BUNDABERG QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA: HOME OF BUNDABERG RUM
AA+ Bundy Rum Distillery runs regular tours. It shows the whole manufacturing process but the most impressive part is the mollases storage shed. It's huge - over 5 metres deep and holds up to 100,000 litres of mollases. The bottle & packing room has an automatic pallette machine. At the bar I enjoyed 2 free drinks. I was happy after that tour.
There is also the Bundberg Barrel where they make Bundaberg Ginger Beer. You see how ginger beer is made and then got to sample all the different drinks. There was normal ginger beer, horehound,
burgundee, sarsparilla, lemon lime & bitters, cola, peachee, and a couple of diet drinks as well (ginger, sarsparilla and LL&b). The diet Ginger beer has 50% more ginger in it and mixes well.

Bundaberg
Bundaberg is a city in Queensland, Australia. It is part of the local government area of the Bundaberg Region and is a major centre within Queensland's broader Wide Bay-Burnett geographical region. The city is on the Burnett River, approximately 385 kilometres north of the state capital, Brisbane, and 15 kilometres inland from the coast. The local Aboriginal group is the Kalki people.
The first Europeans in the area were timbergetters and co-founders of Bundaberg, John and Gavin Steuart who arrived in 1867. The town was surveyed in 1870. By 1881 it was gazetted as a municipality (the Borough of Bundaberg). It grew rapidly into a town by 1902 and a city by 1913.
Ginger beer - Bundaberg
Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Pty Ltd is a very large brewer of non-alcoholic beverages (soft drink) located in Bundaberg, Queensland. The business is owned by an Australian family. Since 2006, Bundaberg has been exporting its brewed drinks to over 32 countries. The company was established in 1960.
The ‘Bundaberg Barrel’ was built alongside our brewery as a tourist attraction showing visitors how Australia’s number one ginger beer is made. The popular tourist facility includes interactive displays and educational material highlighting the unique brewing process that creates the distinct flavour of our most popular drink.
Brewing process
Bundaberg's brewing process typically consists of 5 stages. The following process is an example of how Bundaberg's Ginger Beer is brewed.
Stage 1. Grinding the Ginger
Bundaberg Ginger Beer is made using dried ginger root. The ginger comes from the local Queensland area and is dried using a special process that ensures the natural flavour is preserved. The dried ginger root is ground into a coarse flour.
Stage 2. Making the Ginger Wort
The ground ginger is mixed with Queensland Cane Sugar and water. The mixture is heated to release flavours, sugars and starches from the ginger. The ginger starches are also broken down into fermentable sugars.
Stage 3. Fermenting with yeast
Yeast is added to ferment the wort. A special yeast is used in the natural brewing process which extracts ginger flavor and distinctive taste.
Stage 4. Maturating the Ginger Beer
After fermentation, the ginger is filtered to an exacting degree to leave behind the smaller, flavorsome pieces of ginger that will provide extra flavor during maturation and beyond.
The ginger beer at this stage is a concentrate or strong ginger beer. It is stored this way to maximize maturation.
Stage 5. Making it ready to Drink
After maturation, the ginger beer is diluted with water, sugar and citric acid to drinking strength and filtered. It is then sent to the filler where it is carbonated and put into bottles.
