Supporting Mindfulness, Chinese
Professor Mark Williams explains how you can support the work of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre in the third of four short videos. This video includes Chinese subtitles.
We live in a world filled with material wealth, live longer and healthier lives, and yet anxiety, stress, unhappiness, and depression have never been more common. What are the driving forces behind these interlinked global epidemics? In this series, Professor Mark Williams (Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at Oxford University) and Dr Danny Penman discuss the recent scientific advances that have radically altered our understanding of depression and related disorders. Also discussed is the latest treatments and therapies that are offering hope to those suffering from depression. Professor Williams co-developed Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), a treatment for anxiety, stress and depression that is at least as effective as drugs at preventing new episodes of depression. It's now one of the preferred treatments for depression recommended by the UK's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. The same technique, based upon an ancient form of meditation, can also help us cope more effectively with the relentless demands of our increasingly frantic world. Professor Williams and Dr Penman co-authored the bestselling book Mindfulness: Finding Peace in a Frantic World.

Many people have no idea what it would be like to live in a Buddhist monastery. Since you may be curious to learn more about the lives of Buddhist monastics, in this program we present an ordinary day at Ling Jiou Mountain.
You may also be wondering about the benefits of meditation practice and whether the monastic life has any relevance for lay people living in the modern world. Master Hsin Tao stresses that spiritual practice is only effective when it becomes part of our daily lives, such that we bring mindfulness and vigilance to whatever activities we engage in; this is what he refers to as “life Chan.” As such, whatever type of formal practice we may engage in, the purpose is to get in touch with our inherent buddha-nature and make it a part of our daily lives—this is the path leading to buddhahood!
Some people are under the impression that living the life of a Buddhist monastic is as easy as ringing a bell. In fact, every aspect of monastic life is highly regulated and full of solemn etiquette and rituals—even ringing the monastery bell has to be performed in the prescribed manner. The key is to bring concentration and mindfulness to everything we do, such that life and practice become a seamless whole.
Now let’s take a look at a day in the life of the monastic community at the Wusheng Monastery nestled on Ling Jiou Mountain in northeastern Taiwan.

Ten years ago, when China's Internet population totaled 22.5 million and Facebook and Twitter had not even been conceived, a group of researchers came together to organize a conference to study the Internet in China. By all indications even then, it was clear that China would have a major impact on the global digital economy. Ten years on, that foresight has been vindicated.
China today has the largest Internet population of any country and it has made its presence felt in the Internet space. In all aspects of the Internet -- online gaming, micro blogging, search engines, ecommerce, content regulation, Internet governance, international domain names -- China is both changing and being changed by the Internet. The annual Chinese Internet Research Conference (CIRC) investigates these phenomena, asking probing questions into what, how, to what extent, and why these changes are taking and have taken place.
This interdisciplinary conference brings together scholars, analysts, industry leaders, journalists and legal practitioners from around the world to examine the impact of the Internet on Chinese societies, its social, cultural, political and economic aspects, as well as how China is changing the Internet.
Hosted by the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism and the USC U.S.-China Institute, the 10th Annual Chinese Internet Research Conference -- CIRC10 -- will be held on May 21-22, 2012, in Los Angeles, the world's entertainment capital. CIRC10 will examine trends and themes as we explore the ways in which the Internet and other technologies interact with Chinese cultural and social life.

We have felt regret and disappointment even from the very beginning when the statement was made. We just felt that clearly the Australian prime minister felt there is no need to amend his position, despite the various comments and observations made by Asian governments, governments in Asia, but again this is entirely for Australia to adopt and of course they will be mindful that this is not exactly the feeling held by many countries in Asia.

STORYLINE:
China has commented on Australian Prime Minister John Howard's strike first policy, saying it has noted the concern of other Asian countries.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said his government firmly supported the fight against terrorism, but also believed that any action should have clear evidence and follow the charter of the United Nations.
China's relationship with Australia, most recently seen with Australia winning a large gas supply contract, remains strong.
The comments by the Australian Prime Minister have drawn criticism across Asia.
Mr Howard said the UN charter and international law should be changed to permit a country to conduct pre-emptive strikes against terrorists in other nations.
Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Marti Natalegawa said his government felt regret and disappointment at the statement, and said Australia did not have the right to launch military strikes in other countries.
He said such pre-emptive strikes would violate the sovereignty of states and countries could not flout international law.
Protesters in Manila staged a lie-in outside the building that houses the Australian embassy in Manila.
The demonstrators chanted anti-Howard slogans, holding placards saying that Australian troops will not be allowed in the Philippines.
The protest was held by members of the leftist group New Patriotic Alliance.
Several terrorist groups, some with suspected links to al-Qaida, operate in the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries.
