replaced with a special wax underwater. Ultimately, through a process of gradually raising the water temperature over a period many months, the wax-filled shell was removed from the tank and placed on display. To date, multiple studies have placed the ancient vessel at 100 BC to 100 AD. The structure and features of the Galilee Boat are consistent with the fishing boats mentioned throughout the Gospel accounts of the New Testament.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Discovery Of The Ancient Galilee Boat AKA Jesus Boat
The Ancient 2,000 year old Galilee boat discovery in 1986 on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee was buried in mud.
The Galilee boat is 8.2 m long and has a maximum breadth of 2.3 m. most of the planks are of cedar, about 3 cm thick.
The keel and planking had been edge-joined in the classical fashion, using mortise and tenon joints locked on place with
tapered hardwood pegs.
The conservation of our ancient boat was a challenging undertaking: the treatment of waterlogged wood endeavored to transform soft, spongy and crumbling material into a stable object, retaining its original shape and fit to be exhibited in a dry museum environment.

The Galilee Boat
The Galilee Boat is a first century fishing vessel discovered on the shoreline of Genesar, a few miles south of Capernaum. This artifact, also known as the “Jesus Boat,” puts the Gospel accounts on the Sea of Galilee into better context.
During a major drought here at the Sea of Galilee, two brothers noticed a large oval shape in the muddy shoreline. Representatives of Israel’s Department of Antiquities checked it out and confirmed that it was the remains of an ancient fishing vessel.
What happened next was remarkable. Working around the clock, the Galilee Boat was exhumed from the mud over an eleven-day-period in a painstaking process that preserved the fragile remains. The boat was wrapped in a polyurethane shell and then immersed in a special tank of water. Over a period of years, the rotten wood was replaced with a special wax, underwater. Ultimately, through a process of gradually raising the water temperature over a period of many months, the wax-filled shell was removed from the tank and placed on display at the Galilee Boat Museum in Genesar.
Multiple studies have dated the Galilee Boat – or “Jesus Boat” -- in the range of 100 BC to 100 AD. The structure and features of the Galilee Boat are consistent with the fishing boats mentioned throughout the Gospel accounts and depicted in ancient artwork of the period. A famous first-century mosaic corroborates the first-century design of the Galilee Boat, including the four oars, a rudder, and a small mast. A crew of six or more was common.

Riding the boats to the Jesus Boat Museum in Kibbutz Ginosar from Tiberias, Israel. It was March 2009, cool to warm and beautiful. They fly the flags of the tour groups so we seen about 8 different countiries flags on the open sea. It's also called Lake Kinneret and it's more a Lake than an in-land sea. Nice boat ride and the tour bus meets you on the other side and from there, one can visit The Church of The Multiplication, Mount of The Beatitudes, Capernaum and Church of The Primacy of St. Peter. It's The Golan Heights and it's lush and resembles California.
