London Planes, Trains & Tube Stock, Sunday 17th March 2013
Another day of travelling, and myself and John decided to head back to our favourite place, and that of course is London. We travelled down on Megabus from Cheltenham, the most bizarre journey! On arriving into Swindon it was gently fluttering with snow, but by the time we hit the M4,it had obviously threw it down and still was. We had driven into the most bizarre snow storm! 20 minutes later, it was like it had not happened and was completely clear. Strange!
However, that didn't deter us from enjoying the day, if a little cloudy and wet at times.
First port of call was Stratford Regional. We boarded a DLR service for the short hop to Stratford International, part of the new extension that was built for the Olympics.
We got ourselves a platform ticket and headed down to catch whatever we could.
For such a big and modern and new station, one can't help but think that it should be used A LOT MORE than what it actually is. With 2 lines on the London bound side not even being used, surely more trains could run via here and call here. Maybe one day, who knows.
Currently it is served by South Eastern High Speed Javelin services between London St Pancras, Ebbsfleet International, Ashford International and Faversham.
We see a few of those services call on their respective duties during our short hour's stay. We also see the awesome Eurostar's powering through the station heading out and back from the continent.
After leaving here, we hopped back on the DLR and decided to head down to Royal Albert station on the Beckton branch. Why here? London City Airport!
As you come out of the station , the River Thames is directly in front of you and also the runway and apron, and the view from here is simply incredible! Sadly the rain had decided to fall at this point but that didnt stop us enjoying 45 minutes watching some of the aircraft taking off and landing, as well as seeing the views of the airport's operations in full swing.
Then later on , after heading to Paddington for a meal at our favourtite on-station pub The Mad Bishop & Bear, we caught a Hammersmith & City line train , formed of an S stock train on this occasion , and headed down the line to London King's Cross.
Again with the weather being severely nasty up in the North West of the UK and Scotland, when we arrived the station shed was virtually empty.
We did see a First Capital Connect 365 depart for Peterborough.
Next was the 17:45 East Coast service to Edinburgh depart on time, before a severely delayed HST set arrived back into London from Newcastle before swiftly departing again 15 minutes later for Harrogate, albeit already being 15 minutes behind its scheduled departure time.
Our next stop was back on the Hammersmith & City line, at Royal Oak, on which from Kings Cross to there we used a C stock train. It will be sad to see them be no more when fully withdrawn. During our hour at Royal Oak, we saw the London Underground services depart for Moorgate (due to a blockade between Aldgate and Barking) and Hammersmith. Also seen in the darkness were various First Great Western HST and Turbo sets departing from and heading back to London Paddington on their various duties. We also see Heathrow Express departing for the airport aswell as one back into Paddington station.
Lastly, whilst waiting at Paddington for our train home, we spent a little while filming at the top of Platform 1 to catch what we could.
We see the 19:33 to Exeter St Davids, powered by power cars 43020 & 43190 depart into the darkness.shortly followed by 43070 & 43079 arriving back at the Great Western terminus from Swansea.
A short while later, 43191 & 43169 arrive on an ECS move from Old Oak Common.
(Please ignore the text in the edit, got it wrong lol) whilst just behind it is another FGW HST set departing Paddington into the cold night's sky.
I hope you enjoy this compilation of the best of London!

WHITSTABLE'S LOST PUBS
The many Public Houses and Hotels in Whitstable once provided a wide range of establishments catering for a varied range of clientele. The Bear and Key Hotel was probably the largest and was used by the more prosperous section of the community. The working men were more likely to spend their evenings in one of the single room 'Beer Houses', often the front room of one of the smaller dwellings, which provided a single barrel of beer and a few chairs.
Over the years the number of Pubs has dwindled, some due to enemy action, to increasing property values and many to the change in social habits.
This video, which is based on the book 'Ales and Tales', records the fate of a few of the once popular establishments.
